2011 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Some schools interview better candidates earlier. Most schools don’t.

Of course you can – it’s your interview schedule, and you’re in charge of what interviews to attend and not to attend.

You can always try to reschedule with the second-choice school, but sometimes that will not be possible. It’s unfortunate, but every year some people decide not to attend weekends for schools lower down their lists, even after confirming their attendance and purchasing airline tickets. The programs are aware that this will happen. There are only so many weekends during the interview season.

@ashmaniac09 - do you mind saying which program at Rockefeller you applied to? also I know they invite you for a campus visit upon acceptance - did they give you specific dates or is it just up to you?

Hi norcalneuro,

I applied to the David Rockefeller Graduate Program, which is the only PhD program they offer (besides the MD/PhD). It’s true that they invite for campus visits, there are two weekends, either March 3-5 or March 10-12.

did you also apply at Rockefeller?

First of all, congrats to all who have received interviews and/or acceptance into their programs. I am personally just a little paranoid right now. I know you all, as well as a friend or two, that has gotten calls for interviews into Yale and UNC BBSP. I am getting really worried that I won’t get a call, and I only applied to 4 universities. Here are my “stats”:

GPA: 3.701
GRE: Q:730 V:610 A:5.0
Research Experience: every fall and spring since admission, and 2 of the 3 summers

With all of this talk about people getting phone calls, I am starting to get really paranoid. Does anybody have any input? Should I start to get worried, or should I just sit back and hope that my extensive research experience and decent GPA will get me an interview? Any help from anybody would be greatly appreciated. THANKS EVERYONE, and again CONGRATS to those that have gotten calls!!!

I’m with you - I only applied to 6 universities and have gotten 1 call. I actually work in one of the programs that I applied to and my PI told me that the committee continues reviewing applicants until they’ve filled all of the slots in the program. Since we are still waiting to hear (I say “still” but it’s only December) that means we didn’t stand out instantly as EXCELLENT applicants…which is fine. It doesn’t mean they don’t like us. Some of the people they invite for interviews won’t come and so spots open up. Then, some of the people who are accepted will decline so spots open up. I really wouldn’t worry until late January.

Congrats Ashmaniac on Rockefeller! I also got the big FedEx package from them about two weeks ago. It seemed so early I thought their system screwed up or something.

Over on thegradcafe, it looks like Rockefeller accepted people starting just before around Christmas through much of January, so the waves of acceptances are just beginning!

Phone call invitation to interview at WashU for the DBBS Molecular Cell Bio program :)

ashmaniac09 - yep I applied to rockefeller’s neuro phd program. I meant to ask which department you applied to, thinking maybe they sent out invites by department, but it sounds like there are waves of invites so I’m not all that worried (yet), just hopeful

I go to Rockefeller now for neuro and I didn’t get my acceptance in the mail until February 2nd last year so don’t give up hope people. Several people in the program were also notified around then so don’t worry if you are not in the first wave.

GSK interview invite via email (dates: Jan 18-20)! Pretty excited.

My stats:

International applicant (non-US degree).
Cum. GPA: 3.52 Major GPA: 3.76
GRE 800Q 580V 4.0AW
1.5 years research experience all focussed on cancer (3 different labs)
My LORs are pretty solid, which I believe played a huge factor.

Finally got my UCLA ACCESS interview via email today!

Hey sirtuin, congrats to you too! will you attend the open house, and when?

norcalneuro - sorry for the confusion! My interests are in the Medical Sciences and Human Genetics Department. But since they mention that the departments are only loose, I think they do not send out invites by departments, but rather in waves. so do not worry :)

@cantstoptherock: can you tell me a little about student life at Rockefeller? How is the atmosphere - collegial or competitive? How is advising, I heard that you have to be more independent than at other schools? What about housing, how big are the rooms?

Just got a Mount Sinai interview for Jan 10/11 via email – so soon!!!

Also, a couple people were expressing concerns about not hearing back from schools yet. I know that a LOT of schools are closed between Christmas and New Years, and specifically I know that Yale MCGD has only filled their first interview weekend so far. They will be making offers for their second weekend after the break is over, so just hang in there! (I’m waiting as well… trying to just put it off my mind until after New Years)

Congratulations kurplunk18!!! When did you submit your application? And were you able to track the status of your transcripts/test scores from your account? I can’t and I’m not sure whether I should call and ask if they received everything they need.

@gtugce, I submitted my application early November, but it wasn’t all ‘officially’ complete until early-ish December according to their website. I was checking my status pretty regularly since I had a couple of transcripts and wanted to make sure that they all arrived. They had a problem with that, so I had to resend it, but I’m pretty sure that it just got lost in the large Mount Sinai system (apparently that’s what happens if you forget to put a box number). I would call them just to make sure that everything is complete, though they have very specific times that you can only call. It never hurts, especially when the website isn’t always up to date.

@ashmaniac- Congrats to you too! I will attend their open house, I don’t know which one I’ll go to yet. I’ll decide that once I see when other schools have their open houses, but I’ll definitely go to one of them. I’m especially excited for the “NYC nightlife” options they mention in the admissions packet.

@canstoptherock- I would also be interested in hearing about your experience with Rockefeller’s atmosphere. I’m also interested in their housing options; they list rents in their student apartments as only ~$550-$750, which is DIRT CHEAP for Manhattan!!! Are the rates really that low, and what are the rooms actually like? Of course we’ll find out this for sure during the open house weekends, but I’m really wondering about the super-cheap rates they claim to charge.

@kurplunk18: congrats for the Mount Sinai interview!!!
it’s good to hear that they finally process the applications, haha. I still have some troubles with my app, similar to what you described (maybe a little more ridiculous): I submitted my app on November 30, and a week later, the website stated that my application was complete, all transcripts received, and “GRE verified”… however, another week later, the status of my app being complete was changed from yes to no, which I couldn’t understand until two days later, my “Test scores” said: no current status!

Being completely confused, I wrote an email to the gradsecretary, and only yesterday I got a reply, saying that my Toefl scores were received, but my GRE scores were missing, and could I please make ETS submit them again!!! ahhhhhh!!! and that after the website had initially “verified my GRE scores”… so now I’m still waiting to get this app complete…

anyway, congrats again to you, kurplunk18!! ;)

Thanks! Yeah, everytime I called them, they seemed to be unable to even find record of my application and then they had record of one transcipt, but not another and the next time I would call, they had the opposite one! It was kind of ridiculous. But the good news is that, in the end, things do work out, you just have to keep at it with them. All worth it in the end :)

Just got my GRE bio subject test scores back for one I took in November. I did really well, 98th percentile- is it worth it at this point to email programs that I haven’t heard back from yet to tell them?

@SuperPiePie

which program did you apply to at duke?
