How is Long Beach, Chico, or Fullerton ranked above Cal Poly Pomona?

I know several graduates from all three schools and they’re not what I’d consider particularly smart. Is it their liberal arts programs? Location?

It seems like Cal Poly Pomona is pretty stagnant in the rankings. I know several years ago they were ranked 7th (2005 I think) and then took a major nose dive to their current place and haven’t really moved since. I think it was due to some bad faculty (which they got rid of thankfully I think in 08-09). There’s been a lot of good thins happening for Cal Poly Pomona. I think they need to do more research.

I only know of New Mexico Tech and Abilene Christian University because I know people who personally go there. Kind of surprises me to see they’re up that high, tho.

Fortunately for Cal Poly Pomona its college of engineering is still highly ranked. It ranks ahead of universities like the extremely selective Swarthmore College; privates like Loyola Marymount, University of San Diego, TCU, University of the Pacific; and public flagships like Miami University. It’s the #2 best CSU in this ranking and it is, without a doubt, the flagship college of Cal Poly Pomona.

They only do top 10 for specialties. In some cases not even a top 10, just a top 5 or top 3. I don’t know why. Cheers.

can you post the rankings for engineering schools with highest degree doctorate

Hey CollegeBoundG, I posted the top 50 here:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cal-poly-pomona/1391425-2013-u-s-news-rankings-ucs-vs-cal-polys-engineering.html

let me know if you need anything else. :D

Though we should not put too much weight into rankings, I think they can also be used by schools to compare each other and identify areas to improve. It does seem like CPPs been on a relative slide the last decade despite upping their admissions requirements, becoming a more traditional residential campus, and increasing endowment funding. Why they’re sliding relative to the likes of Chico, Fullerton and Long Beach is beyond me. Let’s look at the following:

VS Long Beach,

CPP has higher admissions standards, same graduation rate, higher endowment (even for being a much smaller university), and academic reputation. CSULB has a lover STF ration (21 compare to 26 to 1 at CPP) and about the same graduation rate.

VS Fullerton,
CPP has way higher admissions standards, endowment and academic reputation and about the same STF (25 compared to 26 to 1)

VS Chico
CPP has higher admission standards and academic reputation and about the same endowment. Chico has a lower STF (23 compared to 26 to 1).

Despite CPP being a better school in reality and mostly on paper, it does become obvious that CPP is suffering in the rankings due to it’s relatively high student to faculty ratio. 26 is pretty high even for a CSU. I do question if this is just a difference in the way CPP computes this number. All CSUs get the same amount of funding per FTE (full time equivalent) number of students enrolled. I can’t see the big discrepancy with CSULBs 1 to 21 (which I believe has been artificially bumping them up in the rankings recently). Weather my suspicion is true or not, this is a good indication for CPP to look into this statistic a little more carefully and hopefully improve it. Aside from CP SLO, in which students are heavily subsidizing funding, CSUs should not have such a big discrepancy in faculty resources.

CPP and all CSUs could also do a better job graduating students in 4 years. I am hoping that the higher admissions standards the last few years will be reflected in the years to come.

It has to do with the USNWR’s ranking criteria. They are NOT basing on how well professors lecture or how well prepared somebody would be to find a job or have internship experience. They are based based off of professor salaries, how much alumni donate and, worst of all, high school counselor ratings. How could a high school counselor compare universities if they’ve have likely never attended more than a select few? Counselors are like “well, I heard that one was good…” And then that gets reinforced by high schoolers and parents themselves who believe it, etc.

Also, I agree that the student-to-faculty ratio (STR) is a good barometer, but it very much depends by college (and by major) in ratio to one:

Architecture & Environmental Design 17.7
Engineering 21.3
Education & Integrative Studies 21.9
Agriculture 23.8
Science 25.7
Collins College (Hospitality Management) 26.8
Business Administration 28.8
Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences 30.8

Source: http://www.csupomona.edu/~irar/stats/faculty/sfr/docs/SFR_CY_2011_2012.pdf

What’s worse is that the under-performing colleges of Business Administration and Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences account for 43 percent of the total number of classes offered at Cal Poly. In addition, on a first-hand anecdotal account, these two colleges, alongside Education & Integrative Studies, have ridiculously low academic standards. In my own personal experience with those colleges, classes are easy As if you do the assignments and go to class. I hope I don’t sound like an elitist jerk, but that’s truly what I, and my peers, have experienced. It’s unfair that putting 2 hours/week of outside study to a 4 unit history or political science class results in an A; whereas, 15 hours/week to a 3 unit engineering class results in a C. ******* dot com offers the ability to see the average GPA per professor, and you can see professors like Dashner in engineering averaging 1.45 GPA per class, Rejali 2.08, Nguyen 1.36, Wang 2.37, Izadi 1.97, Marcoff 1.96, but averages of 3.2-3.5 for classes in history, political science, ethnic studies, economics, and the likes.

