Haha, I too will stop lurking…like bbqltw, got the interview at UPenn Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, with options for January 27th and February 10th. Good luck everyone!

hi biowwlaw, congrats on your invitation.please post your stats and are you domestic or international.Ive applied to UCSF BMS as well.
Also when did you send in your app.Thanx.

I’ll stop lurking as well. Got an interview invite by phone call this morning from UCSF neuroscience. Best of luck!

Hi guys, Please post if you think UCSF BMS has sent out emails to all successful apps or does it happen in waves.Nerve racking but humbled to see all the guys getting invites.Congrats

I wouldn’t worry about it, judging by past years threads this stuff is almost always done in waves. They handle a ton of applications and there is just no way to notify everyone on the same day. But if you don’t hear in the next couple of weeks then I would be concerned. Also, with UCSF, don’t waste time checking their silly website. I applied for an REU there last summer and my status on the REU application page still says “under review”…

Are most of these invites coming from people who applied significantly before the deadline? Also, at what point should we start getting worried about the invites? Mid-January?

Does anyone know what the odds are like for being accepted after being invited for an interview at UCSF BMS?

Screening the last years thread …it seems UCSF BMS takes 30-50% of invitees. Did you get invited for interview ladeeda119?

For some schools you may not hear until late January, but it’s hard to say exactly. I got my apps in early, but also have a friend who was closer to the deadline and has got invitations. I think they go through the top applicants first and invite them early and then invite more. Not 100% sure though. Anyone else have thoughts?

@fallbiomed2011: Yes, I got an interview at UCSF BMS =) I am quite surprised (and nervous) by the 30-50% acceptance rate after interviews though…is it like this for most schools?

Uhh it’s nowhere near 30-50% acceptance. Let’s just say that if they’re willing to shell out the cash to fly you out and wine and dine you, chances are rather good that they’ll offer you admission. I won’t put a number out there, but chances are good. Don’t stress out about interviews - enjoy the experience and you’ll be fine.

I did a summer research program at UCSF, and I do believe that they put an emphasis on things like “fit” and aren’t just obsessed with GREs/grades. They also value diversity and people of different backgrounds. Having spoken with several grad students/post docs about the admissions process, they do tend to accept a lower portion of candidates that they interview, perhaps slightly south of 50%. I would say that whatever screening process they do works: across the board, the people that I met were not only great scientists, but also awesome, friendly people. But definitely don’t let it stress you out; enjoy the weekend, enjoy SF, and be yourself :)

Just a bit of advice. Do not take what people say about “once you get the interview it’s no big deal” too literally. Last time I applied my fit was not great. I interviewed at 3 schools and was not accepted at any. I did not try very hard and took the interviews as mostly informal because I had been told they accept most people. Yes, they already like you when they ask you to interview, but you are in no way in so please learn from my mistakes and don’t assume you will get in…

The 30-50% sounds more like it describes the % of interviewees that end up choosing to attend BMS. Which means acceptance rate is roughly twice that. 60-80% is probably a reasonable estimate.

Still waiting to hear back from Upenn pharmacology. I submitted my app on Dec. 7th what about you, jkp789? Also, has anyone heard back from UNC-CH pharmacology?

*labtech
Did you apply to the bbsp? They have made at least their first round of calls.

@laurend: yes I did apply to the bbsp. I submitted my application the day before it was due and two of my letter writers were late in submitting their letters. Do you think they will send out another wave of invites?

Probably. The people I have known who got invitations are for the first two of six
weekends. I do know one girl who had a late letter writer and heard the day after her letter made it. I wouldn’t worry too much yet. Hearing earlier is always a good sign of course.

@labtech: I submitted mine on the 6th.

@labtech, I also applied to bbsp pharm. i turned my stuff in during thanksgiving and everything was completed on the day of deadline. I havent heard anything yet.

@laurend, have you heard from umich pibs yet?
