2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Hey everyone, is this standard?

I got the invitation call, as I mentioned, about U of T Austin for the neuroscience program this morning. She followed up with an email about a phone interview that will take place this week. The email also mentioned a “recruitment weekend” in March. I am a little confused… Is the recruitment weekend like the real interview and the phone interview a preliminary one? The email said I made the “short list” out of the 100 applicants but it seems a little confusing.

One of my bio teachers really sung the praises of that program. Have any of you heard much about it? It seems to be pretty decent for Neuroscience.

Thanks molliebatmit, and OUCH! I can only imagine!

And thanks to everyone else for the congratulations as well…

Good news is we agreed on 8/9/10! So it will all be said and done before the semester starts!

and xxxxxxx, people are imbalanced in many many ways, I strive to take all aspects of my life, from the minutiae to the earth shattering big stuff, equally. :P

@ neurohopes,

I know that Austin is a great place to live, and out of all the UT schools, it’s neuroscience has the best reputation. This is what I heard at SFN this year, when I was poking around asking students about their programs. :)

Thanks, brains! Good to hear about that. Hang in there for your interviews! ;)

Does anyone else absolutely hate the weekend? I don’t want to wait two days before I have a chance to hear from other schools!

Actually, I like the idea that I won’t hear anything tomorrow, so I can take my mind off it for a day at least.

does anyone know what percent of applicants who received an interview invitation from MIT Biology get accepted and when we can expect to hear back about the final admissions decision?

Never fear, molbio, I got invited to one of my interviews by email at 10pm on a Friday, and had many commuications with admit committees over weekends.

@molbio

I’m with you on this!!

Hi all!
I’d like to join this official freak out thread, as i haven’t heard from anywhere yet.

About me:
Chemistry, senior thesis focused on structural bio and biochem
GPA: 3.1, 3.4 in major (I went to a small liberal arts that is well known for lower GPAs)
GRE: 670 (96%)V, 800 (94) M, 4.5 (51) W

Research: 3 summer internships, 1 school year honors thesis, 4 years in a UC lab
Recs- 2 from UC profs, 1 from my undergrad thesis adviser
Research focus- structures/mechs/affinities/selectivities of protein+nucleic acid complexes

Applied:
UCSF- tetrad
Berkeley- MCB
Stanford- structural bio, biochem, biophysics
Harvard- MCB
UW- BMSD , due date was jan 1, so not too worried on this one yet
JH- chembio (also shares app with bio and biochem)- due jan 15, turned in late dec, so not too worried on this yet either.

Again, nothing heard yet.
Maybe I’ll get some of the California ones still, i don’t require a plane ticket or lodging. I’m a cheap interview.

Good luck to the rest of you! It seems really brutal this year.

I’ve just got an interview invitation from Upenn CAMB program. I was surprised because it’s saturday evening. I am very glad to get an interview invitation from Upenn : )

anxiousbiochem: UW- BMSD will send out interview invitations end of january.

I just got an interview invite from University of Washington Microbiology. They’re hosting sessions February 7-9 and 21-23.

Anyone else out there hear from them? I didn’t get an email, I got a phone call from a professor in the department. Is that normal?

@ neurohopes,

Conggrats, neurohopes! Do u mind to post ur stats? Thx.

Thanks, Odysseymao! I think they are posted a couple places but will put here too… I applied to a huge amount of programs because I had a major fear that there would be a massive amount of applicants because of the recession. Am glad I did because it looks like the competition is ridiculous this year…

9 months doing research at top memory lab in country (won grant award for the summer), 5 months doing research in psychology
No publications, boo…
2.5 years student-teaching chemistry and biology
Organization president, lots of service projects/honor societies/awards, psychiatrist shadowing (one semester), study abroad, tutoring incarcerated youth, etc. (a lot of stuff that probably does not matter to adcoms)

@variola

I’ve applied to U Wash Microbiology too. Haven’t heard anything from them :frowning:
Yea, it’s normal… any professor in their adcom may call you…
When did you receive the call?

@telojennie

Which track in UPenn CAMB did you apply to?

I can’t believe they send invites out during the weekend…

oh wait, yes I can, HELLO ACADEMIA!

I have a feeling I’m going to end up doing my PhD in my undergrad school, haha, all this money and time invested into applying to US. But, we’ll see.

@influenza I got it around 6pm ish EST, so 3pm PST.
I don’t know where they are in the invite list though so hopefully you’ll get a call in the next few days. Seattle is in the 206 area code, so look for that. =)

I hope I do…Thank you Variola !

Cool, Neurohopes.

U’ll do fine!!
