2013-2014 Applicants and their parents.....

As you all know, I read this forum so I can help my nephew when his time comes.

Huge congrats to all with such good news. It seems like the kids on CC are doing much better than the national average when it comes to getting in.

Congratulations to phillipb22 on his acceptance and WayOutWestMom’s daughter on her new interviews.

My son, just now got his CCLCM and Case interviews. They are his 15th and 16th interviews of the cycle. Even though he is fast approaching eleveneleven territory here (:D), there is no way he can say no to CCLCM interview. It’s essentially an opportunity for free medical education! He is coming home tomorrow for his Cornell and NYU interviews.

Speaking off eleveneleven, he has 5 acceptances now, including UMich, UVA and UC-Irvine. The guy is bound to break the record for acceptances.

Good job Kal’s son, to be crowned eleveneleven junior if he gets more interviews!

So how many interviews has the senior had?

Congrats phillipb22.

^
35 Applications
22 interview invites
17 interviews completed
5 interviews rejected
5 Acceptances
2 Pre-interview Rejections
2 Did not submit secondary
9 Still waiting to hear from

WOW!

Congrats to everybody. A bit of comment in regard to
“to CCLCM interview. It’s essentially an opportunity for free medical education!”
-yes, it is free on a surface. However, it is 5 years program, not 4, so they are loosing the whole year of MD salary, not exactly free. Best wishes for your S! Mine said that CCLCM program did not fit her very well. She was put on hold and withdrew. But one of her classmates from UG choose to attend there (he was not accepted at Case). It is strange how it works out. It looks as though CCLCM is lloking harder at other things besides stats.

Lately, many seem to be taking the route of doing something during an extra year. Someone told me about a kid from Baylor who scored 270+ and took an year off. This was an year ago.

kal,
Unbelievable list in post 1084. For comparison, my D.
8 appied
1 rejected pre-interview
1 ignored her application, never heard a peep from them
2 hold/waitlisted, withdrew from both, did not wait for final decision, said did not fit into these programs
4 acceptances (1 was before applying - guaranteed spot in bs/md)

BTW, another friend of hers who was origianlly on hold at CCLCM eventually got accepted and choose to attend there.

D. has applied strictly within driving distance from home.

Why somebody who scored 270+ took an year off beats me. To make the application even stronger? There are not that many people out there with 270+. Must be some specail considerations. Sometime there is something else going on in people’s lives that forces them to take a year off.

Talking about 270 score, this is the average score of one med school:

[CWRU School of Medicine | Office of Admissions](http://casemed.case.edu/admissions/profile.cfm)

Getting more OOS students (especially those from California) appeears to help boost the school’s average score. Those med schools which focus on recruiting IS students due to their state’s mandate or due to their mission (i.e., more concerned about med school’s “responsibility” to the society or community?) generally do not do as well on this kind of test (udub, ucsf) But “teaching to the test” (some florida school?) or giving the students more support (e.g., in terms of allocated time for study for the test) could help also (BCM?)

"To make the application even stronger? There are not that many people out there with 270+. "

Interestingly enough, the specialization has one of the lowest requirements and so he did not need anything to go there whatsoever.

It has become common for people to stretch the MD because they want to do other things while they are still there. Once you start residency, you don’t want to get an MPH or MBA.

MCAT2 - I have heard UTSW and UT-Houston have very similar averages for Step 1 although the MCAT score averages differ by 3 or 4 points.

mcat2,
Where did you see 270 being average for CWRU. From your link:
"Our school’s average for the most recent three years is Mean (StdDev) = 230 (21) compared to the national average of 221 (23).
I only saw 230 and not 270.

That list belongs to eleveneleven, arguably one of the most successful applicants in this cycle, thus far.

My son’s numbers as of today:

27 applications
1 pre-interview hold
10 still under review
16 interviews offered and accepted
5 interviews completed
1 post-interview deferral
1 acceptance

D’s numbers (which point out to future applicants why applying broadly is so important)

29 applications
5 completed interviews
4 interviews yet to be done
2 post-secondary rejections (oddly they are lower tier schools)
0 post-interview rejections
2 acceptances
1 (will hear the news tomorrow)
2 schools where she interviewed are non-rolling, won’t hear for months

18 post secondary dead silence.

The moral of the story is that 29 is not too many applications.

Just a probably naive questiion–

do you think that there is a fairly large cluster of several applicants who get multiple acceptances (like those here in our CC family) and then a great number get just one acceptance, and then half get none?

DD’s numbers so far

16 applications
1 rejection post secondary
5 interviews completed(2 non rolling so wont know until next year)
4 interviews to go (including home state schools)
6 schools still under review
1 acceptance

Waiting is the hardest part.

Boysx3: I think the stats are that roughly 40% of all applicants get in somewhere. How many get multiple acceptances? I’ve never seen stats on that.

I still shake my head over the seeming randomness of the process. Schools we thought would invite D to interview, silence. Schools we thought were reaches, interview!

Note to applicants----check your voice mail. At least occasionally.

D2 just called to tell me she just checked her voicemail from LAST WEEK. And there was message congratulating her on being accepted to med school.

Sheesh, kid, way to give your mom [even more] gray hair……

congrrats to your D, wowm!

Congrats wowmom! Two doctors in the family!

Congratulations to WayOutWestMom’s daughter!

It looks like there are only two applicants who have been active here in this cycle still waiting - jc40’s kid and plumazul. Plumazul’s wait is because she only applied to MSTPs. Once we hear the good news from jc40, it would be 100% success rate. We want nothing less.
