^ The quote was taken out of the correct context- which was in regard to figuring out the financial situation of a SO/spouse. They were not referring to a physician in residency working two jobs.
My D will start residency as a 25 year old with no plans on having any children until much later if ever. She will have plenty of time to deal with her loans like the vast majority of med students. My piece of mind is that we haven’t raided our retirement. To each his/her own.
“Anyone still waiting for an acceptance?”
DS still has two more interviews and will know the results of one more school in March. He is already in but another school is his first choice. I am just glad he had choices, and hope he will be happy wherever he lands.
Can’t complain. 11 interviews. Most of them early. 6 acceptances. 1 post interview hold. 3 wait lists. 1 continuance (whatever that means). No post interview outright rejections. But ofcourse he wants the wait lists schools. So now we wait. From the 6 that he has he keeps changing his mind. Every day it’s a different decision. Hopefully second looks will make it easier. Some didn’t even announce 2nd looks yet. Do all of them have it? And btw what’s the dress code for those ? Overall I consider it a great cycle for him. He will probably have a different opinion since he didn’t get any of his top choices. But I keep reminding him how lucky he is to have a choice.
D had to give up 3 admissions in Texas because she could only keep one as of `1/20 to make room for other Texas residents. Makes life easier but she still has choices without scholarship announcements and so it is hard to make any decisions until they are all announced.
There’s no dress code for Second Looks. They are a lot less formal than interviews and are more student-centered. He should dress casually but nice, not student-sloppy. Dress khakis and a polo/button up shirt or something similar would be fine. D2 wore a skirt or dress slacks with a nice top & flats to hers and the other attendees were dressed similarly. She didn’t go to all of her Seconds Looks, but only to her 2 top/most likely choices because travel (school distance required her to fly) & hotels are expensive. IIRC, there wasn’t an option to stay with a student host for 2nd Look.
Good luck to her Texaspg and to you. I think plenty of us parents have seen such different rationale in picking which one. I know my son picked the cheapest (the strongest however in what he eventually wanted to do, primary care), MiamiD daughter picked the most expensive! but the one she liked the very best, I am unsure of mom2collegekids son’s reasoning (but his scholarship didn’t hurt!) and Wayoutwestmom’s daughters (2) both choose the SAME school!
@katwittens - Thank you. D is liable to pick the most expensive. She got into 4 top 10 schools and waitlisted at a 5th and I don’t see her qualifying for any FA.
Unless she goes to a Texas school, it is not going to be easy on our retirement account.
And the concept and actual implementation of “unit loans” GAG! UGH! Sooooooo much money…
Congrats to both your daughters Arisamp and Texaspg!!
Being close to home is the best! I am of course VERY biased since son also went far far away for undergrad but was so close for med school. I know so spoiled. And now with residency we shall see.
CONGRATS! CONGRATS!
So happy for yall, they’re going to be DOCTORS!! Yep, yep so happy and excited!
I have been on hiatus from CC for several months. I popped back in to tie up some loose ends, including telling you al that after 20+ apps, 2 interviews, and several interview invites that she turned down, D has two acceptances. She is 2 for 2 with interview to acceptance ratio. She has decided to attend our instate school and probably apply to do an MD/MPH joint program. (she does have a PH minor and the necessary coursework to do this).
Back to your regularly scheduled programming and back to my hiatus.
Congratulations to everyone!
Son is very confused. Every time I speak to him he has a different number one choice. Second looks are starting next week. He’s going to try to do them all. Hopefully he will have a better idea after that.
Questions about filling out FAFSA. Don’t think he will be getting any financial aid. Some schools specifically say that they want parents info no matter what. And others say that if you’re not applying for need based aid they don’t need parents info. How do we fill out the FAFSA then? I don’t think you can do different versions of it.

My D. was not sure about her top 2 either. She was leaning towards one and ask us to go with her to look for her apartments while she will be at the Second Look event. We took 2 vacation days and went hunting for her apartment. She flipped her decision after the Second Look at both schools…however, we still had to rent her apartment ourselves at the different location than we were looking because she decided to go abroad before her medical school started and it started earlier than most others.
In regard to FASFA, we filed every year to make sure that D. has something if we loose our job(s). She declined FA every year (they were just loans). " Don’t think he will be getting any financial aid. " - everybody does (I think), but as I said, they are just loans and they are expensive loans, it did not make any financial sense for us to use them.
