Congrats to wirefox and M2CK! Such a relief and so exciting at the same time.

My son has one more acceptance and a deferral. He’s fortunate to have acceptances at two of his top three favorite schools so wasn’t too disappointed about the deferral. He probably won’t hear from the rest of his schools until January or February, but we feel very thankful to know that he’ll be in medical school somewhere next year.

GA2012MOM, where does your dd go to school?

Thanks everyone. It really is such a relief and GA2012MOM you are so right about the smile! And I’m sure it is exactly the same for S. He is still waiting to hear on quiet a few more schools but considering this one was one one of his favorites and he was offered a very generous scholarship, it could very well be where he winds up. As he said last night, he has one and that’s all he needs. Some day he will be Dr. and although I might be a tad biased, I think he is going to be very good at it on many levels.

Just had to come here and post a funny story. DS applied to Emory. DS never received a secondary from them (although from SDN it seems everyone gets a secondary). DS decided not to pursue it as it really wasn’t that important to his final list (wish he’s saved us the $$ and never put it on the list).

Today DS got an email from Emory stating they had withdrawn his application since he never submitted the secondary (that he never received). Bwahaaa. Just a reminder to everyone that you should follow up on applications if they are important to you because obviously mistakes do happen!

Hope everyone’s interview season is going well. DS has another interview next week, then 2 in January. I think those will be the last of the invites. Then comes the nail biting, waiting for hopeful acceptances. He’s super excited that he got an invite from a top 10 school, since his MCAT’s were below their average. It’s the only school he will have to fly to the interview. He’s very excited and nervous about that one, even more than the others!

Good luck to your DS VAMom! Sending positive thoughts your way, and hope to hear good news about the upcoming interviews.

I believe D is done. She is happy with the outcome, and trying now to focus on her classes - still has some challenging ones. There were a few med schools she applied to, and then didn’t submit the secondary, so we lost a few $$ on this process too. Just tried not to cringe at the credit card bill during app season!

Vamom - I think it is important to ask them for proof that they sent him a secondary. Since a payment was made, you need to get your pennies back from it!

VAMom, best of luck to your son! Yes, waiting is so hard but hopefully very good news from at least one school when all is said and done.
My DS also applied to a few schools and then never sent secondaries. One was actually from Emory…he decided he really didn’t want to go so far south. Fortunately, he isn’t regretting that decision.

It looks like D’s season is winding down. She’s lucky to have an acceptance early to relieve a little stress, but she received WLs at several schools she prefers. She is now trying to figure out the best time to send update letters as she is hoping to get off at least one of the WLs. Any advice??

First and very important, she needs to check to see if each school will accept a LOI or update. (This is usually mentioned somewhere on the applicant portal site. If not, she can call the admission office to ask.)

Some schools really, really don’t want to hear anything from the WLed applicants and will actually move your name farther down the list or take you off the list entirely if you contact them. (It’s called not following directions. Med schools hate that!)

Updates and most LOIs are pretty worthless according to the adcomms over on SDN. If your D has one really top favorite she would drop all her other acceptances/waitlists for–that’s the one she should write a love note to. Tell them she loves them above all else, reiterate why and promise she will attend there regardless of FA or other acceptances. (That’s called a strong letter of intent. This is the one LOI that can actually make a difference. Sometimes. No guarantee.)

If she really wants to send updates (and assuming the school even accepts updates)–she needs to have something significant to include–a publication, a presentation, an award, a semester’s worth of great grades perhaps with an increase in GPA, a new job–as well as telling the WL school she loves them and wants to go to school there.

I wouldn’t send any updates until at least mid-March/early April when the waitlists start to move.

Typically once waitlisted, an applicant is assigned a ordinal rank and writing the school usually makes zero difference in that rank.

It’s been really quiet on the med school application front for my son for the past month or two. He attended interviews in October, heard back from four schools (3 acceptances, 1 deferral) in November and then silence while he waited to hear from the other 5 schools that don’t release decisions until Feb/March. We assumed it was all over except for the waiting. Then, in the past week, he’s gotten three more interview invitations. We’re a little surprised by this flurry of activity so close to the end of the interview cycle and wonder if he’d just be interviewing for a spot on the waitlist at this point. With acceptances in hand, he decided not to attend two of the interviews but is still deciding about the third…which is at our state flagship and could be considerably less expensive than the private schools where he has acceptances.
It’s been quiet on this thread. Anyone else seeing a bit of a last minute activity?
Congratulations ohiomom! It’s great for your son to have choices. No more IIs here, but D is pretty sure she has decided and is extremely excited. The cost of attendance at her choices is virtually the same.
Congrats to dheldreth and ohiomom24!! Great to have choices and new II. My D hasn’t had any additional II recently and is probably done. Now the WL fingers crossed game is on for her. One of her schools has had good WL movement in the past, but the other 2 are less likely. The one with the best movement is her #1 by far, so we will be hopeful until the bitter end, lol. Dealing with last minute housing if any of her WL come through is going to be a daunting task, though.
Though we’ll have plenty of time to look for housing, the med school is in an area where housing is expensive, and not plentiful, so it will be a challenge.
Congratulations to all the acceptances. My DS joins Camomof3’s DD in the WL zone. He’s interviewed at 5, WL at 2 and no answers yet from 3. One of the WL is his top choice, unless one specific school he hasn’t heard from (and is a long shot) actually accepts him. Then it will be a tough choice.
It has been a bizarre collection of II’s from his entire list. I really expected him to get an interview at several of the schools that never contacted him (including in-state schools). He got an interview at a top school that he never expected to hear from. I would love to better understand how the committees work in choosing who to interview. I’m pretty confident he will be accepted to at least one of the schools, but it would be less stressful if he had an acceptance in his pocket.
