2010-2011 Med school applicants and their parents

I am just curious about this: On your interview trail, how many applicants are invited for interview on the same day?

In DS’s experience, it could be as many as 70 people, but it could also be as few as 10 people.

I would guess a medical school typically interviews 600-800 applicants totally.

3 more short updates:

1) Boston claims to have an unprecedented amount of applicants this year and thus only plan to interview a measly 10%. The sheer volume has apparently caused a huge delay in processing/evaluating applications, and the email assures me that I won’t be at a disadvantage if I don’t hear from them for awhile (because interview dates are based on date app is complete, not date it is reviewed, however complex that may be).

2) Mayo reviews their applicants in batches based on dates. And when I say review, I mean it seems like they really thoroughly review them, and wait until after all of one batch is complete (interviews and everything) before starting on the next batch. According to the chick in the office, my 9/10 date puts me “in the first few days” of the batch that’s getting started soon.

3) SLU says (although it’s never reflected on the “MyStatus” part of the app) my file’s complete and under review. My pals with higher stats than me were invited soon after complete file, and last year my friends with mediocre stats had late interviews. This makes me wonder if SLU is like Tufts (in terms of reviewing high stats applicants first).

seems like patience is the name of the game!

sharonohio, congrats!

D. went to her last interview, loved it. As part of interview, they got to sit thru Med. School 2nd year lecture. D. was pleased that she understood material well. The closer she is to graduation, the more she praises and appreciates her UG program, pre-med advisory/committee, basically everything. At the last interview they said specifically that everybody will know yey or ney this coming weekend. She also learned that although she got telephone call for invite, not everybody else were called. This was the only one that called her, others were emails. Well whatever signs, we do not need to play guessing game for long, just couple days. D. said that if she has few (or couple), by no means she will use ranking in decision making. Actually the highest ranked among the places that she got interviewed is the last one on her list now.

mcat2,
One of D’s interviews had only 5 applicants in group, it is very stressful when there are so few. Other place had about 20. Then I stopped asking.

In DS’s last interview, they said that everybody will know the result next spring (sometime in March.) Patience is the name of the game, as kristin said.

At my Vandy interview, I was the only interviewer. Lots of personalized attention that day! It was kind of awkward though, because I forced myself to ask questions during the information sessions when they say “do you have any questions?”

^ Wow, you must be the star on that day. That school must interview a small percentage of applicants.

Fot many schools DS applied to, there is only one interview session in a week (sometimes even once in two weeks.) And the interview season is also shorter than many other school’s. As such, the interview group tends to be large.

I would guess there will not be any interviews for DS after the mid of December.

I did an interview at UCLA where I was the only one. Had nothing to do with my being a star – I happened to schedule it on Dec. 23.

Haha I think MCAT2 meant it in a tongue-in-cheek way. I happened to schedule my interview very early, so I think that explains mine.

It’s almost the 16th of october, a lot of us get to know where we will end up very soon! I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

Good luck lolly & MyO & everyone’s kids! No magic early date for me, but got complete emails from Harvard and Mayo today, so at least I’m making some progress! Glad Vandy went well for you lollybo

Some schools will have status updated on Monday. This is the latest we heard from one of D’s school.
I wish everybody just calm down, but it is crazy out there. One of schools that D. is still waiting has sent first bunch of rejections, D. did not get one. However, there are only 160 invites left to be sent out and the number is going down very fast.

I just got into medical school! Senior year is now infinitely more relaxed! Good luck to all of you, best of luck, I’m sure you all will rock!

lollybo, Big congratulations! Now you know you will be a doctor!

Congrats lollybo!

It’s so exciting to watch everyone edge closer to something they’ve been working for so long. Best of luck to everybody and thanks for sharing your process with all of us vicarious observers!

lollybo, congrats!
D. got into 2 also. One - personal call from Dean of Admissions at 00:50am, another was email within next half hour. Then by the morning it was more good news - second one invitied to apply to Merit scholarships. Very hard decision to make, she has no idea, planning on second visit at both.

Good luck to everybody. I am sure more good news will follow.

MiamiDAP, Big congrats to your D. It appears her “hit rate” is very very high. Now she needs to choose from one of the three (the other is her BS/MD program.)

Two of the schools DS applied to are supposedly early schools. But he has not gone to these two interviews yet. One of them will be toward the end of October, and the other one in January – the original interview date for the latter was at the beginning of October and he postponed it two times. I think he has completed about a half of his interviews, and let go of two interview opportunities (not a very wise move.)

We hope one school will show him love in the middle of November, the earliest day he could possibly hear anything.

^Thanks, she is very excited.
I have no doubt that your S will be faced with several options to choose from also. The best wishes.

Congrats lollybo and to your daughter MiamiDAP!!! Great news!! It must be great to have an acceptance this early on the cycle. A couple of schools I interviewed at will be sending results about 6 weeks after the interview date, so I won’t know anything for awhile -

mcat2, I am also hoping to get some love at the end of november or december!

When DS was interviewed at a school, he was asked where he had interviewed and what his impressions are about those schools. It is kind difficult to answer this kind of question.

Was any of you asked by your interviewer about the schools you had interviewed?

Congrats to all who have heard and have acceptances. That’s really fantastic. S’s sends info snail mail and his mail is notoriously bad so probably sometime mid week before he hears from his only interview so far. His gf is also waiting from same school but apparently nothing in today’s mailbox.
