2007 National Merit Finalists!

I figured since letters are being mailed out to schools tomorrow and students next week that there should be an official thread to discuss the good news as it arrives!! I am currently a NMSF..waiting for Finalist notification! =]

However, I have a question to ask. I know that only about 1,000 NMSFs do not make it to Finalist standing, and that would mainly due to SAT scores, GPA, and ECs that do not match up to their PSAT score. However, I have heard of a few individuals who have already received notification that they were no longer in the running for Finalist standing due to a lackluster SAT score. Thus, does that mean they have slowly been notifying those 1000 who didn't make it? Just something I have been wondering about =]

Anyways, I hope that those who do get accepted can post up their stats as it might be helpful for the future classes!

How about adding your top choice schools and whether you have already been accepted?

Congrats Calculus! I have no idea what's going on with my school because I wasn't there today because of internship. Hopefully, I'll qualify as well.

Somehow this thread seems to be far less prestigious than college admissions...

I mean, there's only 6% chance that you won't make NMF as a NMSF. I would more want to see the stats for the people who get the $2,500.

i agree. btw, when are the winners actually announced? early april?

Agree. It's always intrigued me. I've known tons of NM finalists over the years but I'm not aware of a single one who got the $2500 from NM itself; lots of corporate awards (mostly where a parent works or has worked for the company) and lots of awards from colleges that participate but none from NM. So maybe this year we could crack the puzzle and figure out who gets the $2500 NM awards (meaning "what the profile is").

Just out of curiosity...

BTW, congratulations to all the finalists.

@ Dean:

On the Semifinalist Packet it says "March 2007"...who knows the exact date.

Oh and something that was pretty interesting. I didn't receive the formal Finalist notification but I got a letter from the University of Tulsa a few days ago and it concerned the scholarship for National Merit Finalists. From the tone of the letter, it seemed that I had already advanced to Finalist standing. Do the colleges know already? Or are they just speculating? It doesn't really matter too much but I guess the latter.

So National Merit sends letters to the finalists houses as well? I'm asking because I never recieved a letter at my house telling me I was a semi-finalist though the counselor thought that I should have. I'm not sure if it was never even supposed to come to my house, or it just got mixed up in the mail somehow. If not, I guess I'll find out at school this week.

See: http://www.nationalmerit.org/Merit_R&I_Leaflet.pdf

semi-finalist notification went only to High schools and in a general press release to the media (no home notification.)

Finalist notification mailed to high schools 2/2/07...will be mailed directly to student's homes 2/7/07. NM scholarships (from Natl Merit Corp) announced 3/22/07.

[but I'm not aware of a single one who got the $2500 from NM itself; lots of corporate awards (mostly where a parent works or has worked for the company) and lots of awards from colleges that participate but none from NM. ]

You know it seems kind of silly to worry about where it comes from.. as long as it shows up. As we understood it the award was an either/or at many schools. You certainly could take the 2,500 one time award or take the $130,000 award over four years where my D settled. It was our choice. :)

Good luck to the winners. You now have a problem alot of people wish they had. Remember if you start to fret over this school or that, try not to sound like someone buried to the waist in gold complaining they have nothing. Congrats on your success, you've earned it. Enjoy it.

I see. Thanks, nebcat!

I know someone who got $2500 from NM, but he was amazing (MOP and USAPHO).

I know a girl who got $2500 from NM as well. She is graduating from U. Penn this spring, accepted by Harvard Medical School. She is excellent!

when should we expect them?

2500s are picked by state, right?

If your parent doesn't work for a corporate sponsor and you are applying to a school that doesn't participate (or in some way reward NMFs), the only way there are $$ here for you is through NM itself (with its $2500 awards). Anyone falling into this category probably cares.

Grace or anyone :

My kid will probably attend one of the Ivy League schools depending on need based aid. He got in Yale already. Parents don’t work for a NMS corporate sponsor company. I have no idea about if Ivy schools participate and give NMS $2500 scholarships as they are need based (no merit scholarship). So would our kid still receive extra $2500 in aid from NMS itself? Or since he will receive need based aid, he will not receive any money. Could you clarify this issue? Thanks

mathmajor

NMS selects $2500 scholarship winners based on their achievements; it is not a need based aid. Your kid has a good chance to get it.

Not a good chance at all - only 1000 of the 15000 NMFs get the $2500 from NMC

lol actually from the wesbite:

"Beginning in March and continuing to mid-June, NMSC notifies approximately 8,200 Finalists at their home addresses that they have been selected to receive a Merit Scholarship"

so it's not a GREAT chance but not a horrible one either. =]
