***2018 National Merit Finalist Thread****

I called NMSC today just to make sure they got my D’s SAT confirming score. The call took less than a minute. The phone rep (very polite & helpful) asked for her name & birth date & then told me they had our info, the school’s info, and the confirming score & that there’s nothing else left for us to do.

I sent that SAT score to them on 9/25, but I got the feeling today that I’d better check to see if they actually got it just to be safe.

NMF marketing heating up?

Today, D got letters (with details about NMF scholarships) from UCF, ASU, Alabama, and UNM. ASU also still offers to reimburse a portion of the student’s flight expense for a personalized Student Experience Day visit.

Of course, all of the letters specify that the scholarship offer is contingent upon advancing to NMF.

Advancing to NMF only has about a 94% chance of success.

For anyone curious, ASU reemburses up to $200 of travel expenses.

Does anyone know if naming a college as the first-choice actually means anything? I don’t especially want to go to any of the schools offering my full scholarships for NMF, but obviously it would be a really nice backup school at the very least. Does naming another college such as an Ivy League as my first choice make a difference in the admissions process (as in admissions committee see that I want to go to their school the most), or should I just name one of the schools offering me a nice financial scholarship so I can have the chance of receiving the scholarship?

Name the top school you would attend that offers a NMF scholarship

@LMHS73, yep, tons of NMSF marketing here, including invitations to college-sponsored receptions for NMSF and parents at local hotels and restaurants. OU has one coming up (at our choice of a Mexican restaurant or a steak house) and Texas Tech did one earlier at a hotel. I think there was another as well, maybe TAMU? Of course they’re all centrally located in Houston and on school nights and would all be at least an hour drive each way, so even if S hadn’t already decided on his school we probably wouldn’t be able to go to any of these receptions. It’s a nice thing for the colleges to do though.

@traveler98 - you have it better than us so far. Our local State U hosted a lunch today with D and the other 22 NMSFs from her HS to talk about their NMF scholarship. She said they each got a tiny piece of a sub sandwich. My D is tiny & although she was grateful for the gesture, she said it’s the first time that she ever left a meal feeling hungry. ;))

@kcheves Not top in any rankings but those of my heart, UNevada Reno gives $16,000/year

@curiousscience , Also…you can leave it as Undecided right up until May if you want (or forever, I suppose). Many scholarships don’t require you to list their school until the end but check with your specific schools.

Just a little advice from a last year parent. NMSC tries to get as many scholarships out there as possible to qualifying kids. They will first award from your employer, if your employer sponsors NMSC students. Second, it will come from the school. Last, from NMSC itself. There are instances where the school offering is technically higher than a corporate. Most schools will still give the equivalent school scholarship even if your student ends up with a non-NMSC corporate schoarship as their ‘official’ scholarship. Make sure you contact the school, though, just to be sure. Also, follow the dates. March 1 is about the time they look for non-NMSC corporate scholarships. May 1 for school sponsored.

To any NMSF who applied to UMD College Park: They offer an application fee waiver for NMSF but we did not receive one.

D was ready to hit submit on her application just now (a tedious process) and I would prefer not pay $75 if I don’t have to.

It said something about emailing Admissions at UMD, which I did, but idk how timely a response may come. Did anyone else receive this fee waiver? Thanks.

Thanks for the heads up. submitted her app two days ago. Did not know about the fee waiver for MD. Darn!!!

Still perplexed about why DD is not receiving NMSF marketing. One thing from UTD-just inviting her to Scholars Day but not adding any sugar to it. She had a 224, SAT 800M/760E, straight As, school pres, etc. I guess I need to call NMSC to confirm they have her in their system correctly. We are MD residents. Would have been nice to have received SOME notice about free app waiver there. I love CC but some info should come to us directly, shouldnt it?

I hear you, @dowzerw . We have received some marketing but idk if we have received all that I’ve seen mentioned. You should definitely give them a call - can’t hurt.

@DiotimaDM RE: #255. Nothing has come referencing NMSF or any special honors opportunities, other than the UTD postcard and it did not even mention NMSF, just the invite to scholars day.

@JBStillFlying #262 94% is pretty high, isn’t it? I thought it was around 50%?

@dowzerw, no, there are about 16k NMSF and about 15k become NMF. The 50% you’re thinking of may refer to the number of NMF who become NM scholars (4k via college-sponsored, 2.5k NMSC-sponsored, 1.5k corporation-sponsored)

@traveler98 You are right. There is still uncertainty ahead. Thanks.
