2015-16 Med School Applicants and their Parents

3 years ago, a nephew was having issues with a language class that he was taking as a filler because the instructors felt he is not supposed to miss any classes!

D got in touch with her Profs she will be taking classes in Fall and they have already gotten back to her and they all seem to be very accommodating.

So we had a wardrobe issue this week. DS had his pants tailored for his interview suit. Luckily he had an event where he decided to wear his suit since he discovered that his pants that were in a plastic bag had been thrown out in the garbage. Of course the replacement pair of pants are not on sale, so I am hoping that the replacements can get to him on time and that the tailor will not ruin things before his first interview.
He also only has 2 interviews, 1 rejection and silence everywhere else. the wait is killing me more than him.

Mantra for the process: it only takes one “yes” to make a doctor.

Repeat as often as necessary. (And indulge in adult beverages PRN.)

Wine is always the answer.

At this point 3 years ago, my son’s Committee Letter hadn’t yet been sent. So at this point, no IIs, either.

Son had his interviews in Oct and Nov and then one in Jan. We went thru Christmas break with no acceptances (yet). It was like a dark cloud over the holiday season. By then we had switched to spirited eggnogs.

Thankfully, the first acceptance came on the morning of January 2nd. (I still remember exactly where I was when son called with the good news. Thank goodness H was driving, the tears just flowed.) After that, waiting on the others was a lot easier.

It’s still very early. No need to panic.

Best wishes everyone.

Congrats to those with IIs so far.

D’s bff didn’t have any interview invites until December, went to 6 during January-March, ended up with 3 acceptances and 3 WL’s that she withdrew from (could have ended up as acceptances). First acceptance in March. Thank goodness she was the very patient type and weathered the storm.

Thank you all for the encouraging words. Like @MizzBee the waiting is agonizing for me too. D is far away and keeps herself busy preparing for the two II she has. 4 to 6 weeks after that another series of waits kick in. Not sure which waiting is going to be worse

PS: Just curious. D- Daughter, S-Son, H-Husband. What is DS?

DS = dear son

I am wondering how much people talk about this process with others outside their immediate family? Do you tell your students grandparents, aunts and uncles every time an II comes through? Do you talk about it at your work place, with your friends and colleagues? Or do you wait until an acceptance comes?

My kids kept pretty mum unless someone actually asked.

I did talk with my co-worker because her [step]children are approx the same age as my children. We had always swapped kid stories, esp once a week when we had to carpool from one work location to another. (A good 30 minutes each way.) But I didn’t volunteer info. If she asked, she got all the gory details. Not just about med school but also for residency interviews for my older D. ( LOL She called it “better than any soap opera”.)

Greatly depends on the person I am talking to. There is a fine line between boasting and sharing information and I am never sure how someone will take it unless I know them well enough to volunteer information.

We don’t really talk about it outside of the family. He talks to his other pre-med friends and I assume on SDN. When he gets an acceptance, though, we will tell the family and friends. They have all been supportive of him throughout his college years.

I talk to my siblings pretty regularly, so they knew what was going on. I didn’t really talk much to non-family except my closest friends…and here on CC… lol Some of you CC friends knew before others did!

People are pretty fascinated by the whole process - maybe because it’s different from the other app processes.

Early interviews and acceptances are wonderful. That being said, D had not gotten any interviews at this point in her application process. She was in graduate school overseas so the handful of invitations she received during the fall were postponed until she came home the first week of December. She was very fortunate and was in at two programs by the end of December. As someone said earlier in the thread, that first acceptance changes everything. A number of interviews were cancelled once she had an acceptance. She received a few more invites very early in the new year and had one the first week of March. Her top choice school interviewed her in January, waitlisted her and offered her a spot on May 5 of that year. It was a long haul but ultimately worked out. Try not to worry if you haven’t heard anything yet.

D’s gap years were helpful in that she had watched two rounds of her pre-med friends go through it and while as hopeful and stressed as anyone, the quirkiness of the process was not new to her…respective interview timetables, different lag times after an interview and before hearing yea or nay, a lower ranked school not responding while being invited by more highly ranked programs…things like that. I was the nervous-nelly mom on SDN looking at timetables.

I once spoke with someone who did not get in until the week before classes started.

this place is so quiet. D completed couple of interviews and doing a few more soon. The not to be named midwest school still shows incomplete app after 40 days.

DS just had an interview this week. It seemed to go well. He has another two at the end of the month. Other than that, it is absolute silence. The silence is deafening.

Quietly waiting
Obsessive checking the web
Hoping good news comes

A Haiku because I have nothing else to report : )

D was very impressed with the new Dallas county hospital. Apparently everyone gets their own room, patients, residents and interns.

DS completed 4 interviews. Loved all the schools and would be happy with any of them. Has 2 more next couple of weeks. Just received 2 more. Otherwise silence from everyone else. Nothing even from his undergrad. That I think bugs me the most.

One rejection so far…and just silence…:frowning:
