Still waiting,!!! ah
Major: Psychology B.A.
GPA: 3.597
Transfer: CSUS > UCSD/UCD (junior)
Pre-req: about 2/3 done
Gender: male

You know I wonder, On my application because I am mixed, I put that i have 3 different ethnicities, does that affect anything in a negative way? I have been concerned and wanted to know if I should have just put one.

also because i am a junior transfer from a CSUS, I didn’t apply for a CAL grant because i thought I wouldn’t get it based of those circumstances, is this true? if not what should i do now; I mean at this point i haven’t even heard from anyone yet to truly commit to figuring this thing out.

Your ethnicity has absolutely no effect, positive or negative, in the admission process. As a California public university it’s actually illegal for them to give you any sort of admission preference based on your ethnicity. Also, if you felt uncomfortable with it you could option to decline from stating. The reason there’s an ethnicity section is for demographic purposes and scholarship consideration it has nothing to do with the admission decision.

You probably should have applied for a Cal Grant, I don’t see why coming from a CSU would make a difference. Although, I don’t have much to base that off of. You probably should’ve contacted a UCSD financial aid counselor to get clarification on that before the March 2 deadline.

Ethnicity won’t affect you negatively, but couldn’t it affect you positively? For example, if you are a minority and competitive in your major, couldn’t it give you a bit of an edge? They do want diversity in their school right?
I am just wondering because I am unsure as well. I am a female Hispanic engineering student, so I am definitely a minority. I am not counting on this to help me, but a lot of people have told me it will. I am not sure how true it is though?

Ethnicity may benefit only if you’re an URM, which you are identified by selecting your ethnicity/race on the application. Otherwise, ethnicity is not considered.

Again, it’s illegal in California to give preferential admission consideration on the basis of race, ethnicity, or gender in public institutions as instituted by Proposition 209 in 1996. I’m a minority STEM major as well and there are programs out there specifically to help minority students at the UCs. However, just in terms of admission it’s literally amended into the state constitution that the UCs can not admit preferentially solely on the basis of race, ethnicity, or gender.

Now if in your personal statement you talked about being a minority and how that proposed barriers for you that you felt like you had to overcome, I’m sure that’s something that would positively effect your admission chances. But just checking that you’re a certain race, ethnicity, or gender on the UC app in it of itself would have no effect on your chances to a public California university. It likely would at many private schools, but not amongst the UCs or CSUs. There are no diversity quotas or anything and after proposition 209 was passed there were marked effects on the demographics at the UCs.

I see. That does make sense. I decided to look this up since we are on the topic. I guess it could possibly help me for admission to USC since its private, but not for UCs. I did talk about being a female engineering student a bit in my essay, but I doubt it will help much if at all. Thanks for the information it was very helpful.

@aztecstudent I could be wrong but I don’t think any schools post new decisions up during the weekend… So we won’t see the anything until tomorrow.

According to many people and from last year thread, I wouldn’t count on seeing decisions from now until end of April. But what is stopping us right? I’m still gonna check everyday with the expectation that a decision on my application will be around end of April.
