2012 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

@neurogirl4, greenertea: Yeah he said to wait a week and email him again if it didn’t change. I just thought it was odd that it basically says “received, complete, received, received. Overall application status: incomplete” Oh, well. It will probably be fine. At least I’m not the only one!

apps submitted so i might as well add my info (and stop lurking)

applying to:
Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCSD, UCSF, scripps-CA, MIT, Harvard (BBS), Tufts, BU

Thanks for the heads up on UPenn. My app said incomplete as of this morning, but it said it was missing a transcript and something else as well. I emailed, and though I haven’t gotten an email back yet, the problem has been fixed. :)

@greengenes

What type of programs are you applying to?

^genetics program where possible otherwise umbrella biology programs

@Biochem…Maybe it means that all the smart people are doing something smart, like going to med school/law school. This way after they invest just 4 short years they can have a very stabe career and makes losts of $$$. Where us lab rats will be investing 10 years with postdocs, and make less than what i make currently with a BS! :-)

Is anyone else applying to computational/theoretical neuroscience programs?

when 2% of us become tenured professors at prestigious universities, everything will pay off.

I’m applying to Neuroscience programs, but my interest is in neuroimmunology and neurodegeneration. I’ve only seen a couple of neuroscience people on here and none to the programs I applied to (UCSD, UCSF, UCBerkeley). Somehow I doubt that means there aren’t a thousand apps at each. I’m already checking this site twice a day. Two of those apps went from “submitted” status to “under review” status, but other than that just lots of waiting and trying not to think about it…

I’m also applying to Neuroscience programs, but focusing on higher cognition via neuroimaging. So far so no word from any of my 11 programs… oh, except for this morning when I got an email from the “The Graduate Program in…”. After my heart skipped a few beats and I sat down to open it, it turned out to be a generic “Happy Holidays” email from the school. Nice thought and everything, I guess I am just way too excited about the prospect of hearing any decision from these schools.

It’s so hard not to think about it, though, knowing that at least a few Neuro people on this and thegradcafe forum have already been invited for interviews at one of the schools I applied to (Northwestern). Based on the dates of interview invites in previous years, most Neuro news should come throughout January, but there always are those outliers. A sincere congratulations to those exceptional applicants who are hearing early! :)

I’m applying to neuroscience programs as well (Emory, Michigan, Yale). I just received my phone call this morning for my interview at Michigan. I applied directly to the program (not through the Program in Biomedical Science), so I’m not sure when they start making decisions. I have yet to hear back from Emory or Yale, but Emory should be starting to make phone calls between December 16-23.

Oh, and as people are probably curious:

Undergraduate Institution: Michigan
Undergraduate GPA: 3.04
Graduate (Masters) GPA: 3.65
GRE: 156V/160Q/4.5W
Publications: 3 first-author (published), 1 third-author (accepted), and two second-author (one submitted and one in preparation)
Conference abstracts: 9 (6 as first-author)
Research experience: Five years, including three different laboratories and one independent collaboration

I don’t remember if this was posted already but people might be interested in this. You can look up when all the different programs sent out invites/acceptances/rejections in previous years and see current ones as they come in:

Use with caution… it might drive you crazy…

are those people who posted their interview results on Gradcafe supermen or overachievers some kind? Some of them posted their stats and I just feel like I’m a third world kid compared to them :(…

i think it’s safe to say that everyone* on these forums are in the top 5-10%

*not including me. :)

it looks like top 1-5%, not 5-10% to me :(. seems like all the best people are applying for grad school and little chance for an average joe like me.

but I was kinda surprised that one person just got interview from UCSF Tetrad with an OK stat. so it’s not really hopeless yet.

Is the Columbia application status website (https://admissions.columbia.edu) working for anyone? I never received an email containing an application ID but I tried using the number on the ApplyYourself website. Didn’t work.

OMG did other people get invites from UCSF TETRAD??? Those never go out til like January! Freaking outtttt.

Seeing someone say they got a Tetrad invitation is freaking me out too…I’m going back and forth between nervously refreshing my email and wondering if that post was real or not. Haha. I am going a little crazy.

Me too. I called, but I think the office was already closed for the day :(. I will call in the morningg.

I haven’t gotten my Columbia applicant ID yet either (I submitted my application on the 4th). Do you remember if there was anything during the application process that said when we should receive it? I can’t recall…
