2012 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

just got an invite from caltech biochem and molecular biophysics via email

@Extension UCSD BMS is doing at least some calls today. I just got a call from them this morning.

Interview at NIH/Karolinska. Waiting on NIH/OxCam

UCSF CCB Rejection. Awesome

@compbio: do you know if or when the CAMB second weekend is?

@isobelarcher: Yes, I got a BU invite this week by phone. They may be doing them one at a time rather than in the large batches we see from other schools. The interview is also basically one day (and an informal evening before which sounded optional if you couldn’t make). So perhaps they’re actually having more individual interview days instead of just 1-2 weekends?

Second CAMB weekend: February 2-5, Third Weekend: 23-26

Anyone have any news about Rockefeller? Are they still sending out acceptances?

@plsbenicetoppl,they were totally just kidding about the 1 person invite: it was sardonic humor. It is obvious it was a joke because multiple people on this thread have put that they got Stanford Interviews. That would not make logical sense to believe that only 1 person is invited. However, if English is not someone’s first language, I guess it could be confusing as to whether they were joking or not, but still, not only one person on this thread got an interview. Just saying to defend their joke, not to start an argument. I actually thought it was funny.

If you follow the post close enough, they’re talking about Stanford Biosciences Genetics…

@musttryharder, I contacted them yesterday and they told me that they are still reviewing applications. Final decisions will be made by February 15. So I guess it can go either way until mid Feb.

@NeuroIM4: Thanks for the info! Frustrated to have to wait longer, but that’s life! Did you specify neuro as your top interest (I did).

@musttryharder:

my friends worked at Rockefeller, and they actually have interviews for internal applicants who worked there these couple weeks. I guess it would take them awhile to finalize the decision. Good Luck.

The programs that trickle invitations instead of sending them in waves seem like they may be in danger of lowering their yields…

If I get more than one acceptance before I hear back from the trickle-programs I applied to (both of which drag out the process into mid-March), I think I might be put in a tight spot in terms of final decisions. Since I love all of the schools equally at this point, I don’t want to miss out on any potential interviews.

Edit: Rockefeller doesn’t worry about yields, so I imagine they’ll take forever to “finish”…

For competitive programs like UCSF, Stanford, etc., what are the usual chances of being accepted after an interview? I feel like people who usually get invited to these interviews are always very well matched for the program as it is…I don’t understand how they reject people after the interviews.

just got an email about the IGP program at northwestern? they finally gave me my application id, which lets me check in and see my status - which is weird, bc my app should’ve been complete for a while now. but anyway, the status reads: “Interview invitations are finalized by February 15. Admission decisions for domestic applicants are complete by March 15. Admission decisions for international applicants are complete by April 15.”

I’m sure it’s not difficult to believe that it’s easier to sound knowledgeable and seem likeable on paper.

@kryptonsa36-- Yeah, I guess that makes sense. So basically if you get rejected after your interview, it’s because of how you interviewed that you got rejected more than the rest of your application, right?

Sorry, I’m just prepping for my interviews and I’m psyching myself out.

parents house (~10 miles from palo alto) received the large Stanford envelope today lol

I have a question for everyone. Is it crazy to apply for and participate in a summer research program the summer before entering grad school?

@gradschoolVA It is not crazy to do a summer internship but there is also no need to do it. you will do rotations in three labs and choose one for your thesis research anyway. i would recommend you to read tons of papers from the professors you want to work with and HAVE FUN in the summer!!
