2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

This is to some degree a matter of taste, but I would keep it a lot less student-centered and a lot more research-centered in general. It’s fine to ask these questions, but some of them are a little overly numerical – you might want to ask them to describe the projects/thesis of a typical student in their lab, for example, rather than asking how many publications their students get.

Invite from U Chicago Molecular Pathogenesis and Molecular Medicine Program by email today.

I’ll probably have to turn down the invite though, my husband and I are a packaged deal and he was turned down from their med school. We still have Northwestern as an option in Chicago but we’d really like to do a Wash U/ SLU combination in St. Louis (much cheaper city to live in!)

Does anyone know about U Chicago Cancer Bio? Do they send out interviews at the same time as the rest of the biomedical sciences programs?

I think all the departments within the cluster might operate on their own schedules for sending out invites.

Did anyone ever answer your earlier question about Chicago interview weekends? I’m not sure if they are the same for all of the departments in the Biomedical cluster but the weekends I was told of are Feb 4-6 and Feb 25-27. She mentioned that the first weekend is getting pretty full though.

Thanks for the info. I’m hoping to hear back from them as Chicago is the other city my girlfriend has been accepted to. Good luck coordinating to you and your husband.

I guess I’m a little perplexed, I got news from UCSF and GSK, but nothing from Cornell and Chicago so far. Oh well, plenty of time left.

Just got an interview at NYU Sackler! Yay!!!

GCN2, that is really helpful! Thanks! I didn’t know how it worked but I guess grad schools then must let in a lot more people than they are expecting to attend (given that probably the best candidates get accepted 10 places and will only go to one school…)

I really appreciate it! Crossing my fingers for you on NY and Chicago schools!

Hi everyone! Is there anyone out there who has received the Michigan-PIBS email confirming that the application is complete, under review, and status notification will be shared towards the end of the month but still has not heard anything? I’m pretty sure the department is closed from X-Mas until 1.4.2010. Just curious. Thank you so much. Happy Holidays everyone!!!

If you can afford flying to the US to have a personal interview, I would tell you to go. One professor I e-mailed at one of the schools I am applying to told me that they rarely accept students they can’t meet (person to person), so I would think your chances get higher if you go to the school. Though I don’t know if that is true for all schools. I had another professor telling me that a personal interview was very important in the admissions process.

Well, I guess international applicants have their application reviewed later. I was told my application in U Maryland - Baltimore was going to get reviewed in January, and someone has been offered an interview already…
That’s annoying, I mean, not knowing for sure if I just didn’t get any interview or if my application has not been evaluated whatsoever.

NYU Sackler by email. I’m international. Yay. I think I applied to the Open Program.

And very nice, long/personal email from Princeton telling me my application should probably be redirected to the Neuroscience program (applied to Mol Bio).

Seeing interview invites from UChicago makes me nervous, although I applied to Computational Neuroscience and I haven’t seen that here yet.

Has anyone else heard from Princeton mol bio?

REGARDING YALE INTERVIEWS:

I’d like to apologize for giving false information (earlier I stated that all Yale interviewees are accepted). This has been true in past years but apparently, Yale’s bio programs NO LONGER accept all individuals who are interviewed. This practice was terminated after last year’s class. I confirmed this last night in conversations with a Yale graduate student. Apologies again.

also:
Northwestern’s neuroscience program sent out some invites by phone today.

anything from princeton qcb?

I know someone who got interview letter from P-ton on 12/22. His application sent in 12/2. Dates Feb 4-6

Uhh, he missed the deadline?

I got the impression P-ton due 12/2. All his applications submitted on the due date. To him, that is NOT procrastination.

regardless, that’s for mol bio, not qcb…right?

completed a phone “preliminary interview” on 12/24, christmas eve.
Scripps (TSRI), biology, phd program
when I asked why it is called a preliminary, the interviewer said because that’s what they base on to send the offers for an on site interview.
p.s. very few discussion about scripps on this thread, lol. I really liked their program and was pretty surprised to hear from them
p.s.s. Im international.

Hey everybody, this is my first post.

So far I’ve got interviews to Duke and Yale BBS.

As a guy, what is appropriate dress for these interviews, (considering we will be at these schools for a few days) am I supposed to wear a suit at all times or at least dressy clothes?
Sorry for the stupid question I just wasn’t sure.

@ xxxxxxx - Did your friend happen to speak about the nature of the Yale interview process at all in terms of how the weekend is structured? Thanks.

Best of luck to all and happy holidays.
