So I'm aware that this question is posed virtually ever year before the new fall term beings... but what exactly is the situation with the "required" summer reading? Can we expect UF to rise to their threats of handing out quizzes/tests/assignments/etc on the book? As in, anything that would test our knowledge of the book and subsequently reflect upon our grade in a class.

For a bit of background information on my situation, I am an incoming freshman that placed out of the introductory English course--though I will be taking another upper-level English/creative writing course instead. My major is within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and I am not taking First Year Florida.

Any information would be helpful, because frankly I'd rather read a book of my own choice than this dreadful thing for the next few weeks. :P

Depends on who you have as your professor. They’ll tell u on the first day of class whether you must read it or not. And always check the syllabus.

I see, thank you. So if they were to utilize the book, it would probably be something that we would be given time to read/discuss in class versus an insta-quiz within the first couple of classes? I suppose that is what I am most paranoid about, haha. Can’t say I relish the idea of beginning my college career with a foul grade.

(I also checked my English/CW course and it seems as though all books are encompassed under the general course pack, so no specifics)

I’m an engineering major and the whole thing close to a writing class I’m taking is Marriage and Family. I’m guessing I won’t be quizzed on this?

you definitely do not have to read the book, ok? they don’t even cover it in first year florida, and none of my friends who took an english class had to do anything with the book. and also, it’s not high school, even if you were supposed to read it , it would only be to “promote community and discussion” and you would maybe have to write like a reaction paper. you’re not gonna show up on the first day and get a 20 question book quiz, they’ve got more important things to teach you. but seriously, just read it, they pick good books, and it’s not like it’s gonna take you more than a few hours to finish.
