Does anyone know when letters for Merit Weekend are typically mailed? Our daughter received a Bluegrass Spirit Scholarship. I’m not sure if she will be invited or not. Does anyone know if recipients of that award are typically invited? She also qualifies for Legacy Tuition. Lastly, does anyone know the weekends slated for 2018 Merit weekend? We are out of state and will need to make travel arrangements, if invited. Would love to know either way, soon.
Does not look like UK has anything about 2018 Merit Weekend. But looking back at the thread for 2017 Merit Weekend
http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-kentucky/1961752-merit-weekend-2017-p1.html
it looks like some kids who had not yet received a formal Merit Weekend invitation were able to check their online account and switch to a Merit Weekend orientation (rather than a summer one). Also looks like people were getting invites in the US mail the first week or two in February.
You will want to go to merit weekend, the kids will get their schedules and ID’s. Ditto math and foreign language testing. The line for ID’s during K week are very long… They keep the parents very busy, I didn’t see any siblings. If you any particular questions you can ping me.
Pretty sure we took my son to Merit Weekend (he was home from college on spring break and wanted to see where his sister would be going to school). And I think there were some other siblings there but certainly not many. My wife and I were not fans of the parent activities. But the ones for the prospective students were good and my daughter really liked them. Everyone was incredibly nice throughout the process.
@Mmparks1 Not sure how he found this out, probably the UK portal or email, but DS texted me on Monday that invitations to merit weekend would be mailed out this week, and the weekends will be 3/9 - 3/10, 3/16 - 3/17, and 3/23 - 3/24.
This is my first rodeo so I have no idea what level of scholarship is required to be invited to merit weekend.
Thanks, LOUKYDAD! Sounds like we’ll know soon! I’m a UK alum but they did not have merit weekend when I attended. (Not that I could even get in now!).
Just checked my daughters admission section of her myUK and she was selected for merit weekend. She got the Bluegrass with meritorious considerations so maybe that’s why she was invited. Very thankful for this as it gives us time to get finances in order a lot earlier for the fall.
@pkf4bucs Has your daughter accepted her offer for admission to UK? I’m wondering if only those who have accepted show that information. My daughter hasn’t accepted yet. She’s waiting to hear her final scholarship offer.
@ILWildcat yes. She has accepted everything.
DS got an invite to Merit Weekend yesterday. He has not accepted yet. Waiting on honors acceptance at UK and a couple of competitive scholarships at U of L.
There is a $250 merit weekend payment payable when you register. Half is a $125 enrollment pre-payment, which is refunded if you decide to attend another school and request refund by 5/1. Other half ($125) is a merit weekend orientation fee, which is refunded if decide not to attend merit weekend and request refund by the Monday before the weekend you registered for.
Tack on $30 guest fee for each family member/guest that attends.
Fees cover registration fee, parking refreshments Friday evening and lunch on Saturday.
Just called and was told DD is invited and an email should have come last night. Nursing is not present for 1st weeked, so we will be attending the 17th. Now I need to figure out getting there and staying there. Has anyone heard how the dorm accommodations are for Merit Weekend?
@Mmparks1 overnight accommodations are not provided. This link was provided for list of area hotels:

DS invite came yesterday to his UK email account.
I was asking about the dorm accommodations that are $35/night, vs. hotel. The person I spoke to confirmed those were an option. I, personally, think a hotel may be the way to go but if most attendees stay in the dorm room accommodations, I would for dd benefit.
We stayed in a hotel last year. My dorm days are long since past me. I won’t stay in one even if its an option. My daughter stayed in the hotel with us and had no problem negotiating the merit weekend activities.
Picked my daughter up Friday for spring break. There were a lot of people there for merit weekend. Hopefully everything went well for families/students who went this weekend. In terms of dorms, the current students are still in them so I am not sure how it would work to have merit weekend kids staying in dorms. Over the summer would presumably work in terms of space.
DD attended Merit Weekend on March 9th-10th. Want to give students a “heads up” on the registration process.
UK has been her first choice from the moment she stepped on campus and she received an excellent OOS scholarship. She only submitted her highest ACT score because UK does not superscore for scholarships and has not submitted AP scores because she is taking three exams in May and the scores she already has didn’t impact what she was planning to take in the Fall. But when she went to register on Saturday morning, she had already been registered into two classes (chem and calc). It was not the Chemistry class level she wanted and she is taking Calc this summer. She was told she could not remove the classes from her class schedule until after her registration period ended and their contact hours precluded her from being able to register for the class schedule she had carefully prepared. It was a disaster and really stressful for her as she watched sections fill up. She finally contacted an advisor in the Lewis Honors College who was incredibly helpful and got her registered for the classes she wanted (minus the sections that were already closed!). In the large group meeting, the advising representative talked about how classes would be recommended. What she really meant was that your student could be already registered. Be prepared!!!
My daughter attends Merit Weekend next week and we saw where she was already scheduled for two classes. It was her Communications class and the UK 101 class. I am hoping those classes can be moved around as one of them will interfere with the band class that she will need to schedule at the same time.
