2013 Bioscience Admission and Interviews

@bassish101
You went to the bbs interview this past weekend, right? Do you by any chance know when we will hear back from them? Thanks.

@princebear: I heard a range of answers to that question, from hearing this week to hearing at the end of the month… On gradcafe, it seems that last year some people were notified as early as the Wednesday after the first interview weekend. I’m hoping we hear soon, though, because I hate the suspense… Did you get any details?

@bassish101
I got many different answers too. I’m just hoping to hear back before its next interview weekend.

Has anyone heard back from Weill Cornell or NYU? (for PhD in Neuroscience or biological sciences) I called them up and NYU says I should hear back this week and Weill Cornell keeps telling me different things.

As for my past schools: Got rejected from Mount Sinai and Rockefeller Medical :frowning: Still hopeful for the others though!

One of my schools asked me to send them a list of professors that I would like to meet during the interview. Do you think it is a good idea to add a professor that I know is in the admissions committee? If I do well during our interview, it would probably help me a great deal to receive an acceptance, but it might be a little risky, isn’t? This professor’s research is interesting to me, and I am knowledgeable in his subject, but I could just as well choose other professors with similar interests who are probably not in the admissions committee… any thoughts?

Interview from UPenn CAMB for February 14-16th. I have an interview at Cornell Weill on the 13th and 14th, as well as at Columbia on the 15th. Tough decisions.

I would suggest Penn CAMB honestly. Its an amazing program and the faculty are by far the friendliest and the students the most outgoing out of all the schools I have visited. Also my friend got accepted to Harvard BBS today.

@glacialis
Do you know how your friend was contacted by Harvard bbs?

No, but Ill ask!

Hey guys, what is the news with BME graduate admissions?

Got the acceptance to Harvard BBS by phone call (no e-mail yet) at 5:20 p.m. ET

@zambo9: Congratulations! Who contacted you (i.e. someone you interviewed with or an adcom member or an administrative person)? I’m hoping I get a call soon, too!

Any professor with whom you interview will generally be asked to write a report on you to the admissions committee, so it doesn’t really make a difference whether you interview with someone on the committee or not.

@bassish101 It was one of the faculty with whom I interviewed. I think she might be on the admissions committee, but I’m not sure.

ok thanks!

Thank you, Mollie, for clearing up the process for me. I have been to one interview so far where I met individually with five faculties. They all did most of the talking… and none of them were part of the admissions committee so I got quite confused about what they base their decision on of admitting or rejecting an applicant.

Do you know what criteria they use to evaluate us during the interview? I was told by the grad students during my interview to “not be a ****** or a psycho”… but there must be something more… we were 35 interviewees and only half of us would get extended an offer. None of us looked like ******s or psychos… so I am really confused as to how the process works. Being rejected post-interview must be a terrible thing…

Typically they will ask you to talk about yourself, your past research, your future goals, your current interests, why you are interested in the program, etc. Not necessarily all of those things. Based on how you answer, they will try to assess how successful you will be and how well you fit their program. If they didn’t give you the opportunity to talk about these things, then that is pretty unusual.

More than not looking like a psycho, you want to actively look like you will be a good graduate student in the program and a good use of the program’s limited resources.

I was rejected from Vanderbilt yesterday, but I was also invited to interview for Emory’s Cancer Biology program! I’m so excited! I know they are only planning to admit 4 people this year.

Only applying to 4 places has been so stressful, but really I can’t imagine going anywhere other than my top 4. I would rather reapply next year than go to a “safe” school just because I can, and then not be really happy there.

It almost doesn’t even feel real that I’ve been invited to interview at 2/4. :o When I talked to the director yesterday, it already felt like I knew him. I’m so excited to meet some more of the faculty there. It’s funny how after getting my first invite, I was so anxious/nervous about the interviews. Then I get the invite from Emory, and I’m not anxious, I’m excited! I can’t wait. And it makes me less nervous about the interviews at the other school, because I know I will have Emory the next weekend.

Ahh I’m so excited! I just had to share. I feel so much better about things now, even though I know nothing is definite. :)

Congrats to those of you who received Harvard acceptances yesterday! How exciting!
