***2018 National Merit Finalist Thread****

My NMF son is a “Physics” and “Astronomy & Astrophysics” major at Ohio State. He loves it. I don’t think he feels like his majors have"weed out" classes, but his current math class - linear algebra - is very difficult. He has gotten some great opportunities outside the classroom: as a freshman, he is already doing research with a prof and grad student (and got a grant to stay in Columbus and continue with his research this summer) and he is on OSU’s Micro-g NExt team (a NASA program) and is going to the Johnson Space Center on OSU’s dime in May to present their design and work with NASA staff!

It sounds like maybe your D is a Junior? If Ohio State is on her list, she should apply for the Eminence scholarship - not NMF-related (NB, it has an early application deadline). It’s full cost of attendance, and has many other benefits like dedicated advisors, social events and a community service component, where each class comes up with and implements a charity in Columbus over their four years. All the Eminence Fellows are part of the Honors College and take honors classes. They also all live in the same dorm freshman year. My son has thrived in this program.

Best of luck to you and your D and congrats on NM!

Thanks for the physics info!!
