2012 Fellows in the United States and Canada - John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation

The Guggenheim Foundation has just announced its new class of Fellows.

Guggenheim Fellowships are among the most sought-after of funding programs for university faculty and individuals. They are awarded to artists, scholars of the humanities and scientists with the heaviest emphasis being in the arts and humanities. The new class of 181 Fellows was chosen from almost 3,000 applicants.

Many have the false impression that Princeton is primarily strong in the hard sciences and weaker in the arts and humanities. The Guggenheims, which are heavily directed toward the humanities and creative arts, provide evidence of the strength of those departments at Princeton.

This year, four Princeton faculty members were named Fellows:

“Four Princeton faculty members have received 2012 Guggenheim Fellowships: Eve Aschheim, senior lecturer in visual arts in the Lewis Center for the Arts; Laura Landweber, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, for the project "RNA-mediated Epigenetic Inheritance and the Origin of Genetic Systems"; Melissa Lane, professor of politics, for the project "The Rule of Knowledge: Platonic Psychology and Politics"; and Eldar Shafir, the William Stewart Tod Professor of Psychology and Public Affairs, for the project "The Context and Psychology of Scarcity."
