@barbnbrian Ours came with the packet. They list the criteria on their website. It includes stats and some blurb about leadership( maybe this is a way they can get out of offering it to everyone) We are out of state too. Daughter got 11K…so URI moved up to the short list. Their OOS tuition is reasonable compared to the privates even with the bigger scholarships from those schools. Do you live in a wealthy zip code??? I have always wondered if that plays into it. I would definitely call and inquire. My daughter applied EA. Her twin applied months later and we have not heard yet. I am sure she will get in, stats are higher. Just wondering if the merit awards have dried up.

Just checked the URI portal. Daughter #2 accepted. It was her safety.

We do not live in a wealthy zipcode area. She applied on Dec. 20th and heard back in a little over a month. I find it hard to believe merit money is gone already. She’s been offered $16k per yr to a private in MA and $22k per yr at Seton Hall. I will call URI admissions office tomorrow.

@Twinmom2014, I am looking through the URI website for the first time, trying to determine what type of scholarships are available for OOS students, and the stats required for them, but can not find the information. Can you please point me in the right direction?

@mumto3 This is the scholarship one of my daughters got. Have not gotten packet for the other daughter, she applied later. No matter what they offer she is going elsewhere. (We are out of state too, Mass) http://www.uri.edu/admission/scholarships.html

My son got accepted for Film. We are OOS and going to visit the school on the 14th. He was offered a total of $48,000 for 4 years. Being OOS this will probably not be enough since we also have another child in college. I am hoping to speak with someone at the school about this.He is really interested in this school and I would love him to be able to go here if he likes it after our visit. College is just so expensive and I do not want him to come out with a huge debt. I also was curious if anyone knows anything about work study to help pay for some of the college costs.

I called URI admissions and they pulled D’s file and agreed with me that she does qualify for a merit award and they didn’t know why the counselor that originally reviewed her application missed that. They are resending us a new letter, with Merit detail!

Good. Sometimes it is better to stay on top of these things.

I have twin sons who applied and were accepted, one with merit and one without, though the one who didn’t get it does seem to meet the criteria…thought I wonder about the leadership criteria also. The son who got it does have a higher average and scores, way above the minimum. The one who didn’t get it was closer to the min. But I will call now. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

@gerbilmom . I have twins that both got merit at URI. The were not the same, as it should be. They applied to a few of the same schools and one was always higher…except UVM. They both got Presidential and only one qualified.

Update to the phone call I made to URI. Daughter got a new acceptance letter, this time with a merit award - the Coronet Scholarship, $11k a year for 4 yrs, total award of $44k. Happy I called them to inquiry about merit, I was surprised the first letter had no award. Still don’t know if she will accept, UConn is her top choice.

@Barbnbrian…my daughters are waiting on UCONN too. I think one of them is definitely going to URI because of the gymnastics club…third in the nation. She does not want the pressure of division but still wants to compete. The merit award (11k/ yr) makes it a very affordable choice. Her twin sister just got a higher award of 13.5… she won’t be going.

Twinmom2014 - FYI The gymnastics club team is more demanding than club teams at other schools. She should be sure to like the school for more than their gymnastics.

@mamomoftwo… I know…that is what I keep telling her. She won’t listen. She was accepted to better schools…I am learning to deal with it. At least it will be somewhat inexpensive. I visualize a transfer student in my future.

My son was admitted to the Film/Media program at URI. We are from Long Island. I was wondering if there was anyone else on here who also got admitted into Film/Media from Long Island.

Hi guys, my niece was accepted at URI and we’re wondering about meal plan, whether it’s worth doing the campus premiere meal plan over the campus plus? It appears to be the best value, but is the $200 Ram account more than you’d need? Thanks for your input.

The meal plans have changed slightly from when my daughter was a freshman. The campus plus used to include ram dollars. You can add ram dollars to their account at any time so the real question is how many guest meals will she use? 10 was more than my daughter needed and 20 certainly would have been excessive. When she had visitors, they would go off campus rather than eating in the dining hall with her.
