I’m curious: Are some/most of you who have appointments having them “officially” offerred to you in a school assembly? Our H.S. seems to encourage it but I’m curious if that’s the case around the country. Is it a big deal in your schools? (Hopefully, yes!)

At my school (in MA) at the end of the year we have an all school assembly and various academic awards are presented. Last year was the first year that anyone from my school recieved an appointment (or even applied), and it was a pretty big deal. Mostly because no one knew anything about USAFA or the military. My ALO came and presented it to him/told everyone about it.

Anyone who are going to the service academies or who has been offered ROTCs are recognized at the senior awards night (where all the seniors and their parents are present). The awards are presented by the ALO (for serives academies atleast). I'm not quite sure about the politica climate in other schools, but in Portland, Oregon, we are extremely liberal and some people frown upon people entering service academies. Nonetheless, we still get recognized (in postive light). It's quite an honor and I'm definatly looking foward to it.

Solormax -- that's really nice to hear. We have a similar political orientation in NJ but that hasn't deflected the support of our appointees. It goes to show that only on the extreme end of the political spectrum is there a lack of support for what you all are doing! The vast majority of the country truly honors you and respects the path you are pursuing.

My ALO is coming to our school during Senior Awards Night in May to say a speech and officially present my appointment to me. I'm sooo excited.

There were four young men from my son's school who received appoinments the year my son received his. (USAFA class of 2008). The presentation at Senior Night was very impressive and also very moving. They received a standing ovation from their peers. I don't think there was a dry eye in the parent's section! Parents, make sure you bring lots of tissues with you. You will need them.

My school has a senior awards night where my ALO will present my appointment.

Solarmax, AFADAD thats too bad that political orientation has something to do with Service Academy appointments. I think its respectable for anyone who is willing to risk their life in the armed services should be aknowledge and i consider myself fairly liberal.

I know a kid from my graduating class last year was recognized by getting an ROTC scholarship.

Well, MY dd's school will be making a big deal of it---she's the entire graduating class. We homeschool. ;-) I'd love for her liaison officer to come up, but we'll have to see if that will work out. Several years ago when her big sister graduated, the Arts Center sent a representative to her senior recital to award her music scholarship. Our local ps kind of blows off the scholarship recipients--they don't want the other kids to "feel bad". Ugh!

heartcross- I thought I remembered hearing somewhere that only a handful of homeschooled kids get into each Academy every year (and that it is statistically harder to get in). If this is true, big congrats to her. Even if its wasn't true, congrats anyways

Thank you. We are proud of her and her hard work. I don't know about the statistics, but I know it's tough because many homeschoolers don't have the access to sports as we do in CO. But...judging from the response we've gotten from several homeschool boards that have been cheering her on, I think we'll see more applicants. The very first successful homeschool applicant that I'm aware of is now at Top Gun school!