The low GPA is what deters a majority of students from entering engineering. Not a lot of people are willing to take C’s. Also, I used to think it was unfair that they tend to have it easier but think about it. We are not in competition with these people for jobs. No guy with a 3.9 GPA in a liberal arts degree is going to be gunning for your engineering job. It is apples to oranges. Also, it is EXPECTED that students maintain a high GPA in social sciences. My girlfriend is going to have a hard time getting into Harvard with a 3.9 (Psychology & Art) undergrad GPA for graduate school.

The work may seem easier to us, but it is really only because we have taken general education courses, not the actual upper-divison classes in their major. Theoretically if one did start off in the major we could have a super high GPA and have worked a lot less, but what’s it worth to us? The fact is that the degree is worth something to them. I would’ve gone into English if I hadn’t gone into math. Would I be happier at some place like UC Berkeley with a 4.0 GPA? Hell no. I’d take much more pride in getting through something I liked and found enjoyable.

Would it really make a difference to us if their majors were really hard? I would still think people would turn up their noses and still say “not as hard as engineering, math, physics, chemistry, etc.”.

So I don’t think it’s unfair. When I was taking a physics class at my CC this past spring there were two teachers: both had PhD’s, both were from UCLA, one was easy and one was hard. I was in the hard class (by my own choice) and it took 5x as much effort to get through my class than my friends who took the other professor, memorized the answers to problems, and passed with easy A’s (they all matriculated to UCLA, UC Berkeley, UCSD).

Now that is unfair.

Also, take into account the job market for these people. They may have higher GPA’s, but how are they going to get jobs when the job market is saturated with liberal arts majors? After all the hard work you put in engineering you can definitely get a job. The same can’t be said for these people. Even with the very highest GPA, they’ll still be evaluated alongside peers from more prestigious universities that have the same GPA and be tossed out accordingly.

I do honestly think that Cal Poly Pomona should up their standards for all colleges outside of Architecture, Engineering, Collins College, and Science. The problem is that Cal Poly Pomona I feel like does not advertise. During the summer I have seen so many Cal Poly SLO ads on this very website I’ve been annoyed. Also, just simply googling Cal Poly SLO they have clothes made by Nike and the like. I can barely find any merchandise on other websites beside Cal Poly Pomona’s official bookstore. Even there it is lacking.

I know that when they bumped up their admissions standards a few years ago that people were reluctant to come and they had to admit a bunch of unqualified people because they had trouble filling the spots. What’s more is that we are not a research university and don’t get huge endowments to afford resources like UC students. That’s what increases prestige - money and opportunities. Heavy advertising and a STRONG alumni network. If there are tons of successful alumni coming out of Cal Poly Pomona and heading off to prestigious universities, getting prestigious jobs, getting into acting, etc. the name will get out there.

So I feel like if Cal Poly Pomona doesn’t start revamping their admissions standards heavily this university will fall by the wayside and be stuck with the stigmatism that it is only second best (a red-headed stepchild to Cal Poly SLO), only a CSU, and accepts a heavy amount of idiots that should have matriculated elsewhere. Very high-caliber people won’t come to CPP unless it has the resources and reputation to back it up.

Unfortunately, it is very hard to do this I feel like in a time of economic crisis.

Indeed. I think advertising is a think lacking at CPP. I mean, on this very own website I have heard people praising the Claremont College’s location with “easy access to LA, temperate climate, the beaches, the mountains, Orange County, etc”, but somehow Cal Poly Pomona is in a polluted area, gets too hot, the city of Pomona is ghetto, there’s nothing to do… even-though they are literally 5 minutes (5.5 mile drive) from each other on the I-10. The first tow steps Cal Poly Pomona needs to take are: (1) set a realistic standard for admissions, and (2) transition into a residential campus. It’s such a shame that a university with such rich academic tradition and philanthropy (things most CSUs lack) is run by fools. Case in point: calpoly.edu vs csupomona.edu… for heaven’s sake…
