OK y’all are making me nervous. I never called NMSC with my first NM child but now I’ve gone ahead and called them, hoping for confirmation that all is set. They were VERY nice and I was not on hold long, but S18’s HS has not submitted yet. Sigh…I know the GC is going to do it, she has lots of NMF apps to send in every year, but I still want some confirmation.
@vistajay It says on he online application whether the GC has sent in the app yet.
What are people answering on the CSS Profile for the NMF question?
In what way?
There was a question on the form “are you a NMF”? (It was in the special questions area, so probably not everyone got it). The real answer is “probably, but we don’t know yet”. But only choices are YES, NO and DOES NOT APPLY
Thanks everyone for the reminder to check the NMSC portal. I checked this morning & her school hadn’t submitted ti yet & I just checked again this evening and it now shows that the application was transmitted as of today.
I guess I’ll call them in the next few days just to make sure they got the SAT confirming score & then everything from our end will be finished !!
@DiotimaDM, the school is notified first, but finalists also receive a letter sent to the home address. We received ours in CA on Feb. 17.
It’s hard to believe that the juniors are taking their PSAT today for their shot at national merit - our (Class of 2018) kids are the old veterans now!!
D was telling me that she helped to set-up the classroom for the big test today!!
Our school isn’t giving the PSAT for two more weeks.
My D’s GC finally submitted her package today. I called NMSC and they confirmed they had everything that was needed. They were very nice on what is probably a busy day for them.
Does anyone know if the deadline for schools to submit their portion of the app is later than the student deadline? The directions of the scholarship are leading me to believe the school has to submit by today too. Even though my portion of the app is done my guidance counselor still hasn’t submitted my materials… Anyone know what to do in this situation?
I am not sure when the deadline is for counselor , but even if the school official submits late, you won’t be penalized.
@insertcleverpun , I called NMSC yesterday and they assured me that nothing will be done to penalize the student for lateness on the part of the school. They said they realize it’s out of the student’s control and not to worry about it. Good luck.
Okay just for clarification… I submitted my part of the application on September 29… I notified my school official a couple weeks ago and the Principal that the deadline is today. YET, with all of my warnings and reminders, they still haven’t submitted anything (according to the application: “Your school official has not transmitted the completed application to NMSC.”) I am really worried right now. I have done my part, but my school officials have been negligent in this entire process (pretty sad considering I am one of the few/the first National Merit Semifinalist in my school’s history). Will my application be disqualified if my school officials don’t submit it by today (Oct. 11)?
@tt8082 , see my post above. I heard this from prior years’ families too. I understand your concern completely, but I would suggest you call NMSC tomorrow and explain the situation. I’m sure they can help explain that all will be fine since this is not your fault. With that said - very frustrating!
S got his first piece of mail directly referencing his NMSF status today. It’s from UNM and lays out the scholarship he’ll be offered if he advances.
@DiotimaDM My D got the admission mail a couple days ago and she accessed her account in UNM and knew she got in honors college. How much can we expect for scholarship in UMN? 10k? My S applied for UMN yesterday.
@3lovingmom Are we talking New Mexico or Minnesota?
University of New Mexico is a full ride of $18,868/year, plus the Amigo Scholarship (OOS tuition waiver), plus an iPad (awarded as an $800 gift certificate to the campus bookstore).
I’m not sure about Minnesota.
@DiotimaDM oh, I meant U of MN. I misread it. Thanks for the info though.
@DiotimaDM last year my NMSF daughter received the equivalent of a full tuition offer at UMN. She’s in-state but there were others with comparable stats from OOS who received enough additional scholarship money, including the $10,000 National, to cover the differential. It’s a pretty good deal, especially if you are accepted to Carlson, Bio, or Science & Engineering.
