update from earlier post; friends son(GPA 4.0/MCAT 40) who had the bad interview at UTSW and was later invited back for a second interview got accepted by them today. He got the video as MCAT2 son’s did. It’s between them and Baylor at this point.

My goodness, so much good news today! Congrats MyOpinion and hubblesdad friends son. What a wonderfull Thanksgiving for so many on this thread! (And we know Kristen’s is soon to come.)

Hey, bluedevilmike, guess who got an interview to your alma mater?

Duke Med, here I come :)

kristin and MyO, Big congrats!

Lots of congratulations to hand out tonight! Mcat’s S , MyO and Kristin - all great news!

When will you be there Kristin? I’ll be there on 1-12

Happy dance Kristen!

kristin, I’m very pleased for you. Look at your list of interview schools!!! You are really running with the big dogs.

Wow… I may be a bit premature on this thread since mine is only a Freshman Undergrad :D. However, four years ago I followed some of you resident posters, so I believe I’m in good company!!!

With that said, congrats to all you wonderful peeps and Parents…so very deserving!!!

Continued success on this journey!!!

Congrats guys, teach me your ways…

DS is currently on his interview trail at “lollybo-land.” Is it also very close to “kristin’s land”? :)

There are actually less than 10 interviewees on this interview day. And I heard the interview will end in the mid day. But it appears they interview applicants many days a week, because the medical school students there (who live in the dormitory “Olin Residence Hall” where the interviewees stay overnight also) said they had been tired of eating pizza for so many days.

Somehow DS decided to take some commuter train from the airport to the medical school. Is it how the students (undergraduate or the medical school students – I know these two campuses are separated by a very large park) usually travel to the campus after they arrive at the airport? It seems it is quite convenient to travel in this way. (much easier than taking the limo, which DS had to take to get to his college from the airport in the past few years.)

kristin and MyO, congrats!

curm,
“fantastic affordable state school vs. high-dollar, big-name private)”

-D. is faced with this already. We are not considereing price tag as cirteria, in a big shema of things the diff. is not that great, 15k as total over 4 years. Some people do not see that tuition at some state schools jump in M3. The diff. in ranking is 7 spots, but ranking is not considered by D. either. She also got notification that she was selected for Merit scholarship at private. Well, for her it is mostly the feel, how comfy it is and she is leanning towards state school (both are in-state). But she is planning on second visits. Interesting, it just occurred to me that both schools in a past have accepted her to UG with huge Merit packages, but rejected her from thier combined bs/md programs, and look where she is now, got in anyway.
D. also got WL at one of her Med. Schools yesterday. Oh, well, less confusion, unless she will get in at the end. It was not top on her list (but highest ranked), it is OOS and D. seems to feel more comfy in-state. Still one more interview in about 3 weeks also OOS, hoping for no snow for her driving.

MCAT2: if your S is at lolly’s current school, he’s in my hometown. Lucky guy, it’s a great place. I’m headed there next week for Thanksgiving break and seriously, this weekend couldn’t come sooner.

Lollybo, the next available day is 1/13. I have some friends and family in the area (boy, the really come out of nowhere when news of interviews comes in–I have wonderful contacts at all of my schools that were totally unexpected) so I might go out early anyway (it’ll be the end of my winter break). Shoot me a PM of your travel details if you’d be interested in seeing Duke together.

To MyO: another WOW CONGRATULATIONS…but at this point, I’m not surprised :)

To the rest of you guys: Thanks a million!

Mizzou tomorrow, Northwestern in 2.5 weeks, Mayo in 3 weeks, Duke is TBD.

It’s fascinating to me that the only schools I’ve heard from (above, plus a rejection from Georgetown) are the big-name schools I was halfheartedly expecting an early rejection from, given the nature of this entire process. I wonder why I haven’t heard from anywhere else. Hard to complain though, I’m thrilled.

Then again, any acceptance(s) from this group of 4 means canceling any future interview invites (add Harvard to the list, and you have a list of my top 5 schools + Gtown), so I guess lack of news from the rest really isn’t so bad after all.

MiamiDAP, I think this is because, in terms of the difficulty of gaining an acceptance, medical schools >>> college. Just look at the size of the the admitted class – it is a huge difference. Also, in college, as compared to being in high school, you have more chances to stand out.

Sometimes I think whether the premeds should be thanksful that:

1) the attrition rate is so high for premeds at most schools (one of your chance to stand out)
2) the science GPAs tend to be lower (another chance to stand out) and college-level classes are harder than the high school’s counterparts.
3) MCAT is harder than those high school standardized tests (yet another chance to stand out)
4) You are generally more active in club activities (easier to build your EC-related resume and to distinguish there.)
5) More research opportunities.

Without these hurdles, how can the adcom distinguish them?!

It’s perfectly fine to take the metro in St. Louis from the airport to the med school. The metro stop is almost right next to Olin so it’s pretty convenient. This is assuming you are arriving sometime during the day. The metro is probably more sketchy at night but I’ve ridden it at night as well and it’s been okay.

^^^ Do you go to washU med?

No (10 char)

^^^ lol, I just assumed that because you knew the area pretty well…

Just to chime in here, do not give up hope even if you have been complete for a really long time. I just got an invite to Wash U and UNC, after having been complete for 3+ months.
