2014-2015 Audition Day Review

@addicted2MT - Michigan is also very up front about having no “talent” money. And getting merit $ there is highly competitive.

NYU does not hand out money either. The 70K plus is on you as I understand it. I did hear someone got some money from Michigan this year and the year before as well. But not sure whether that money came from “the school” or somewhere else. Maybe @Atlast knows? But again, it would be the extreme exception, not the rule.

About NYU… after poking around on here recently I read about how NYU will sometimes give merit aid based on desirability, as in how much they want you? I heard about this which is totally separate from financial aid. Does anyone have any experience/stories about this?

My D’s friend is at Steinhardt and between merit and talent received a full tuition ride

Interesting @broadway95. Curious if anyone knows if they’ve ever done this at Tisch?

@vvnstar‌ - Yep. Knew about Michigan which is why D is not applying there or at NYU either… Some people have told us to apply anyway, that “you never know…” but the audition process itself is so expensive that we had to eliminate some schools as these app and PS fees add up quickly! She will audition at a generous number of schools, but we had to make some tough decisions and those schools and a few others went off the audition list as a consequence. The good news? There are enough schools the D is excited about left on her audition list. The rest is in the hands of fate. BAL this weekend, my friends!

NYU Steinhardt does offer talent/merit combo which can be quite generous. I don’t know about Tisch. Also know of five kids (all out-of-state) who have, according to reliable sources, their parents, a full tuition ride and two of those with tuition plus full room and board at UMichMT. Not sure if that could possibly be true… but that’s what I’ve been told.

@addicted2MT - sounds like you have great options. Our D is at OCU. I wish she was going to be there this weekend but alas she will not. I know your D is very familiar with the school since she attended camp, but if you have any questions at all before, during or after auditions feel free to PM me. If I do t know the answers, I will find out from D. Sounds like camp reunions will make for a great audition weekend. Enjoy!!

My D received both merit and talent aide for NYU Tisch this year. It adds up to what I would call a “nice chunk” of tuition, making it less expensive than some of the other schools on her list. (Boston was her lowest award) but still more expensive than others (she was offered a full ride to one of her LAC safeties- but it wasn’t what she wanted)

Good to know. Did she have amazing stats? High GPA, Outstanding SATs? Under-represented group? MT (new Studio) or some other Studio? Great need? Amazing Talent? Just really curious about this. I have heard “few” receive these awards. Just want to try and figure out the whys and wherefors. If in fact any exist. Any info you feel you want to provide would be appreciated.

This may be a silly question, but how and when are you notified of these scholarship offers? Is it part of the package/offer from the MT dept, or something that comes later from admissions?

@tramsmom - D was notified of financial stuff via within a day or so of her admission. (NYU is on the late side- their stated date is April 1st) It was nice to get things fairly quickly, there were other schools where she had to wait for several weeks between admission and financial package (@jsr1900 - it generally comes from admissions). Of course there were the schools where there was the opposite problem- they contact you with huge $$, but you are waiting for ages to find out about artistic acceptance!!

As for the whys- not sure I can give you a full answer. She is not an underrepresented group, nor did fafsa say she had need. But she did have very very strong stats in both grades and ACT- for the merit aide, which was a nicely sized award. As for the talent (which was much smaller, but every bit helps) I don’t know. Of course I think she is amazing- but that goes without saying. To be honest- I think it might have been influenced by doing the NYU summer program the year before- they had a chance to get to know her work better.

As I said in my earlier post- for D, there were cheaper options, and more expensive options than NYU. $$ had been a huge concern in putting NYU on “the list”, but when the numbers came back it was a really pleasant surprise. I joked then (and now- college work is tough!) that all those hours I chained her to her desk were well spent…

If you learn one thing from hanging around here, it’s that financial aid is incredibly unpredictable. If you really want NYU, you just have to apply and see what the numbers are, but don’t neglect finding a financial safety.

Adding my two cents on NYU…my D rec’d a very generous talent award from NYU-Steinhardt. I was actually surprised. It was 100% talent based, and they told us it was based on her audition.

Millikin Audition Review:

Monologue went well.

Solos went well.

Dance: she broke her foot.

No joke.

(Don’t mean to be salty … I just don’t know whether to laugh or cry.)

OH NO!!! :((

Sorry!!! And hugs to you and your D!

Oh, @KaMaMom‌ !!! That’s awful! So sorry… Sending wishes for quick healing!

BALDWIN-WALLACE AUDITION DAY

We arrived Friday so that we could see @kategrizz 's D in ‘A Chorus Line’. It was a wonderful show!!! And she was wonderful in it!

Saturday morning check in was at 9:00am. There were LOTS of people there. After a brief welcome, the students were dismissed for their music theory, piano placement and auditions. They split them into groups, taking vocal performance majors, then music therapy & music education, then musical theatre. I counted 25 total (21f, 4m) MT auditioners. I was told by someone who attended the Friday auditions that there were 13 (no idea about f vs m).

Parents had an BW informational session from Anita Evans (admissions) followed by a great panel discussion with 5 current BW students. We were also treated to a lovely lunch. Campus tours were available, but if didn’t take one.

We rejoined our kids after lunch and sat through a wonderful master class. It was great to see/hear audition type performances from BW MT seniors and hear feedback/critique from a NYC casting agent.

The dance call began at 3:15 and we were on the road by 4:30p. During the dance call, parents had a Q&A with Victoria Bussert, followed by a Q&A with the parents of a current BW MT senior. Both were excellent & informative.

From my S perspective… He said they picked the two songs he expected them to pick and both were “good” and so was his monologue. No feedback from the panel, but S’s student escort was in the room during the audition and said, “Good job. Solid monologue, man!” So, that was nice. He said the dance call was harder than Wright State’s and he ‘got through it.’

Fun time for me passing the day with @tmygirl and @MTraleighmom. I enjoyed our day, ladies!

Sadly, S & I are both madly in love with this program… ~sigh~

I was there on Friday, we had 6f and 7m male auditions! Unexpected that there was more guys that girls!!

@KaMaMom‌ Oh my! I can’t believe it! She will get through this!

@MTmom2015‌ definitely an easy place to love. Fingers crossed!
