@traveler98 RE: post # 266: Still can’t figure out why my kid isn’t receiving invites for cool events and scholarship opportunities due to NMSF qualifying? That’s rhetorical. I know you can’t answer. I’ll have to pick up the phone Monday
D got a letter from New Mexico State yesterday offering “Full financial support” to NMFs & admission to their Conroy Honors College. I am not familiar with the school at all, but just wanted to alert folks to a new full ride option.
Curious if anyone else has an NMSF kid with a combination of smart & scatterbrained, with some anxiety/perfectionism thrown in for good measure? I have many anecdotes I could share, but curious if this is a common thing.
It’s probably common - my firstborn was like that (and missed NMSF by a point in a high-cutoff state). By contrast, my current senior has amazing executive function!
@GertudeMcFuzz Wow that describes me perfectly(the student)
@GertrudeMcFuzz , I may or may not know a student like that.
@Kayak24 haha–me too! @GertrudeMcFuzz
Same here, @GertrudeMcFuzz.
Thanks all - that’s a bit of a relief. This came up as she failed her driving exam for the 3rd time yesterday, then this morning proceeded to lose her bus pass & forget a critical item which I had to drop off to her. (I am intimately familiar with the “drop-off drawer” at her school.)
Not to mention all the daily tasks we ask her to do (daily) which she cannot seem to remember and the number of phones she has lost/dropped/broken. I wouldn’t change her for the world though - she is wonderfully funny, kind and interesting. I would love to give her a little dose of self-confidence though & maybe take a bit of the weight of the world off her shoulders.
Hmm, my D is currently missing two pairs of glasses and three sets of keys. Never seems to lose the phone, though! I had to buy a microwave ramen cooker because using a stove is beyond her abilities (she boils the pot dry, because she forgets she’s hungry?!).
@GertrudeMcFuzz - sounds pretty common from reading the comments. That’s my S15 as well !! Blessed with intellect but the common sense part is non-existent.
Benaquisto in Florida for all NMS? 2018. It looks like the Benaquisto is going to be voted on in Florida in February 2018. It is supposed to pass this time. It would give the Full Cost Of Attendance to all NMF residing outside of the State of Florida for Fall 2018 to the top 6 schools. Is this a game changer?
eligible student who meets the requirements of 763 paragraph (4)(a), who is a National Merit Scholar or National 764 Achievement Scholar, and who attends a Florida public 765 postsecondary educational institution shall receive a 766 scholarship award equal to the institutional cost of attendance 767 minus the sum of the student’s Florida Bright Futures 768 Scholarship and National Merit Scholarship or National 769 Achievement Scholarship. 770
- An eligible student who meets the requirements under 771 paragraph (4)(b), who is a National Merit Scholar, and who 772 attends a Florida public postsecondary educational institution 773 shall receive a scholarship award equal to the institutional 774 cost of attendance for a resident of this state minus the 775 student’s National Merit Scholarship. Such student is exempt 776 from the payment of out-of-state fees. 777
(b) An eligible student who is a National Merit Scholar or 778 National Achievement Scholar and who attends a Florida 779 independent postsecondary educational institution shall receive 780 a scholarship award equal to the highest cost of attendance for 781 a resident of this state enrolled at a Florida public 782 university, as reported by the Board of Governors of the State
It would appear that all NMF would get a FULL Ride in Florida at these schools if this goes through in February after listing one of these schools as your top choice.
University of Florida
Florida State University
University of Miami
University of Central Florida
University of South Florida
New College of Florida
From your post above the scholarship is not full ride for private universities like U of Miami. The student would be responsible for the difference in COA between Miami and a state school.
Likely too late for many in the class of 2022 including my D, but a great deal for future NMF’s.
I read where other Benaquisto scholars (2016) used the COA amount for FSU at UM and then used UM Merit scholarships or Aid scholarships for the difference.
Earliest I could find Gov. Scott signing a Bill into Law was May 9th 2017. If he signs it into law in early May 2018 it would work for some. (effective immediately)
@FSUdad93 See this discussion for some historical context on the issue:
D already has UCF and UM on her list, so I guess we’ll see what happens. I would be nervous though, to rely on this for all 4 years given the back & forth we’ve already seen.
