2011-2012 Med school applicants and their parents

Ahem, curm…we’ve all read about what you southerners do with ‘family’…wasn’t that you with Burt Reynolds in a certain movie about Dueling Banjos? :D

got accepted at loyola recently. It’s one of my top choices so I am very excited!

Very happy news! Congrats

That’s wonderful, pccool! Congrats!! :)

curm, good luck to “little sis”
pccool, congrats!

PC: my wife’s onc attended Loyola Med and he has always said that it was ‘the best four years’…congrats.

blue, Deliver-us from our relations.

Update/Letter of Interest/Hail Mary letters should go out this week. I’m pushing hard. Time to act for the Texas med schools. (Interview invite season is closing. Nothing to lose now.) IMO, it’s a week late but…I’m just an advisor.

On a positive note, 2 invites may be enough for this kid. She should make a great impression.

In news from the pre-clinical front, my MS2 is continuing to perform very well but there is a big increase in effort compared to last year. I felt she might have over-committed and that may be the case as her term-time research is currently suffering from a lack of hours in the day. So, med students and med students to be, “balance” (as in balanced life) has always been my big conversation “word of choice” with my D, but “triage” is a fine word to learn, too. ;)

CapeCodLady, I sent you a message through your email. Your PM box is full.

Woo-Hoo! had dinner with D1 tonight.

Tomorrow is a milestone–she gets to do her first pelvic exam on a real live patient. (She’s been practicing on the rubber woman for a week.) She also gets to do her first prostate exam on a real live patient on Thursday.

D. has p/f system. Unless she fails (I hope not), we will consider her doing well. it has been extremely hard. She likes it so far. mentioned many times that she really appreciates her UG from all aspects of UG experience. Missing it a lot, visited several times.

S just learned that a paper on which he is an author has been approved for publication and will come out in January. He is only 3rd author but it it a reason to update his schools. He seems to be on “hold” at most of his reaches-some friends have been rejected and some interviewed/accepted but he has heard nothing either way.

So how does the update letter work? Does he just use the update section on the secondary app, or send a letter or an email? To who? Admissions? Professors he interviewed with? And should it be just about the article to be published or should he include anything else-restate his interest in the school etc.? Should he do the same at schools where he has interviewed and is waiting to hear? The advising office at his school isn’t great and I think the advice on CC is by far the most helpful.

Any more good news for folks (interviews/acceptances)? Seems so quiet. Crickets here at my home front. Hope everyone is doing well!

IIRC from last year, the period around Thanksgiving is pretty quiet. (Actually Thanksgiving thru mid-January was pretty quiet, although MD/PhD acceptances at our state med school come out the last week of December.)

Not many or no interviews post Thanksgiving–students are taking finals and med school don’t want to interfere with that.

Things ought to pick up again around MLK Day with more interview invitations.

Thanks, WOWMom. Was hoping for more excitement but will certainly be busy and distracted through the holidays. Guess we’ll have to sit tight!

Younger son visited Hubbellgardner over fall break. Hubbell is an intern at Vanderbilt. He reports that Hubbell, who was tall and thin, is now tall and VERY thin. We hope to fatten him up when he comes home for Thanksgiving. Hubbell is very busy but is enjoying the challenges. Medical school is just the beginning, it is not the end.

DS received his first acceptance! Woo-hoo!! Very excited that he will be joining the Medical School Class of 2016! Best wishes to everyone waiting out there! :)

Many congratulations to your S!

Thanks, WOWMom!! Still smiling :)

I bet y’all are. Congrats.
