The taxes are done. I have already filed Fafsa and css profile to colleges. Some of the colleges only required Fafsa. What do I need to do now? Do I need to update of them of changes (disregard IDOC'ing the 2010 tax forms)? Or do I just wait till I get to the school and then the would re-evaluate based on paperwork?

Now you need to go to each college website and read through the financial aid section and make sure you have done everything they want. If you are currently a High School senior and are applying to, say, 8 colleges, then you have to comb through 8 rule sets (bummer!)

It will be easier next year because you will only have the one college to make happy.

Truthfully, it would be better if you took it one step further. Read the college website and then email the fin aid department and say “I’ve done the FAFSA, the Profile and have read through the college website for guidance. Once I have submitted the IDOC forms, is there anything else that is required?” You should get an answer back in a few days. You could also ask if there is any special departmental scholarships that require further documentation (letters of reference or whatever). Good luck!

It’s unclear to me, did you file FAFSA as “will file” or “taxes completed”? If the former, then you should go ahead and make corrections based on final tax numbers and resubmit as “taxes completed”

Yes, open up your FAFSA, adjust anything that needs to be changed, check the filed box and resend. Rule of thumb in the past said that roughly 1/3 of FAFSAs are verified by the colleges so you want the numbers on the FAFSA to match the information on the tax return. Since the FAFSA refers to specific lines on the tax return it shouldn’t take very long to go through and adjust any numbers that need adjusting. You’ll receive an e-mail again that says your FAFSA is processed and then you’re done with the FAFSA.

For the Profile, yes you need to check each college website to see what you need to do. We had one Profile college last year that didn’t require copies of the tax forms and one that did…some use IDOC and some do not…read each school and follow their directions. If you are unclear, yes send an e-mail to finaid and ask.
