2014 Bioscience Admission and Interviews for International Students

Hi guys,
Someone did something similar to this in 2011, but the thread is no longer active.

I've Decided to bring this thread to life for all international students looking to applying to US Universities for Biomed/bioscience PhD programs.

Please post your stats, and later on, any interview invites.

Also you're welcome to post any valuable information on interviews and travel to US.

Ahhh just another thing...please mention whether you are an international with/without US degree.

Good luck to us!

You are applying to? Which types of programs? I am an international student with US undergrad degree

Hello nns91! I haven’t finalised the list of schools I’m applying to yet. I’m an international student from Nigeria. What program are you looking at?

I am looking at molecular bio programs with a few immunology programs. How about you?

Hey nns91!
I’m looking at a program in Developmental Biology. :)

Hi there!

US Citizen with a degree from a prestigious German biomedical program.

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean’s list for all my semesters, a couple scholarships and a funded summer fellowship to do research last summer. Presented research at a national conference and at a local research symposium, will be 2nd or 3rd author in a paper currently being written.

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Have helped with department orientation for freshmen students.

Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: Helped as an international student orientation leader for 1 year.

Applying to Where:
MIT Biology
Stanford Biology
JHU
UW-Madison
BCM
UTSW
Berkeley MCB
Harvard MCO
Rockefeller University
Princeton Molecular Bio.
University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

I know my GRE scores might be a little low for the places I am applying to, however I have always been a bad standardized test taker and I feel my research experience + my letters of recommendation, which I have been told are great, will truncate the GRE. Also, I was already approved to apply as an international to University of Illinois -UC so that makes me feel a little good.

Hey Orimsz, are you the same person on the Gradcafe thread? I think your scores should get you into some good schools though.

Hey P4ND3R, your stats are really impressive.

Hey P4ND3R, your stats are really impressive. As a US Citizen, do you consider yourself an international student? Are you currently living in the US?

Has anyone completed applications yet?

I have completed 3 out of 14 so still have a good amount to go but once I am done with editing my statements, it won’t take too long to finish the rest.

Thank you dolapobello1!

Well, I consider myself an American student, albeit with a different educational background.

Honestly, compared to the many applicants in the other threads I feel a bit low scoring, especially verbal.

Hey nns91! Congratulations on completing some applications. 14 schools is quite a number. I wish you all the best. I probably would apply to that many too, if I had the funds. I’m looking at 6-8 though.

P4ND3R, some people dream of your verbal score. I think it would meet the cut-off of any grad school - even if thegradschool was in space. What program are you looking at? Developmental Biology, Neurobiology, Cell Biology or Neurobiology?

From what I hear, the most important part of your application (in the biosciences) is the Letter of Recommendation, followed by the SOP, the research experience, then the grades.
How true is this?

Hi dolapobello1,

I guess my verbal is a bit high, especially in science. I’m more worried about research experience and GPA, especially since I have a bad grades on my transcript.

I’m looking at Biochemistry and Chemical Biology.

Quite a lot of applicants don’t have a lot of applicants don’t have a lot of research esperience, so I don’t think that will seriously weaken your application.
Have you applied to any schools yet?

Many gradschool applicants do not have years of research experience. A good number (myself inclusive) just finished college.

I’m writing my SOPs etc. as we speak. Not very far yet.
