I had my exit interview at my undergrad today and I mentioned to the faculty that some people were already getting calls. They said that some schools move slowly through the apps and call people as they come upon promising applications. Others wait until they have all the applications gone through. Therefore there is no way to predict when you will get a call.

arg, didn’t get washu invite (congrats neuroapp!). hopefully, i’ll get one later.

and i did get that email. they’re screwing with our heads! :)

also, neuroapp: wash u invite by phone or e-mail?

Interview invite for both myself and a close friend to U Michigan PIBS today, my top choice! :)

Stats:

Do y’all know if they go through applications in alphabetical order? My last name is at the end of the alphabet… I didn’t get a call from UNC BBSP or UCLA yet (congrats again, GCN2 and hamster09!) – I called them today and they said that one of the adcoms just started making phone calls (UNC). At UCLA, they said that they send emails in small chunks to get the interview weekends filled – she said she had only sent out a few so far. I’m trying to be optimistic but hope this isn’t indicative of a long slew of rejections for me. I plunked down a pretty hefty sum of money to apply to a lot of schools. Sigh.

Everybody needs to remember that the vast majority of invites are sent between January 5 and January 15 (from from I can gather from sifting through 2008’s thread). Don’t panic this early in the process!

@neurohopes my last name is the last letter of the alphabet too. i dont think its in alphabetical order. i got a phone from Dr. Samulski and shortly after an email from Kathy Justice.
@cooper your program is immunology at Yale while mine is pharmacology. i wonder if the invite is by department. i did put immunology as my second choice though. =P

Hey hamster09 – I’m really happy for you!!!

I really hope I get into at least one of the 18 or so programs I applied to. XXXXXXX, I hope you are right.

Extend the window to late December, and I’d agree with that. Keep in mind that a lot of places have rolling admissions–last year, for example, Michigan sent out invites on both 12/18 and 12/22 (despite having an official policy of ‘no rolling admissions’), so interview results can be staggered. If you get an interview this early, fantastic; but the vast majority of schools (including most of mine) won’t be until after Christmas.

Good luck to everyone, and try to keep the panic from welling up. Someone last year was VERY right when they said that, while our lives revolve around these applications, this is just another (albeit important) administrative duty heaped on people who are just looking forward to the coming holidays. Relax.

XXXXXXX: it was more of a personal email from a faculty member I had contacted. He said that I should receive the official invite (with the two options for interview dates) soon…

so don’t despair! the first round of WashU invites are right around the corner!

@neurohopes i think you will get in. you applied to a wide range schools and for sure you’ll get interviews too soon. its also only thursday. you might get a call tomorrow.
best of luck everyone!

Serric, congrats! My stats aren’t that far off from yours, I have lower GRE, but higher GPA. U Michigan is my top choice right now too, so I am not losing hope!

I’ll put my stats here -they are in GS admissions 101 as well- for easier reference.

Stats:
F, Caucasian, 31
BS in cell and Molecular biology, Psychology minor from a small domestic public university.
Overall GPA 3.65
in major 3.85
started research in my first year, have three poster presentations, and a talk at undergraduate conferences. 2nd author on a submitted paper.

I am a poor test taker, and though I have developed strategies that I can use when taking a paper test (i.e., double checking your answers) these don’t work in a computer test situation, therefore my GRE scores came out about average. V:550 (75) Q:560 (40) AW 4.5 (63).

I have strong LOR’s from professors in my department that have worked closely with me in lab, both independently, and in-class and have observed me at conferences.

I have applied to 6 PhD programs in Neuroscience: Harvard, UM-ann arbor, UW-seattle, OHSU, Wayne state, and Tulane.

My applications were completed in late October, after attending SFN to meet and mingle with students currently in my programs of interest.

That’s some good news! (washu is one of my top choices)

@hamster09

Yes, indeed, the invites are by department. They even have different interview weekends for different department in the BBS cluster. The review process looks like its very different- we’re reviewed by different faculties and they require a subject test for pharmacology, but it’s not required for immunology.

Anyone know about the time line for Sloan Kettering or Cornell?

I just got the invite from U Chicago immunology! WOOT!

Whoa great news Cooper! Did they email you or a phone call?

Thanks, brains, and I wouldn’t worry too much: Michigan did two waves of interview days last year, one four days after the other, so don’t stress :)

@GCN2

both invites have been by e-mail

Congs to NeuroApp!!! WashU finally starts.

I’m just wondering, you guys who receive interviews, are you all domestic? Any internationals have received interviews?

Thanks~
