My company gives out NM scholarships only to children of employees and it is my understanding that they don’t necessarily have to be a semi finalist or finalist to receive the award, just commended. How would I find out if this counts as one of the NM scholarships?

Do ALL commended get the money? How much does each student get? Is it one time or for 4 years?

Anyway…to check to see if those count as “official” check to see if the company name is here…

Did you read my post on how to get a corporate scholarship and a college NMF scholarship? If not…

May someone PM me the essay prompt? Pretty please? I’m in a dual enrollment program, and I’m on my college campus, which is pretty far away from my high school. It’ll probably take a while for me to get the application in the mail since my high school is on fall break now. I want to get the essay out of the way instead of wasting this whole week.

^^^

You might want to start a new thread with that question. I think someone posted the prompt, but don’t remember where.

I just found out that I’m a semifinalist and that i have to send my SAT scores now to NMSC. I took the SAT 3 times. Am I supposed to send all 3 scores or just the highest score from one sitting? Thanks.

you can just send the highest score if you want…

code number 0085

I’m in Florida, and my guidance counselor finally handed out the semifinalist packets yesterday. We have 10 semifinalists. Coincidentally, I happened to turn 18 yesterday. What a nice birthday present from the school.

Congrats…and Happy Birthday! (yesterday was my birthday, too…and I don’t know many people with Sept 14 as their birthday!)

How can you wait to submit your first choice school beyond the application deadline? Thanks.

You can put undecided now…and then submit your first choice in the late winter/early spring.

Although…check your schools for deadlines…some require being named #1 by January or so.

I don’t know of any school that requires being named #1 by the fall. But others can correct me if I’m wrong.

Yes, there is no reason to name a school now. But even if you do, they include a postcard that allows you to change. And even if you use the postcard, you can still call them with a change. Changes are possible into the late spring.

So there is flexibility at the NMSC level regarding the college designation. Where it can get stickier/earlier is with specific schools themselves, who may want the designation earlier.

I’m curious if there are public lists now that we’ve hit official announcement date, is there a place to find the listings? We’re sitting at 227 in Massachusetts and feel comfortable with that, but we’d like to see what’s being published.

NMSC releases state lists to the press but does not publish them on their Website. Some local papers publish names (either regional or state-wide) and some don’t.

Um…I know for certain I am a Semi-finalist, but my school hasn’t given me the “packets” yet. Are schools usually this late in giving the packets out?

^You should definitely ask your school about this ASAP. Then, if they don’t know anything about a packet for you, you should call NMSC and ask them.

You don’t want to be in a situation where the deadline is fast approaching and you’re rushing to comply. So call them as soon as you can.

On the following thread, there’s a post from today by another kid who did not get a packet. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/national-merit-scholarships/986427-cut-off-scores-semi-finalist-announcements.html

Good luck!

Just got my packet today (225 in NY). Very late, but my school’s guidance office has basically been turned upside down after massive budget cuts and downsizing. It’s frustrating for me to not have a GC right now, but I can’t blame them. Besides, the application seems simple enough.

sd6…

If you have any questions…just post them in this forum…one of us can help you thru this.

california’s cutoff was 2190 my counselor told me

My D just found out she is a Semi-Finalist… she is taking the SAT in Oct for the first time. Due to NMSF status, she is now considering signing up for the SAT in Nov also - just to ensure a good score.

Question#1 - Should we have the scores sent to NM ( code 0085 ) prior to knowing what they are? Or should we wait until we get scores and send them then? Question #2 - Is it crazy to sign up for both exams?

Congrats to your D!!! :)

Will she be applying to any schools that give big NMF scholarships?

It’s not crazy to sign up for both if you’re concerned that her Oct score won’t be high enough.

She can also submit Dec scores, but if she has midterms in Dec then that may not be a good time to take the test.

Go ahead and sign up to send free score…no big deal if the first set isn’t high enough.

NMCorp is not looking for some minor reason to keep your child from becoming NMF.

If either of her fall SAT scores is over 1960, she’ll be fine.

Here’s some info from another thread…

To go from NMSF to NMF…

1) keep your nose clean at school - you need the recommendation.

2) Take the SAT by Dec and have score sent to NMCorp - code 0085
(Typically a score over 2000 is considered good enough - altho some with scores of 1950 have reported making NMF.)

3) Receive the NMSF paperwork in September. Follow all the directions, write a nice essay, and return paperwork to school before the due date.

4) Check with school to make sure paperwork is submitted on time to NMCorp.

5) Keep your GPA strong at school; the school sends your transcript to NMCorp with your paperwork.

6) Don’t fret about picking #1 choice for college. That can be decided in late winter/early spring - depending on school’s deadline.

The kids who don’t make NMF after being named NMSF typically cause that to happen by…

1) bad behavior at school

2) poor academic performance (GPA issues)

3) didn’t do the paperwork, did it incorrectly, or submitted it too late.

4) wrote a rude/poor essay.

5) didn’t take the SAT, didn’t send score to NMCorp, and/or didn’t have a good SAT score.

If you receive a rejection letter stating that you didn’t make NMF, you can appeal. Some appeals have been successful.

Any questions…feel free to call NMCorp - they’re very nice on the phone.
