2016 and beyond wedding moms and dads (Part 2)

@BunsenBurner we got our flowers from the florist at a grocery store. They were fabulous…and not that costly.

Today is the 6th wedding anniversary of my S and DIL who I started this thread when they were about to get married - the first one of my three. Still the only one!

It’s fun to think back to that night and think was everything perfect? No. But everything was PERFECT!!! :woman_with_veil: :man_in_tuxedo:

Costco online has way more flower choices than local Costco stores. Come delivered to your house, bulk or in arrangements. By phone I learned from the Costco rep they could be even more color specified than the website indicates. Used them for an event with about 10 tables a few years ago and they were beautiful, fresh, and reasonably priced.

Thank you!

I just saw some bouquets at the grocery store next to us - they looked exactly what kid envisioned for her flowers! Thank you, I will check with them. Did not think of using them as a florist. They have the most amazing roses!

A friend used Costco bulk flowers for her D’s wedding. Awesome and relatively inexpensive. She also used YouTube (and Pinterest, I believe) for some guidance…hint: hairspray kept the roses and cala lilies looking fabulous. Friend is very talented, so the bouquets and table arrangements were gorgeous…and very professional looking. I’m not sure I could have handled the stress the day before/day of wedding! The one thing to keep in mind is that flowers delivered before hand need to be kept cool…her hotel room was icy cold with AC to keep flowers perky!

We also thought about using the Costco bulk flowers - I remember just being a little overly concerned about shipping - would they arrive too early or late? - and any product error or the possibility of “bad” or overtired flowers.

DIL ended up getting a tip that there was a woman who worked at Kroger who did BEAUTIFUL arrangements and was willing to do their wedding. It was a fraction of the cost of a formal florist.

DD knew a woman who ran her floral business out of her home (had the professional floral refrigerator) and was excellent as well as cost-effective (one of my friends is a Master Gardner and commented about how lovely the arrangements were). She did the set up herself at the church and hall/venue, and delivered the bridal/bridal party bouquets. It pays to know people!

D also used someone who does flowers out of her home. D took her pictures of what she liked, and the woman worked with her to come up with beautiful flowers that fit the budget D was willing to pay.

So the motto of this story is…if you’re looking for an at home business, considering floral arrangements!!!

We, too, will be doing flowers the DIY way.
I ordered them from from the wholesale parent of Stadium Flowers, Cascade Floral Wholesale, up in Marysville. We have to go up there to pick up a table from my sister, so it’s an easy stop. They deliver for $15, but since we’ll be up there we’ll pick up and inspect them. Many options for blooms and colors. D’s friend will help with the arranging.

Thank you for a great flower tip! I will check them out. Stadium Flowers are great.

I found some images of ivy used as the basis for centerpieces… looks good and is as environmentally friendly as one can get! Rip out an invasive species and decorate. A win-win!

Here are our centerpieces. I’m not sure what the greens are, but they had tiny purple flowers in them, and I think babys breath….made at the grocery store.

And a Hurricane candle in the middle. And votives around. Easy peasy and looked very nice. We used some for the breakfast the next morning, and our neighbors took some home. And the rest went to waitstaff who wanted them.

Oh, good; happy to help. The thought of running around to Trader Joe’s or taking a chance on costco was not something I really wanted.

Not sure if I already posted this somewhere, but a huge cost savings for my daughter was getting her wedding cake at Publix. She’s not a big sweets person and started noticing at other weddings that the cakes were sitting around uneaten, so she didn’t want to spend a lot of money on it. Publix makes amazing cakes! They even do cake tastings for weddings - my daughter and son-in-law picked three flavors and they baked whole single-layer cakes for the tasting (got to take home the leftovers!) It was a simple tiered design and the florist added greenery around it.

I think their cake cost $200-$300, and Publix delivered it!

Re: cakes. Some folks get a smaller layered cake…or a “fake decorated layer cake” with a real cake top which is where the couple cuts the cake. That is wheeled away presumably to be cut and plated…but folks we know used delicious sheet caked from Costco or the like. Way easier to cut…and way less costly.

Our kids had a two layer real cake decorated with flowers to cut. But they elected to have a venetian table as their dessert…they were supposed to have 4-5 desserts, but the chef actually served 8! It was quite a nice variety, and very tasty.

Cake laying around!? I can’t imagine! One of the highlights of a wedding to me!

D2 was at a wedding this weekend. She said that there was a pretty tiered cake but they were serving a lot of people a sheet cake piece. There’s something about that slice of layered tier cake that is SOOO wonderful….it seemed odd that they were sort of “saving” the tiers!!

My motto: have plenty of cake!!!

Me too! But I guess for the 20-somethings, dancing gets in the way of cake eating  She was also not interested in saving a tier to freeze for the anniversary.

I will say that for me, the Publix cake blew away the very expensive bakery cake that her friend had a few months later (bakery cakes always seem to be dry and too dense for me).
