***2018 National Merit Finalist Thread****

Us neither here in Arlington, Tx. Nothing from principal or GC. I work at the school and even saw the principal yesterday. Crickets.

Received notification in the mail today… I’m a finalist! From Vegas

My DS is a finalist in Texas. We are elated.

But I’m sad to read that one of the victims in FL was named NMSF in September…

NMF in northern Virginia!

NMF letter came in today’s mail! Super excited!

My S and D both received NMF letters today in KS! Yay!

We didn’t apply any of the schools which offers full ride? Is it too late?

No, it’s not. UNM and Texas Tech have rolling admissions. I think you can still apply to UT Dallas as well. With others, you’ll have to check individually. I think Bama has a deadline but if UAH or UAB have a later deadlines, you can apply there get the scholarship and then ask Bama to match it.

@Laketahoe79 UCF has rolling admissions and NMF are guaranteed admission to the university and Honors college upon application. Honors is a separate application and is due by March 31st, the sooner the better even though it is guatenreed. It’s a full ride cost-of-attendence scholarship.

I don’t know if this would be any use/help to anybody, but in case:

I’ve settled on four major dimensions with the following weights: (These are the main issues in my decision making process.)
Cost 25
Premed 35
Backup options 25
Happiness 15

Premed: How much the school prepares for med school; how easy/likely to go to med school etc.
Backup options: In case of a major change, how good my options are
Happiness: How happy I would be living there for 4 years

Each dimension except COA has multiple sub-parameters:

PREMED:
GPA
Weedout ratio
MD success rate
Research
Premed advising

Shadowing

Med-school quality
Volunteering

HC student level

BACKUP:
Prestige
Backup majors

HC quality
Student level

HAPPINESS:
Cultural fit
Dorm
Location

Weather

Food

Sub-parameters were explained in my prior posts. Relative weight of the sub-parameters are important only within its group.

With my weights, UCF is #1.

I guess we are not able to post excel sheets here. OW, I would have posted it.

Received my NMF letter yesterday afternoon!!

@Laketahoe79 Arizona State will still take admissions. Barrett Honors College offers almost full tuition ($26k out of $27k). So, only need room and board.

@Maof2tx - and any others that did not receive notification from your school, I recommend following-up. The Certificate that the school gets is nice. Better than the letter for those who are collecting memorabilia for their DS/DD’s museum.

@Laketahoe79 Best resource at UCF is their NM coordinator Luke Van Blaricom !

I have heard of NMFs getting letters and even phone calls waiving deadlines and asking them to apply.

Also, I know this might seem awkward, but I have also heard of NMFs phoning colleges to say, “I know I missed the deadline, but I am NMF and very interested in your school” and getting to apply late. All they can do is say no, right? I wouldn’t try this with a really elite school, however.

Agree with prodesse. I checked UK’s (Kentucky) website and their RD app deadline was yesterday, but I am betting they will still accept. All but certain it is too late for honors college, which had a December 1 app deadline and decision day is today by email.

UK Patterson scholarship for NMF is 4 year full tuition plus a $10k stipend for years 1 and 2 only.

Does anybody know exactly how much UCF provides per year? I heard different figures. $37K, $36K or $33K?
Is this fixed for all years even when the tuition goes up? 2017-2018 OOS Tuition & Fees $22,466.

Google Benacquisto scholarship. It explains the Florida NMF program. Total COA to the state universities…includes UCF, UF, New College of FL, U Miami, FSU and U of S Fl. I believe they included out of state NMF this year, but not 100% sure.

Yes. Total COA, living, tuition, books etc. covers the whole thing even if tuition goes up. It’s not a fixed amount, but a complete coverage of costs.

Thanks @MG2018. I believe the UCF NMF package is not Benacquisto for OOS’s. I thought UCF is a fixed amount for OOS.

Anybody has any update on SB04? If I am not mistaken, @FSUdad93 said that Florida Senate has to pass it by March 9. If it does not happen by then, it will be too late for us. Is my understanding correct?
