2013 Bioscience Admission and Interviews

@molliebatmit I’m going for Biological Sciences in Public Health at Harvard; do you know whether or not that one tries to accept everyone it interviews, like BBS? Because that would be awesome.

Harvard MCB 1st or 2nd week doesn’t matter. I was originally 1st week and switched and got in. Good luck!

Stanford Biology and Stanford Cancer Biology adcoms have met and made decisions. Invites should be coming this week. Good luck all.

@trekker02 Congrats! I received an invite from UW pathobio too! See you there!

Congrats to trekker02 and Chimmm.
Maybe it was out of reach for me. I applied UW pbio, too. Haven’t received any e-mail.

@ BioPhysANDchem: I had started the application a long time back but didn’t finish it before the deadline; I just couldn’t find a nice research fit for myself in the Dept of Biology. On afterthought though I think I should have applied; received a rejection from WashU (a place I thought I had a shot at :()

No, I don’t know anything about the BSPH admissions process.

Well, or people who look good on paper, but aren’t similarly awesome in person. People always say that the only applicants who get cut post-interview (everywhere, not just at BBS) are the crazy ones who eat kittens, or whatever. But people do get cut everywhere, and it’s not generally because anybody thought there was something seriously wrong with them – it happens if there’s a mismatch on some level between your application and your in-person presentation.

The year I applied, I got in everywhere I had interviews, except UCSF Tetrad. I didn’t have a good interview weekend at Tetrad, and it was pretty clear that I had applied to the wrong program – I should have applied to BMS or Neuroscience. So I wasn’t a good fit for the program, and the program realized that once they saw me in person, and I understand why they didn’t offer me a spot.

yay interview at UMinnesota immunology! So happy considering the WashU St Louis rejection and unofficial rejection from Yale (there was a post about all interviews being sent out, which I confirmed by phone this morning). Nice boost in energy! :)

hontoOishi, this is great news! Congratulations! The U of M is a great school and Minneapolis/St. Paul is vibrant and urban. The Yale thing is super-weird, though, because I haven’t heard a word from them. Seeing as how all the invites have been sent out, why have the “It’s not you, it’s us, but, really, it’s you” e-mails not been sent out yet? I am still weirdly hopeful…

@th2Cell

I dont’t want to be the bearer of bad news, but I would want to know. My bf who is enrolled at Yale immuno met with the admissions committee today to discuss the interview weekend. They have sent out all invites and only invited 16 people this year, with the intent of only taking half of that. Seems like it was a tough year at Yale.

I still haven gotten a rejection from their MMPP program, but im also pretty sure they are done sending out invites too…

Yeah, I really wish schools would quickly tell us no. Then we don’t need to worry about conficting interview weekends, etc. The person on the phone at Yale said “the decisions should be entered into the system” but I’m not sure what that means. I checked the online application yesterday and didn’t see rejection as the status yet. I learned it always helps to just call the schools! (thought I’m sure they probably hate that :slight_smile: )

Yeah, Fishscience101, I know exactly what you mean. Closure is vital and, at some intrinsic level, I knew that Yale and I, well…my undergrad minor in Wishful Thinking was getting in the way…Ah, well. There are other places yet! :)

I finally broke down and called Duke, hontoOishi and I am glad I did. They told me to wait till early February, so I can somewhat stop obsessing about this!

@Fishscience101
Yeah, yesterday I just called yale and the woman answered the phone told me directly the immunology track had sent out all the invites. And I have not got the rejection yet.

I felt yale was ridiculous and they never responded my emails. I am an international student with biochemitsry background, which they might not think as attractive as others for the immunology program. But I think they should as least respond some of my emails= =.

@ Th2Cell Thanks for taking the initiative to call! :slight_smile: I’m glad to know I shouldn’t be expecting an email until another few weeks. I always feel kind of guilty about calling them but a stressed out applicant has to do what a stressed out applicant has to do.

Has anyone applied to Yale microbiology take the gut to call them yet?

I called GSK yesterday and the woman said applications were still in review! just to give a little bit of hope to those who’ve been nervous about GSK admission (like me). :)

Apparently only a few Stanford Biosciences programs send out email invitations. Most send out an interview packet through snail mail! I called the program and they told me that onyl a few invitations had been sent out so far, but that there were a host of packages that were going to go out tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

@chickenholic1
Isn’t GSK’s interview weekend next week?

I also called Stanford, they told me that packet of invitations will be released by tomorrow until the second week of February. So don’t need to be too worried.

@princebear
ugh thanks for letting me know! I’ve been relieved by the woman’s remark but considering that the interview is in next week it’s so frustrating. I hope they might host unofficial interviews in the following weeks?
