Refuses to take the SATs more than once and refuses ACTS because "life is too short" and refuses to get caught in "test hysteria" Admits she's not particularly creative or visionary but a critical thinker to the core.

She's careful to guard her time and not get caught up in competitive activity grubbing--she makes lots of time for her friends and family.

Is somebody like that a fit for Carleton? Why or why not?

She should probably suck it up and try to get a 700 in math. They like to see those 700s. Also, I think one thing Carleton really looks for is kids who are very interested in Carleton. Does your daughter want to go there, or it it just your idea? I think that could make a huge difference. Is she serious about piano? If she makes a good CD that will impress the music department-- Carleton is very into chamber music and pianists are necessary for that. Also, a CD shows evidence of dedication and accomplishment. Her extracurriculars are great, but more important is how interested in those ECs she is. She should make a point of showing that they are meaningful to her. How long has she been doing them? She should continue to do the same ones next year; too much changing around shows lack of perseverance.
I think she's a very promising candidate.

Great ec's, great independent attitude which Carleton looks for, Sat's just finee...but carleton heavily favors kids who really want to go there (provided basic threshold qualifications). Very important to visit, interview, correspond, and have very solid, carefully done application.
Great School, but of the top ten LAC schools (as noted by US News & World Report) it is the least swayed by "just the numbers" in making application decisions...as per the application experiences of my children, nieces and nephews.

She has similar stats and ecs to my son who applied ed 3 years ago. He did take the SAT twice and had both math and reading over 700. He also visited the school twice and had an on campus interview.

My son is a freshman there this year. He never cracked 700 on the math, just on the verbal and SAT II Writing. He did have a 4 on the AB Calc and 3 on the BC Calc exams (took the AP exam junior year so he was able to submit the results) Fortunately Carleton has other classes to meet their math requirement, such as stats.

Where do you live mombot? My son did not visit the campus until after he was admitted, but we live in Texas and he had a full competitive debate schedule--most weekends were tournaments. Sometimes they have alumni interviewers in your area, but in our case they did not.
