Kid committed to Harvard - now waiting for Likely Letter…pins and needles

Congrats Terrafin

Yale!! Likely letter came Friday

My son is a recruited athlete to Yale, and had a hell of a time getting his common app in given all the problems this year. The coach says he will probably get his letter next week. Did everyone else on this thread get the application in prior to getting the LL?

roxlet - it is my understanding that you MUST have the complete common application in so it can be reviewed and approved before a likely letter can be issued.

The app. has to be in prior to the likely because the likely comes from admissions–and admissions can’t issue a “likely to admit” letter without going through the same admissions process they go through for all prospective students.

roxlet – yes, my child received a likely letter from Yale only after the entire application was submitted (CA, Yale Supplement, Score Reports, School Report and LORs). All was submitted last week of September (glitches galore), call came from the Coach early part of second week of October that LL was approved, and letter arrived a few days later.

Yes, I did know that, which was why it was so frustrating that the Common App took almost 10 days to be received by Yale. But we know it’s forthcoming since his grades and scores were vetted by admissions before the coach made the offer.

A friend of mine whose daughter was recruited to Harvard about 6 years ago said that the Harvard LL was completely different than the one from Princeton, which the daughter’s friend got. Harvard’s basically said don’t rob a convenience store, whereas Princeton’s was like a lengthy contract. What does the Yale LL look like? Are there stated conditions?

roxlet – it’s 4 paragraphs and I’m too lazy to re-type it in full here. First para says “It gives me great pleasure to tell you that we have completed a preliminary review of your application and are awarding it a ‘likely’rating.’”

Second para begins: “This admissions terminology means that you are likely to be admitted by Yale when the full admissions committee formally convenes in November” and then goes on to say that official notifications will be mailed in mid-December. That para concludes: “Please know that we will review your mid-year and final transcripts carefully, and that we expect you to maintain your present level of academic performance and personal integrity for the remainder of the year.” This is the part that is not particularly warm and fuzzy.

Next para talks about how the student will bring a special skill to Yale but is not being admitted because the student is an athlete.

Last para is warmer and concludes: “We congratulate you on your accomplishments, and we are proud to welcome you as a member of the Yale family.”

Thanks for the paraphrase of the Yale LL!
