***2018 National Merit Finalist Thread****

@sewin2music, so glad you had a great time at UCF! Our UTD tour was similar in structure to that described by @3scoutsmom. In addition we met with a rep for the McDermott scholarship program, . We visited the Tuesday before Thanksgiving when there were few students on campus, and didn’t get to meet any NM students. Our student tour guide was very nice though, and gave a good impression of UTD. UTD also treated us to lunch in the dining hall, which was excellent. If my son doesn’t have any conflicts and wants to attend NM Scholars Preview we will go, but we are only a three hour drive from campus. If we lived far like you, I’m not sure there would be a big benefit to doing both a personalized tour and NM Scholars Preview.

Thanks for your detailed visit report, and I’m happy that you know you have at least one NMF school that you will enjoy attending!

My son and daughter were at the UCF evening also and couldn’t say enough about how much they liked it. It is currently #1 on their list!

Florida SB #4 still crawling along. For those of you not following it would give the Benaquisto to all NMF nationwide.

@3scoutsmom @traveler98 Thank you! Sounds like your guys’ trips were quite extensive! I think we are going to try to head out in January for the individual tour.

@FSUdad93 Cool, maybe I’ll meet them next year!

Hi all – I’m about to take my D for a 2nd visit of Ole Miss and their honors college. I have some questions for them about their NMF scholarship. Can you guys think of other things that I should be asking? I would love to hear anything that you all can think of that I haven’t! Below are some of the things I am going to ask.

  1. Does the scholarship include summer school or winter sessions?
  2. Does it include additional semesters, after 4 years?
  3. Since the scholarship includes on-campus housing, will the student get a housing stipend to use for living off campus after their freshman year?
  4. Can the tuition part of the scholarship be used for study abroad?

@crazy4info - a couple of questions the come to mind:

  1. If D come in with AP credits, will the school still guarantee her 4 years on the scholarship if she wants to still do all 4 years?
  2. Does the college stack outside scholarships?
  3. Is there a minimum GPA requirement to keep the scholarship?

@crazy4info Does the school give priority registration for NM kids? (this was aHUGE perk for my DD)

Just returned from touring UCF on Friday. What an amazing school with a great package for NMF. It is definitely number 1 on my daughters list. The housing in the Towers is amazing, with a full kitchen and very nice rooms. The full bed rather than twins is a nice touch. We had lunch with 3 NMS students and they were very helpful in letting us know the pros and cons of the university. We had an hour long conference with the dean of the nursing department and an extended conference with the dean of the honors college. Luke Van Blaricon went over the scholarship package which is very generous. We went on a golf cart tour of the campus as well and it was gorgeous ! The campus is located in a nice part of town and hotels are close by. Very impressed with our visit !

My son felt the same way. UCF is number 1 on his list. Although he may decide to room with the general population at the Towers for a more diverse experience. ;))

For those of you NMF watching SB 4 in Florida: (12/6/2017 Senate • CS by- Appropriations; YEAS 19 NAYS 0 )
It is still moving right along. (Benaquisto to all NMF)

@FSUdad93 thank you- great news!

Florida is becoming very welcoming for NMF! Lots of students seem to like UCF and now the Benaquisto option will make more Florida schools very attractive for NMF. I couldn’t get S interested in Florida at all (he would only consider OOS schools with cooler weather than our Houston suburb) but I would have liked to at least tour UCF with him. Anyway thanks for the update @FSUdad93.

Go SB 4! S18 applied to FSU and Miami so OOS Benacquisto could come into play for him.

New letter in today’s mail from Vanderbilt Dean of Admissions and FA directly addressing NMF and seemingly trying to recruit them. They list their “at least $5k scholarship for NMF” and also list stats on how each year more than 10% of their entering freshmen are NMF. They go on to say that “226 students in Vanderbilt’s 2017 entering class were NMF.”

Anyone think this suggests that NMF could get a slight bump (obviously no guarantee!) on admissions? Obviously they pay attention to their numbers and I’ve read that Vanderbilt admissions are stat-heavy. Thoughts?

Vandy is a little too far away for D but she did apply and is open to visiting if applicable.

Well @Kayak24 I hope you are right about the bump at Vandy! S18 applied and he would love to go there.

If it gets signed into law in the spring, it would become effective immediately! I would recommend interested parties be already accepted to schools of possible choices. A FULL RIDE to FSU/UF and a mostly Full to Miami warrants a look.

My concern with Vandy is that they had scholarship apps due 12/1. Did my kid miss the boat? A UF full ride is a great option though!

@Kayak24 DD received love letter from Vandy today, too. FWIW

@jprtaco Vandy extended the scholarship deadline, so check into that.

Does anyone know if being a Mississippi resident on your top tier applications is a URM or a hook of some type? The Ivies I have checked out seem to have 1-3 total students from this state.
