Yay!!! Did you get an email or phone call?

edit…just actually reread your post, got it! :)

Yay!!! Did you get an email or phone call?

edit…just actually reread your post, got it! :)

congrats laurend!

congrats laurend!!! this is awesome. When did you submit your apps?

Congrats laurend!

I also got my first interview invite today by phone and e-mail. UCSD Biomedical Sciences! I’m really excited because it’s my first choice.

Congrats, guys!

IMSAgeek-- you’re applying to Weill Cornell, right? Have you heard anything from them yet? Also, when did you send in your application materials to UCSD?

I didn’t apply to Weill Cornell, no.

I sent the complete application on Nov. 29th (though my GREs, transcripts and one of the LORs arrived sometime in mid November).

The deadline for UNC was the 7th, but my apps were done in the middle of November.

Hopefully this means calls will start rolling in because I would love to hear from several places before the holidays!

I’ve got a general question for you guys…

When we talk about publications in our application profile, do most applicants have their papers published in papers with good impact factors (say ~10)?? I’m just curious what most applicants who have published have to say.

My first author publication is in a low impact factor journal(ie. about 1), but that is because we got scooped and therefore we cut that particular project short. Theoretically, had we not been scooped and had I finished what the other group eventually put out, it would have be in a journal of ~10.

The other manuscript I am on that is about to be submitted would be in ~10 impact factor, but I am third author on this, not first.

Then,I have multiple Protein Data Bank Deposited structures, which I don’t know what you would count those as since they are just database publications.

Just discovered this forum and have to admit I am mildly (extremely) addicted. Figured I’d add my stats as well. Comments/Suggestions are welcome!

-Cellular Biology and Molecular Genetics Major (UMD College Park)
-Overall GPA: 3.84
-Science/Math/Physics GPA: 3.86
-GRE: 710V 650Q 5.0W
-Biology GRE: 850 (95th %) 99th% for cellular and molecular biology
-3 years of independent research identifying and characterizing host-pathogen interactions of Trypanosomes (performed Y2H screening, Pull-Down, Co-AP and BiFC assays).
Thesis Dissertation on my research. Defended in October and received High Honors (highest honors awarded for an undergrad thesis).
-no publications Been collaborating with a lab in Brazil and our results will be compiled into one manuscript upon completion of their work within the next year
-presented at one regional symposium (received 1st in my category) and one small symposium held annually at UMD for undergrad, grads, post-docs and visiting profs (received 3rd place in my category)
-received HHMI Research Fellowship ($6500 per year) in support of my project
-Took Graduate Immunology (A) and Graduate Virology (Grade pending, so far an A) at UMD for undergraduate credit
-TA for Organismal Biology and Anatomy 2 Laboratory
-LORs from 1. Thesis Reviewer/Grad Immunology Prof: very well-respected in the field
2. Research Mentor
3. Advisor, Professor for 2 upper level cell biology courses and involved in thesis program so she knows my research thoroughly

I’m applying to the following programs in the Biomedical Sciences:

Weill Cornell
Albert Einstein
Columbia
U. Penn
CUNY
UMD (CP)
UMD Baltimore
JHU
Drexel

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, particularly if anyone has any ideas as to whether or not my low GRE quant. score and lack of publications will hurt my chances significantly. Thanks and good luck to everyone!

IMSAgeek.

When is the UCSD interview weekend that you were invited to?

this is probably the week most of the biology departments meet and discuss admissions right…?

For sure in December… just saw the forum from last year and it was definitely this week for early calls/emails. Best of luck to everyone!

this process is really wearing me down.

The interview is February 18th/19th. I haven’t received any other details yet.

I just received an invitation for an interview with Johns Hopkins Chemistry-Biology Interface Program. :)

congrats NS1A!!!

Hello,

Have just found this thread so am gonna start with my stats:

GPA: roughly converted ~3.5 (UK system)
GRE: 640Q, 590V, 4.0AW
Research experience:
1 year at GlaxoSmithKline doing work that helped narrow down my interests in Immunology.
0.5 years for my undergrad honours thesis-I came up with the proposal based on the work that I did at GSK
LORS: academic supervisor at undergrad uni, supervisor at GSK who had a very big role in my choice of grad schools because he’s worked in some of them or knows people who have or who are still there, manager at GSK who’s very well known in the little niche of Immunology I’m interested in, other supervisor at GSK who spent a lot of one-on-one time with me in the lab.

Programs I’ve applied to:
UCSF
Harvard
UPenn
Rockefeller
Yale
MIT

There are at least 3 people at the first three places that are doing what I would like to research, 1 at Rockefeller, 1 at Yale and 1 potential PI at MIT (dunno why I applied there!)

I’m also applying to three more places (2 in Europe, 1 in Sinagpore)

I keep feeling like I’ve aimed too high but the people who know me best scientifically kee telling me otherwise. Not sure if they’re just being polite (as is typical in the UK!) so would appreciate any comments no matter how harsh!

So far I’ve heard back from UNC, Case Western and Pitt with interview invitations. Still waiting on a few others.

I’m new to this whole process and was hoping someone might have some advice on how to handle scheduling the interviews. I’m hesitant to commit to an interview weekend at one school in case I hear back from one of my top choices inviting me to a recruitment weekend that same weekend.

Any thought on how to handling scheduling/confirming these dates? Should I hold off on responding to my low choice schools til I hear back? Or can I send them an email expressing interest, but not commiting to a date for sure? Or should I confirm…but then how frowned upon is it to cancel and try and reschedule? Because I do want to interview at the schools I get interview offers, but I think it’d be best to interview on the recruitment weekend at my top choice schools.

Sorry if this is confusing… Any tips would be great! Thanks and congrats to people who have gotten responses so far!

Congrats on everyone who scored interviews! I am very interested in hearing other people who got invites so I can keep track of which schools are sending them at what time.
