2011 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Thank you bmc. I was just wondering why some applicants that were admitted to harvard bbs in gradcafe forum say they have an interview when bbs website clearly states that they don’t interview people.

@ Imm2010

Me too just got an interview for Immuno Merge ID track for Tufts, i am excited. Congrats to you

@Imm2010 did you get an email or talked to a Professor, if you talked to someone what did they tell you or ask you, thanks

i only received an email from Immunology at Tufts

@immuno2011

Congrats to you too! Haha it looks like we’ve applied to similar places (Uconn too?). I received an email asking me for a near future phone conversation to discuss the program and find a suitable interview date. What dates does your email give you? Mine didn’t mention any dates.

I would never say I know everything about grad school admissions. :slight_smile: But I am a Harvard BBS fifth-year.

BBS does not interview, but accepts students outright. I do, however, seem to remember that last year there were a few international applicants (from, I think, China) who reported having a phone interview, so I don’t know whether there are some students/countries where BBS prefers to speak to the student over the phone before offering a formal acceptance. It is not the standard practice.

I am heading to the med school campus this week for a journal club, and I will stick my head in the BBS office and ask about this if I remember.

EDIT: I should add that perhaps people are marking “interview” if they don’t know that BBS accepts rather than interviews. I didn’t know, when I applied, and I remember thinking I must have been confused to think that the professor who called me had said I was accepted.

@imm2010

Yep we applied to similar places, i am excited for the interviews. I got same email as you, i replied with some times for them to call me. I am sure i will see you at some of these interviews

congrats

Stats:
“Public ivy” undergrad with a 3.93 GPA 3.96 in major (Microbiology and Cell Science and a Psychology double major). 2 years of research in the same lab with an associate professor. Unfortunately, no publications and my project has fizzled a bit because the final piece of data needed for publication doesn’t seem possible before I graduate. Will graduate summa cum laude with thesis, however.
Also, I am creating an online version of the undergraduate course my PI teaches. I am recording all the lectures and creating other course materials.

Applied: UMichigan PIBS-Micro and Immuno, UWisconsin-MDTP, UC Davis-Micro, Stanford Biosciences-Micro and Immuno, UWashington Seattle-Micro, Harvard-BBS Micro and Mole Gen, and UF-Micro

Interviews: Michigan, Wisconsin, Davis and Washington (the same weekend! =/ ) and Stanford (excited! =) )

Waiting: Harvard (lots of nail biting, it is my top choice) and UF

Hehe… thanks molliematmit… if you can hear something or find out something about a southamerican student (Peru, specifically) applying for PhD then that’s me!! :slight_smile:
Most importantly, whether they will still sending admission letters until the end of january

@MicroAndCellSci UW-Seattle has two interview weekends, which are you attending?

Feb 13th-15th

What about you?

Hey all!

I posted my boyfriends stats a few months ago, he is a masters student applying to several PhD programs in the hopes of doing stem cell research. He applied to UConn, Wesleyan, UMass Medical, Mt Sinai, GSK, Einstein, Weill Cornell, and possibly one or two others that I’m forgetting. To my knowledge, he hasn’t heard back from any of them yet. So my question is: is it too soon to worry?

Is he an international or domestic student? I am also applying for stem cell program in mssm, duke and harvard Bbs. Iam international student. I submitted my applications close to deadline so I assume it will be one of the last ones to be reviewed and therefore get results later

What programs has Tufts notified? Does anybody know? If people who got interviews at Tufts could post what programs they applied to I’d really appreciate it, I’m still waiting to hear from them, thanks!

did anyone hear from stanford neuroscience? that’s my top choice, but i haven’t heard anything yet, wonder if they are still sending out invitations?

@MicroAndCellSci I’m a first year in the UW Micro department so I’ll be at both, but on the other side. =) Looking forward to seeing you, tho!

@bashibazouk

I tried to reschedule Weill and they said they only have 1 official recruitment weekend (contacted a few days ago). I’m not sure if this means they’re done reviewing apps or not?

Although I knew it was coming, I’m sad about not getting Stanford/Harvard :(

@bio300: tufts ISP has sent out invites and their dates are jan 28, feb 18, and feb 28 (I think feb 28 has a little different schedule though)

@biology123

I’m in the same position regarding Weill. I was told they would try to make alternate arrangements. I hope this doesn’t mean telephone interview. I really would like to visit the campus in person and meet with faculty. Any ideas as to how you will be handling this?

@kp12746

I really like Weill so I just moved everything else around it and took alternate dates for some other universities. I was asking about this, and both the grad students in my lab did not go to the normal recruitment weekend. Obviously, they still go to the school. I’d probably arrange alternative dates based on preference and convenience. Because there’s just no way to squeeze it all in.

So far, I think I’ve got normal recruitment weekends for most. I know for one of them the school mentioned will be structured differently. But they offered it to me as one of their set alternatives, so I’m guessing it’s still alright.

hey bio300,
Im waiting on tufts ISP too but Im an international.I hope they are not done with the invites as yet.

biology123…has tufts finished reviewing/sending invites for the ISP program including internationals?

@MicroAndCellSci

How and when did you hear from Stanford?
