***2016 National Merit Finalist Thread***

Timbercreek, nobody knows for sure because mail can get lost and there is no transparency. That said, I don’t believe a post has ever shown up with a new rejection letter showing up at this date or ever. It’s been said rejection letters came out on Jan 13 in mail Counselors are getting Certificates sent in Mail on Feb 3. Don’t spend the money you’re planning on until you get your certificate, but …I’d bet my car those who haven’t gotten a letter are not getting one.

Thanks @lcgusa I will check the portal… I know the rules are different this year so not sure, and I didn’t get any clearer answer from my email back from the dept of ed or our school lol.

@XCjunior2016 I also just got a presidential scholar’s letter. An encouraging moment amidst all the post-college-apps tension!

@timbercreek16 Are you leaning towards UCF? I’m OOS (Indiana) and all but committed to UCF. In fact, I’ll probably commit when NMFs are officially announced (of course, that’s assuming I am one, but no rejection news this far is good news!) and the scholarship is a big draw for me, too.

Are the presidential scholars generally all perfect scorers?

@nw2this because my state has a low population, I got nominated with 1580 (CR +M)

You can also get nominated for art

@shunterr Have u visited UCF? My daughter and I did. We met some great kids in the Honors College as well as the the Dean of the Honors College. He was a very nice guy. We just happened to wander in when they were getting ready for an ice cream social for the students. They had great stories about the seminars and speakers that have come as well as the internships that have been acquired as a result. If you are a Disney fan and have been to Epcot recently, the voice of Test Track is a UCF graduate :slight_smile: She got an internship as a result of a speaker who came from Disney. Then after her internship she applied and got a permanent position after graduation. They have a lot of corporate connections at that school especially with Disney and related to the hospitality field. It is a HUGE campus. They do have a large commuter population too. We know several students or previous students including last year’s salutatorian from our high school who loves the Honors College experience she is having. One of my daughter’s best friends is strongly considering it. They have fantastic scholarships. In state NMF students who we know that attended when we visited actually got so much money between their package and their Bright Futures Scholarship , that they paid their cost of attendance and a car and had money in the bank! CRAZY! They were literally getting paid to go to school there lol. Not a terrible location to be in either… great shopping, Disney close by and not terribly far from beaches. It’s only a few hours from Miami and Daytona (in case since you are from Indy you may like NASCAR). Plus close to the cruise terminal to spend some of that extra money on spring break!! Good Luck! If you don’t know any current students unaffiliated with admissions and want to speak to one, let me know and I will put you in touch with someone! :slight_smile:

@fbhsmom We actually visited this past September and we LOVED it! It was a game changer for us - my mom and I didn’t love the idea of attending it over my other options just because of the scholarship, but we met with a NMF who currently studies there and she couldn’t say enough about how much she loved it. She said the Honors College was absolutely amazing for connecting students with career opportunities, which is what’s most important for me in a school. Unless some amazing scholarship package comes from one of my other options that brings the cost closer to that of UCF, it looks like I’m becoming a knight!

@shunterr That is great news! Well remind me around April 1st and anyone I know who is definitely attending I can put you in touch with. Right now one of my daughter’s close friends is deciding between that and UF so if decides to be a Knight I’ll put you in touch with her! She is a really bright girl and lots of fun… plus it’s always nice to know people who live locally. He mom is a teacher in FL and really nice. If you ever needed anything she would be a good resource closeby. Good luck to you!

@shunterr I’m definitely leaning more towards UCF. Their staff were all very friendly when I visited in November, and it’s a definite bonus to have some leftover money each semester. The Burnett HC also accepted me, so there’s the extra benefit of being able to register for classes early (which is helpful when you consider how fast classes fill). They’re hosting an event in March for NMF’s which I’ll probably attend.
As a whole, UCF just seemed to be a lot more proactive in trying to recruit me as a student. They reached out to me on multiple occasions asking me if I had any questions about their NMF package or any questions about UCF in general. Their efforts were what swayed me over to them.
I hope you make NMF!

The big moment has arrived. NMF letters should be going out today, to arrive starting approx. 2/9.

@momofsmartdancer Is that the earliest they’ve come in the past? I’m not familiar with the past delivery timelines, but six days is a long time for it to get from the NMSC in Illinois to my HS in Indiana 0_o Thanks for the heads up! I’ll be anxiously awaiting that NMF letter, but I think no news by now is just about the best news I can have at the moment!

