***2016 National Merit Finalist Thread***

UCF will give me full ride if I make NMF, plus they throw in a free Macbook and guaranteed Honor’s housing.

I talked with a couple of previous NMFs who are currently UCF students. All of them have leftover scholarship money that they get to keep regardless of whether they chose to live on campus or not.

My DD can also get the UCF, and UF will give her $$ from the FIS (Florida incentive scholarship) but unfortunately my DD wants to go OOS. The only school she applied to that that will give her something is Vanderbilt.

@greeny8 I applied EDII to vandy and didn’t know about the scholarship until you mentioned it lol

I was considering UF too, but they didn’t make the promise UCF did. UCF told me that if Florida decides to stop funding FIS, then I wouldn’t be responsible for any of the remaining expenses. I tried asking UF about this, but they danced around my question.

@XCjunior2016 as long as you put vandy as your first choice you’ll get $5000 a year. Not much but better than nothing.

@timbercreek16 that’s the first I heard about this…thank you for the info!

I envy you all! I was counting on the FIS to pay for me to go to one of the FL schools!

Anyone have opportunity for a Full Ride if you become a Finalist? We are waiting to hear on my son and very nervous. 3 students at his school are SF.

@wyonurse16 It doesn’t matter how many NMSF’s are at your son’s school. Some schools have over 100 NMSFs and they all make Finalist.

Rejection letters were sent out many days ago. Since you haven’t received one, then likely your son has made it.

What is your son’s major?

I think TAMU is your son’s first choice, but please be award that TAMU requires a high GPA to keep the award. It is very easy for a STEM major to get below a 3.5. I wouldn’t let my kid go to a school that required that high of a GPA to keep the merit. College is very different from high school. Many straight A students suddenly will get some B’s or even C’s in the tougher courses.

Reading up now on FIS and there are 6 schools in Florida that are a part of the award as long as you choose one of those schools as your first choice then you have a shot at a full ride.

@greeny8 how exactly does FIS work? I couldn’t find anything on UF’s site that said NMF are guaranteed to get anything!!

Anybody get a presidential scholars program thing in the mail ?

@fbhsmom not 100% sure but see if this helps

http://www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/SSFAD/factsheets/FIS.pdf

My SAT scores isn’t high enough for presidential scholars, but congrats to any who have. I’ve know those who have been nominated in the past and they have been incredibly smart!

@fbhsmom have you checked the UF portal? Lots of active discussion on there about FIS from people who got it last year.

@greeny8 I saw that too… but that says it was for last year and I heard things have changed so I’m trying to find anything written up on the changes but have had no luck! If you see anything for 2016-2017 please let me know :slight_smile: I did email the person listed on that document from the Dept of Ed… we’ll see what we can find out!

@XCjunior2016
I actually keep checking mail box in case of rejection letter. My d keeps telling me no chance of rejection. Logical or not- I won’t feel comfortable until we get the actual NMF notification

No rejection letter in the mail box. My d got the Presidential Scholar letter instead. Not sure if she is going to proceed though. Seems like a lot of work and the odds are slim.

Yes, my son did.

What is the Presidential Scholar letter that has been mentioned? @momofsmartdancer

@bmolloy97
http://www2.ed.gov/programs/psp/awards.html

Candidates are the top 30 boys and 30 girls from each state based on SAT and ACT scores (plus extra in some states due to ties) and some Arts and Technical scholars.

Thank you for the link @momofsmartdancer.

Are we in the clear yet if we haven’t received a letter?
