Secondary fees will run from $50-$150 PER SCHOOL for most schools. (yeah, ouch)

Clothing? Interview suit and shoes.

Meals & lodging while traveling. Incidentals like taxis/shuttles when traveling.

Once accepted, there will be a criminal background check (IIRC, about $60-$100) and some schools require a physical exam and personal health history.

So, until there’s been a secondary request, is the only “per SOM” cost the initial $3X per school to AMCAS? I thought that there was another fee to the SOMs besides that.

Cosmetic
To clarify, if by chance you were referring to UTSW, it is not under federal investigation for Medicare fraud. Parkland Hospital has been under severe scrutiny by the Dallas Morning News in what appears to most to be a witch hunt but has resulted in some sanctions and the resignation of a number of top officials.

UTSW has not been the focus of anything other than investigation travel expenditures of a key administrator who also is one of the top fundraisers.

The DMN has been relentless in their attacks, much to the chagrin of many here in Dallas.

^UChicago would send a rejection to most literally within hours after recieving application fee. Looking back, D. should have not applied, but we did not know that and she applied only because of her application to NwU (Feinberg) where she was accepted but choose to go somewhere else.

The apps are in, now the waiting (and praying) begins.

We will be over-the-moon if son gets into UAB…very good SOM and instate (cheap!)…and only an hour away! We’d be thrilled with Vandy as well, also only an hour away (in the other direction…the benefits of living near I-65… )

I need to start some Novenas…I need my Italian grandma’s help with this…she was the Novena Queen when she had 5 sons serving in WWII at the same time…and all came home safe and sound. Grandma Mary, can you say some Novenas for your great-grandson? (do they read CC in heaven??? )

Once apps and transcripts are in, then AMCAS processes. Does AMCAS wait for all the LORs to be in? How about the Committee Letter? Are the apps in limbo until the LORs/committee letter is in?

IIRC, AMCAS will verify and process the application without the LORs. They will forward the application to the list of medical schools the applicant has supplied. However, medical schools will not review the file until everything (secondaries, LORs) have been received.

So if your son meets the general stats guidelines for the schools he applied to, he ought to receive secondaries, but his file won’t progress further until the LORs/committee letter has been recieved. (IOW, no invites until his file is complete.)

Ok…so secondaries can come in without the LORs in? Good.

Deb…what date did your D submit? Trying to get a handle on how long the verification process is. I’m guessing that the later the submission, the longer it takes AMCAS to process since they’re getting more and more submissions each day.

So…AMCAS verified today, and the secondaries came in today as well??? Is that how it goes??

she sent in the primary app June21 or 22- so it’s about a month- she was told up to 6 weeks so it was a little early. she rec’d 4 secondaries before the verification and they were not too difficult to fill out- still hasn’t done any yet though- prob this week she’ll get some out of the way- at least the easy ones

ok…silly dumb question. my son is blond. Will that hurt him during interviews? Are darker haired male students perceived to be more serious/studious? Are blond men perceived to be …uh…players/partiers/less academic?? lol…I know that sounds nutty, but if darkening his hair a bit to a light brown will help, a $10 pkg from Loreal would be worth it.

I know this sounds crazy, but I’d hate to have someone dismiss him simply because he doesn’t “look the part.”

I can tell you this, my older son (also blond) was accepted to every PhD program (STEM) he applied to. HOWEVER, after he was accepted, when the schools paid for him to visit and meet the faculty, he was inundated with comments about his appearance…seriously…“wow, we don’t get many blonds”…“Oh, you’re John Doe??? you’re so 'fresh-faced”, etc, etc." Thank goodness he didn’t have to interview BEFORE acceptance. He might not have been taken seriously.

I wonder if grad/med schools are accustomed to male applicants being dark haired, ethnic-looking, etc.

Oh…so she rec’d secondaries before verification? Is that typical?

Also…son sent his academic transcript about 2 weeks ago. The school uses a third party to electronically send them, and in the past, the process is usually VERY QUICK…like within minutes! Yet, AMCAS is still saying that they haven’t rec’d his transcript.

This time of the year, AMCAS is waaaaayyyyyy backed up. Give it a couple of days for AMCAS to do an update, then if it’s still not received have you son call AMCAS. There could be lots of possible issues–including a duplicate file. (Happens more often than you’d like to believe.)

According to SDN, some schools will send out secondaries before an applicant is verified, but it’s not typical.

(And I’d skip the hair dye. D1 had to submit a photo with many of her secondaries [so they would know who she was when she showed up for interviews]. I’d imagine it would raise more questions if the secondary photo doesn’t match the interviewee than if he just went au naturel. Is he willing to keep re-dying his hair for 9 months or more? And for the record D1’s former BF could not have been more blond–think nordic/Eastern European, white haired with matching very, very fair skin. He did get accepted to Pritzker/UChicago. Twice.)

Just a note, as far as AMCAS verification, I’ve found their facebook page helpful. They provide information about the process, answer questions and have an update on which applications they are currently reviewing. For instance, today it says they are processing apps that were complete (app, payment & transcripts) as of 6/21. Apparently this information is also available on the AMCAS log in page.

D1 didn’t receive any of her secondaries until after verification.

^^^^Good to remind everyone about the dates of submission and then corresponding dates of verification.

The farther out the submission the longer it takes. So submitting 6/21 verifying 7/24. Son submitted second day (server was jammed first day) was verified 2-3 days later. Once AMCAS gave the first batch of info to the schools then the secondaries came in. he tried to have a 2 week turn around.