@shunterr
I reviewed past threads and found the 9th was generally the first date that schools claimed to have received notice. I think that there was one or two home-school households that received it earlier.

My d is a candidate for US Presidential Scholar. We received our notice in the mail on 1/25. I think her high school probably received notice on same day. Yesterday, I talked to Asst. Principal about a prearranged absence for college visit. While discussing the need for two days for the visit, I mentioned that my d had received notice that she was candidate for the Presidential Scholar. The Asst. Principle told me that she had become aware of this on Thursday of last week (1/28). Yet, as of my conversation with her on 2/2, the school had yet to discuss it with d.

The culture of our admin is such that I don’t think they really like the higher ability students much and somewhat resent the time spent creating or responding to opportunities for this group.

We are in Indiana also. I think it likely that the school will receive notification by Monday afternoon on 2/8. I don’t think they will bother notifying the students for a couple of weeks. It is not a priority for them and I honestly think they just resent having their time taken up with notifying the students.

The most recent example of their lack of motivation or accountability was with 1st semester grades. The semester ended 12/18. Other area school districts scheduled a teachers day for them to complete grading and entering the grades on 12/19. Our school district did not schedule a day until 1/4. I think we got the grade reports during the week of 2/18.

@momofsmartdancer my D school doesn’t see, to pay 'inch attention to the higher achieving students either. Quite disappointing. Every month we receive an email newsletter always celebrating the athletes and how so and so came in 4th place for whatever, but for the top 1% students in the country who got national merit, no mention at all. I did call and express my disappointment and they were very apologetic, but it took two more months for them to acknowledge my kid.

Correction to prior post: week of 1/18

UCF is also the NMF school that really rang true and jumped over all the rest for our family and my D. The Honor’s College was really impressive and very pragmatically beneficial. The school did not seem nearly as big as the total student number would suggest, is well designed and the students we met were pretty awesome. It jumped from the safety category right into the group at the top of her list. We heard today that there are going to be some different NMF and Honor’s College days for accepted students in March, with the invites going out in a few days. D will be going to those hopefully, though I think her Mom will be the one making the trip with her instead of the entire family this time. Loved the school and the people, to say nothing of the location.

Only a few more days!

@greeny8 & @momofsmartdancer,

That is very disappointing to hear. We live in Oklahoma and sports are big here, but my daughter’s school has been very good about honoring other standouts besides sports. They sometimes even use sports to help honor others. For example when the NMSF were named, the school took a football halftime to introduce each SF and gave information about them. They also brought them to the school board meeting and had each one introduced to each board member. There also must have been something somewhere else because my daughter said that most adults in the HS now knows who she is and she is always congratulated and noticed by them on a daily basis. This is a large school at over 4k kids in the HS so very nice that she continues to get positive feedback for her accomplishments.

Wow, that’s pretty incredible especially when you consider how many students are at that school. Out of curiosity, how many NMSFs did your school have? @Zombicmom3

I’m trying to understand how the notification system works at this point. Did they mail letters to the schools on the 3rd and then they’ll mail letters to us on the 10th? Or is it an electronic notification? We found out about NMSF status when people started emailing to say congrats because it was published in our local paper! We got a letter at our house many days later. I’m hoping we find out before the community at large this time. I asked the counselor if she’d heard anything but she hasn’t answered me back yet.

Also, I’m wondering if anyone is not looking at the large southern schools that are trying to woo NMFs with full rides? My daughter is interested primarily in small liberal arts schools. Thankfully, most of them do have modest NMF scholarships but she did get invited to Truman State to interview for their full scholarship, which is based on overall scores and academic record, not just PSAT. I’m less on pins and needles about NMS at this point and more anxious to find out about admission and financial aid packages because most of the private SLACs she applied to haven’t even made acceptance offers yet. One actually had a CSS Profile deadline of Feb. 1 and then asked whether the applicant was a NMF in the supplement. I wanted to write in the explanation box, “You must know NMF designation does not happen by Feb. 1 so if you need this information, why is your deadline so early?” Some of these schools make no sense! A lot of her classmates have already signed letters of intent for sports and we don’t even have acceptances yet, let alone financial aid offers. This whole process is slightly bizarre.
