@BAFapoptosis where else would I go thats not medicine or science

Here is another recent article: They seem to be popping up everywhere.

[The Ph.D. Bust, Pt. II: How Bad Is the Job Market for Young American-Born Scientists? - Jordan Weissmann - The Atlantic](<a href=“The Ph.D. Bust, Pt. II: How Bad Is the Job Market for Young American-Born Scientists? - The Atlantic”>The Ph.D. Bust, Pt. II: How Bad Is the Job Market for Young American-Born Scientists? - The Atlantic)

“It feels like almost every day I read another article or blog post about how screwed biology PhDs currently are in terms of the job market. Whether its the Washington Post or the Atlantic Monthly or many other news outlets, the prospects don’t look too good in academia for biology PhDs.”

Maybe these posts should be in their own thread?

@rabbitstew: I agree. While these are certainly valid arguments and good points, the continual stream of these comments is starting to make me a little uncomfortable. I’m anxious enough as it is! :P

I also agree. BAFapoptosis’ posts are adding way too much negativity to this thread. We already know that the job market is horrible.

I agree. BAF, you were the victim of bad timing more than anything else. This is the absolute worst time in all of our lifetimes to be in the market for ANY job. What is a good field to go into right now? Engineering is bad. Law is beyond abysmal. Medicine is a safer choice but is still in flux. Should we all just go into finance and economic consulting? That’s just about the only field that is hiring, from what I gather.

Sure science funding is in the dumps right now, but who is to say what it will be like in 10 years (PhD + Post Doc duration)? No need to fill the whole thread with tales of sour grapes.

You guys are right, I am being a ■■■■■.
Good luck!

Guys science is a great field right now. Academic jobs will always be hard to come by but industry is hiring like crazy. There does exist science outside of academia you know…

@Merohedral

ahhh did they mention if decisions are rolling or sent out all at once?? I really love NY…

Well, I’m waitlisted for UW-Pathobiology and they say they don’t think they’ll get to me. Assuming it ends up with a rejection, that’s 1/3 post-interview. Still holding out for this program, though. I hate leaving UC Davis waiting for my response, especially if someone else really wants into that program, but Washington’s been my #1 choice for a while now.

@feeshk

i think they might send them all out on Friday…

Well, I had 3 interviews in February… It’s still mid-march and almost waiting on 5 weeks for ANY response from 1 interview, 4 weeks for another, and going on the 3rd week for my last. It looks like I may be joining some of you for the next round!

It looks like these places have sent out some acceptances scattered throughout the past few weeks. I haven’t heard a peep out of any of them.

@feeshk:

I think they’ll all be sent out at once. We were the only group interviewing… They invited 47 of us for 18-20 spots. They’ll probably send out ~25 offers… so our chances are a bit better than 50/50.

@mill37

fingers crossed!!!did you go to open house?

@Merohedral

oh wow then i think chances are less than 50/50 because i think they interviewed most international students on skype

@feeshk:

Oh… I did not think of that
However, some international students came all the way to New York City for the interview, so they were part of the 47. I can think of at least two applicants who came straight from China for the interview. So maybe there were no Skype interviews? Who knows…

@Merohedral

oh cos I am international (but I am living in cali now) and they interviewed me on skype, which is kinda weird because i thought in my case schools would invite me for on campus interviews instead :/

@feeshk:

It’s pretty strange that they didn’t invite you on campus. But if I remember correctly, some of the international students that I met came by their own means.

@Merohedral

that is some dedication right there, probably cost them a lot of money plus they have to deal with the time difference/jetlag…

was it still freezing in NY? I was there in feb, almost got trapped there cos of the storm

It was cold. During the day, we had temperatures in the 50s, but at night it would fall in the 30s, with strong winds.
