2011 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

@fallbiomed2011/bio300
no idea sorry! i know they sent some out in december, and i got mine this past week. so it’s been an ongoing process (not like they only sent out one round and if you didn’t get it, you’re out). so they’re probably still ongoing? i’d try calling.

@bio300
I heard from Tufts Genetics last Thursday and I think I saw folks on this forum heard from Tufts Immunology recently as well. The interview dates for Genetics are Feb 11 or 18

I received admission from Harvard BBS today!! I’m international.

So the grad students in your lab are going to Weill even though they didn’t attend the recruitment weekend?

I wish I could switch things around, but the other interview is pretty much set in stone for the 17th, so I can’t (and don’t feel good about) asking them to change everything.

Do you or anyone know the acceptance rate of students post-interview?

@biol300

I applied to Immunology and heard from them on 1/16

@gradTomorrow

I am not sure about acceptance rate, i think it really depends on the school. I wish there is a website or something out there to give us more informtaion? I would like to know too.

Hey zfish to what program did u apply to?

@Microkel
I got a call from Stanford Micro on Jan 7th and a packet in the mail on the 15th.

@variola
Haha, cool. What is your area? Whose lab are you in?

@Variola

Since you’re familiar with UW micro, do you have any idea if the Pathobiology group has begun to send out invites?

@gradTomorrow

It surely depends on the school/program, but according to this web site (which might be outdated) ([Stanford - HHMI Pregrad program](http://pregrad.stanford.edu/phdfaq.html)), for Stanford biosciences in general:

“For example, last year the Stanford Biosciences Ph.D. program received about 1000 applications, interviewed about 250 students and accepted about 175 students.”

For Harvard systems biology, in 2009, according to one post in Gradcafe results, 29 were interviewed, 16 were accepted, and 2 were waitlisted. Harvard systems bio web site says that they accept “around 12” out of “about 20” interviewed.

So, it is ~55-60% for Harvard systems bio, and ~70% for Stanford biosciences. I don’t have any information about other programs.

Anyone have any comments on whether it is rude/audacious to ask to interview with really famous people/Nobel Laureates? I feel like it is unlikely that these people spend much time on campus (Berkeley specifically made a joke in their invitation that “Steven Chu is a bit busy in Washington D.C. right now…”). At Caltech, I was thinking about asking to interview with David Baltimore. Thoughts?

harvard BBS acceptance by email. international studied and working in us.

I am international as well but doing my undergrad in the US. I haven’t heard from Tufts or Harvard BBS yet. I spoke to Tufts ISP last week and they said they were still reviews applications but since the interview dates are coming up we should hear word very soon (if we’re getting an interview that is)

Yeah I am assuming Tufts Sackler interviews applicants in each of the 8 programs separately… They are only taking 5 this year for immunology.

@sunkist7

I don’t think it is rude/audacious, but it might be risky. These people are famous for a reason, and from personal experience, although there are exceptions, they tend to be exceedingly smart AND intimidating. When you talk about the field or his papers, he might be able to tear your argument apart–and without hesitation. However if your personal interest truly overlaps with a famous person/Nobel Laureate, why not? Just make sure that you know his field well and do your homework about the person (read his most important papers well enough to be able to discuss them) before the interview.

I applied for the Tufts Cell, Molecular and Developmental program. Anyone hear from them yet?

Anyone heard from Caltech CNS or Tri-I CBM?

@sunkist7 I think that more than rude it could be risky. I worked with one and I think they can be intimidating. Their decisions weight a lot and if you make the smallest mistake it could cost you your spot

@MicroAndCellSci I’m interested in virology and viral pathogenesis. I’m still doing rotations so I don’t have a lab yet, but my current rotation is in Kelly Lee’s lab.

@flutopian, No I don’t have any concrete info on the pathobio group, sorry. I think that the AdCom met last week, but I’m not 100% sure.

@Sunkist7, You can certainly request to interview with NLs, but to be honest it’s extremely unlikely that they will have the time to interview you.

von neumann – did you happen to apply to MIT csbi? do you know anything about interview invites for csbi?
