for interview weekends, if i have the option to stay with a student or at a hotel, would it look bad or anti-social if i choose the second one?

@princebear…what school is this for? I would much rather a hotel but I agree it might look antisocial if you pick that…I’d ask your contact person what most other interviewees pick and then go from there…staying with a student would be a good way to make a friend before actually attending the school but it could also hurt you if you don’t get along with the student you are staying with. That’s really weird.

I know Harvard BBS and MIT Biology give that choice

@bassish101
and which one did you choose?

Hi guys! I’ve been following this thread for a little while now, so thought I’d finally join in. :)

I only applied to 4 schools, which seems like a really small number compared to most of you. I just ran out of time before the deadlines. My interest is cancer biology. I’ve had one summer fellowship, and a year of research, both cancer related. My major is biochemistry and my GPA is average (3.5 overall, 3.7 major). GRE: 80 percentile in verbal, 81 percentile in quantitative, 4.5 analytical writing.

I applied to Emory, Vanderbilt, Northwestern and USF.
I haven’t heard anything from any of them yet! Getting nervous.

For those of you who have called/emailed the schools… what did you say? Do you think this is a good idea in general or that the admissions committee would find it annoying?

@princebear: I chose to stay at a student’s home. I figured it would look better, it would be a good opportunity to make a connection with someone in the program, and I could see how the housing situation is for grad students. What are you thinking of doing?

For anyone who is concerned, I called UCLA ACCESS, they said they are still in the processing of reviewing applications. Anyone hard from the biochemistry track at stanford biosciences?

Invited to interview by UVA Neuroscience
Rejected by Duke Neurobiology

@bassish101…i haven’t decided yet but probably student housing too…it’s only a weekend

GSK rejection email. As if I didn’t already figure that after no interview invite in December :-p

Ucsd neuro invites went out today

@ piano5115 Exactly. Its especially annoying because they don’t really understand how competitive it actually is to get into these schools. But I guess its good to try to ignore what they think and to think more about what we think and want.

An update from schools I got from calling:

MIT Biol Eng: invites will be sent late Jan/early Feb (I was kind of worried because 3 people on grad cafe posted that they received interview invites early Jan)

UChicago Immunology: We should know by the end of next week

Harvard Div of Med Sci-Immunol: All interview invites have been sent out

@mathandbrains did you get an interview invite from Stanford or UCSD yet?

Dude/Gurrrl! HontoOishi! You’re the best! Thanks for placing the UChicago call. I was going to do it myself, today, but couldn’t muster up the nerve. Thanks!

@Nerdy4neurons–Yes on ucsd no on Stanford, but Stanford invites have been sent out…not sure if they do all at one time or not. Not expecting one from them though…I don’t think comp/theoretical neuro is huge there, but I could be wrong

@mathandbrains congratulations on the UCSD interview!! UCSD has been my dream school for years; I know more about their neuroscience program and faculty than any of the others I applied to. Unfortunately, I did not hear from them today. This whole process is quite a rollercoaster of emotion!

No. Honestly, nobody’s analyzing your choices like that – do whatever you feel most comfortable with. It can be fun and useful to stay with a student for the reasons everyone’s listed, but if you would prefer the hotel, ask to stay at the hotel.

@nerdy4neurons–they were in my top 2! And don’t lose hope, you never know!

does anyone know if stanford neuroscience is done sending out invites?

Sent Northwestern DGP an updated list of my publications, got this in response: “However, we are in fact nearly done with our invitations. At this point, it is unlikely that we will be able to extend an interview invitation to you. An official email notification will be going out in the next couple of weeks.”

Lovely. That’s now 5 rejections out of 11; not a way to start the new year.
