2013 Bioscience Admission and Interviews

@Merohedral, @feeshk
I just got an admission letter from Columbia Biosciences. I was at the open house, but wasn’t really expecting it. Good luck!

@SpinEcho

Congrats!! i am just hoping for the best but expecting the worst now

and good luck Merohedral we both need it :)

@feeshk

I did! I’m one of the two internationals but I went from Canada =)

I just got the admit letter too! OMG so thrilled!!! Totally didn’t expect it coming!!

GOOD LUCK GUYS!!!

I got an unofficial admit too!
mill37, I think I know who you are :slight_smile:
Congratulations, looking forward to seeing you again.

@Merohedral @mill37

yay i got the admit letter too!!! so excited!!! i guess i will see yall in the fall :)

@feeshk
Congrats!!
When did you receive it? One day after us?

People who have been accepted to UCLA ACCESS, have you received an email from the UCLA Graduate Division yet? I received the unofficial acceptance from the program 3 weeks ago, but I’m still waiting for the official email.

MIT Biology acceptance today via email. :)

Out of curiosity are there any current Berkeley MCB students or perspective students?

Didn’t realize this was the correct forum for this :

Just want to get a quick poll of people’s opinions…yes it is one of those posts where the someone puts up their stats to gauge admissibility to the top PhD programs in molecular biology.

Here they are:
Carleton College. Biology Major, Biochemistry concentration 3.65 GPA.
GRE: 165Q(92%ile)/165V(95%ile) AW: 5.0(92%ile)
-summer after sophomore year stint in history of medical ethics research (not science but related to genetics)
-Research experience in undergrad lab Junior&Senior year, as well as intervening summer full time, developmental genetics in model organism. 2nd author manuscript in preparation. Presented poster at international meeting.
-Took two years off to work in molecular genomics/epigenetics with the same model organism in the lab of a well known researcher at Cambridge University, UK. Some computational experience.
-Stellar letters of recommendation (perhaps strongest part of application)x4 (three professors in college, 1 from current research mentor).

Worry points:
-never took physics during undergrad. not a requirement, but mentioned by many program websites.
-freshman year GPA (3.3) and a ‘B-’ in multivariable calculus during first term.
-how valuable will taking the subject GRE be for me? how well would i need to do for it to enhance my application?

JHU BME acceptance via email. Funding information is complex, 50% tuition waiver with TA position, and have to find a supervisor for further funding like rest 50% of tuition fee and stipend as stated in the email. I couldn’t understand the language well.

The email was three days ago, and nothing else since then. I sent an email to a prof. asking a position in his lab, but no response yet.

Gave up my hope after being rejected from MIT, Minnesota, Wisconsin and UT Austin. However, I don’t know if I could join at JHU, the dream school for BME, due to esoteric funding issues :-(

Hello all,

Here is my story:
international student
GPA undergraduate 3.98/ GPA master’s 4.00;
research experience: more than 6 years;
one first author publication; 3 posters; 3 oral presentations at international conferences; Marie Curie fellowship
I have not taken the GRE test yet, but do you think that I have any chance to get in a graduate program (I am interested in Immunology) in some of the good US universities??

UC Davis - Microbiology
UC Denver - Anschutz Medical Campus - Biomedical Sciences Program

Rejected - Harvard, UW Microbiology
Interviewed - UC Davis, UC Denver, UW Pathobiology
Rejected after interview - UC Denver, UW Pathobiology
Accepted - UC Davis

So looks like I’ll be going to UC Davis in the fall! No real regrets about the whole process, and knowing I’m going somewhere is a huge relief. As a former college drop-out, it feels like I finally got my life turned around, and that’s pretty cool.
