2011 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Acceptance rate post-interview can vary a lot depending on the institution. It can be as high as 90%+ at some and as low as 40% at others, even at the ones that wine and dine you. Regardless, an interview is a chance to meet new people and learn great science. To echo advice already given here, put your best foot forward, but don’t stress and enjoy too!

Also, to anyone who has applied to Harvard BBS, reminder that BBS does not interview. Acceptances will be notified in mid-January.

thanks for all the replies everyone!

I have heard from UNC, wake forest and Maryland but no not UMich. I applied direct to neuro there, but I do know people who heard already.

Any idea what happens if interviews cross over? They all seem to happen around the same time, and if you applied to a lot of programs and get many invites, then chances are some of them will overlap. Can you still get accepted by a program if you can’t make it to the interview, or is it basically the same as giving up your spot? This hasn’t happened to me, just a theoretical worry.

I’m also curious about interview cross-over. I emailed 3 of my ‘top’ schools that I hadn’t yet heard from to see if they would at least tell me when the potential interview dates would be held so I could try to save those dates just in case, but I only heard back from one of them (and then was invited for an interview a day later…).

I’m not really sure what to do in terms of scheduling with other schools, since I’m afraid to miss out on something. Any advice on this as well? I need to book airline flights, but my departure location may change if I’m invited to another interview beforehand…

Generally though, schools will have at least two interview date options so one can hope that all of the scheduling meshes together perfectly…

The programs do try to coordinate their weekends by not overlapping with their top competition as much as possible, and by coordinating weekends with other schools in their geographical area so people can go to, e.g., UCSF, then Berkeley, then Stanford.

You could book your plane tickets now and then pay the airline fee to change the reservation later. You could also wait to book your tickets for a few more weeks until you hear from more programs.

congrats to all who got invitation. :)

Received an interview invite from UC Berkeley PMB yesterday.

No. But as Mollie already said, programs try to coordinate their dates with each other so that you don’t have to “pick and choose.” And when clashes do arise, most programs will offer to schedule you a personal interview on a separate date, but those are honestly not a lot of fun.

You may just have to decline some interviews, after all, there are only so many weekends between mid January and early March. In most of my cases, travel agents made the travel arrangements and were pretty good about working with you to make changes. I had this done a couple times.

Berkeley and Stanford mesh well, and there is even a bus that goes between I believe. Also, Stanford is always the first weekend in March if I recall correctly. The UCSF admins actually gave me a lot of grief for wanting to schedule my interview the day before Stanford’s, even though there were a good dozen of us that came on this “unofficial” interview time.

Congratulations to those who got interview invitations!

Do internationals usually fly in for interviews also?

Just wanted to say you can get accepted if you can’t physically make it to the interview (at least for some schools). You will at the very least have to do a phone interview. However, having overlapping interviews isn’t an excuse to not make it to one of the schools; many schools will let you visit for a day or two whenever it fits into your interviewing schedule. But I know several internationals who couldn’t make it to the U.S. for physical interviews that were accepted after phone interviews. Several international did fly in for in-person interviews as well, and I think that is always a better option for the applicant if possible.

@laurend congrats! I just got the schedule so let me know what weekend you’re thinking about going.

Probably the 21st. I don’t have an interview then yet.

Just got an email from Harvard neuroscience. Interview! Very excited!

Just got a UW-Madison invite via email!

To update the previous post, its for the MDTP (microbiology doctorate training program).

I just got an invite via phone to for Duke’s Genetics and Genomics program!
I’m so excited and nervous D:. What do they ask you there o-o.
