2012 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

@asinine

I see that there are a couple of reply’s on the gradcafe for Yale BBSB interviews from today sometime. Hopefully they didn’t send them out all in one batch as I also applied to that program.

Since I have just received my first result I think I should contribute it here.

Undergraduate: 4-year Uni in China
Major: Ecology
GPA: 3.15
Undergraduate: 1-year Honours year in Australia
Major: Biology
GPA: 1st class honours/84
Research: 1+ years of research in molecular biology, 2 publications & 1 poster(all being the second author with my supervisors being the first author)
GRE: 157/77%V 167/95%Q 4.0/48%A

Graduate Program: EEB, Molecular Biology

Prospective Graduate Schools:
Harvard
Stanford
UT-Southwestern
WUSTL (rej)
NYU
Emory
Vanderbilt
USC
Rutgers
Rochester

Well, I have a big issue that I am not sure how US school will deal with my Australian grade because it’s discrete. I have left the GPA blank in most applications where possible. The only one I converted is WUSTL(the first rej)where they ask me to convert my marks directly by multiplying 0.04… It’s not so fair since Australian system use 50 instead of 60 as the pass score. And hence it’s not easy to score high. Eg. in Usyd we get first class with 80-100, 75-80 for second upper etc…

Anyway, good luck to everyone especially for international students like me.

@eeb2012 I got an invite from UChicago, Molecular Biosciences cluster on Dec 17. I think I posted it on the gradcafe results survey, I don’t remember… Anyhow, the interview weekend is Feb 16-18.

Has anyone else gotten like 5 e-mails from Duke about their application status? It’s starting to get annoying, I get the picture already… All of my application materials have been received. I don’t need to be told this 5 times.

I need some advice. I am applying a tad short notice to two programs at Oxford and the deadline is tomorrow, I notified my letter writers a week before winter break. The applications are submitted however one of my recommenders, a former PI, has lost contact and I can’t seem to get in touch with her, she has submitted to other schools already though. I have a postdoc that I have worked closely with in my current lab that may write a letter on short notice for me. I don’t think it is ideal but should I go with the postdoc? any other ideas?

@AliG89 - evidently its just a automated thing that Duke does because of their package with the software company. can’t stop it.

has anyone heard from:

stanford biosciences
ucsf biophysics
scripps
cornell weill
cornell tri institute

??

@seniorspring-I heard from Cornell Weill IMP program on 12/22/11.

@nrds35, when is your interview date for the IMP program?

@langerhans-feb 22-24

Just got invited to Cornell BMCB interview date is March 1-4. First invite too! Anyone know percentage of acceptance after interview?

@seniorspring, I know a friend who has an invite from Weill Cornell Pharm, but I have not heard anything from the Allied program.

@fender2593, I would ask your postdoc to write a letter as a safety and still register your other PI as a letter writer (assuming this is an electronic system like most schools?) if you can have more than the minimum number of LORs. Worst case scenario, your PI doesn’t to you and you still have the minimum number of LORs. Best case scenario, your PI submits the letter on time or early enough past the deadline that it’s still accepted and you have more than the minimum number of letters. That’s just what I would do though, since I find most schools will take LORs past the deadline.

@bingbang Congrats! Is it Ithaca campus or Weill Cornell? You should check the gradcafe results to see if people commonly get rejected post interview, although those results surveys won’t give you an idea of the percent. It’ll only give you a sense of whether it’s rare or not.

@greenertea Thanks for the advice! I ended up doing something like that and my postdoc wrote a wonderful letter just today despite a long day cryosectioning. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to register more than the required three so I submitted the postdoc’s. Oxford seemed to be quite strict about not accepting late LORs in their correspondance so I went with the safer bet. If my old PI finally returns my emails/calls we can work it out then. Already got an interview at Tufts sackler for MERGE-ID so I’m not too worried about it.

NYU Sackler Interview – 3/1-3/2

@StemCell7 What track?

@geenertea I applied to the Ithaca campus. 12-18 students usually enroll year each (from their website), so I am guessing they invited between 20-25. So excited! Didn’t expect to hear back this soon from any school.

Weird thing is, one of my LOR was 3 weeks late because they forgot to submit it on accident. I thought I was doomed.

Stem Cell Track

U Minnesota MICaB program - via email just now. Feb 9-12 or 16-19.

Does anyone know the interview dates for the University of Pittsburgh IBGP? I’m trying to plan my UNC-CH interview dates around Pitt and also NYU (if I am offered).

Is 3/1 - 3/2 the only interview weekend for NYU?
