My son, who is a CS (Games) major just got his first job offer as a Gameplay programmer for a small (lol) tech company in Redmond, WA. You may recall he was accepted as an Undeclared Spring admit who transferred into Viterbi his Sophomore year. I cannot tell you how proud I am of him for how hard he has worked and what a great team player he is. I am also relieved that he will be able to pay back his student loans.
If your child is graduating next year, have they received offers yet? Choosing grad school instead? Btw my oldest child graduated in 2016 and is still living at home and trying to figure out what path to take. Everyone goes at their own speed.
I can play proud Papa - Kid is only a soph ME at Viterbi but has multiple “Big” company intern offers for summer. Also works very hard and keeps a 3.7 but was still surprised by number of options. I was pretty skeptical about the Trojan hype but it has been a very good experience and mostly lived up the adverts for my kid so far.
Congrats GamerGal27! It has been fun to follow your son’s progress (I remember that first year in Paris and the major change as well!) What a time it has been, eh?! But the feeling of satisfaction - not just for the student, but for the parent - when your student gets that first real job and such a good one, it is something else - time for a deep breath and big smile!
If you need arrangements for graduation, make then now if you haven’t already!!
My 2017 son and his 8 bff’s - from CS or another flavor of engineering - all had fantastic internships between junior and senior year, and are now working at firms in Palo Alto, SF, Seattle and NYC. All of them. (Mind you they are high achievers to begin with, but that is who USC attracts now.) Most had their FT jobs locked in during fall of senior year, a couple wanted to go somewhere else and waited till the spring to lock in, but the issue was choosing, not finding. Even with a major and 2 minors, by taking advantage of the USC Academic Achievement program many semesters and/or a summer school class, they didn’t have that many credits required during senior semesters. So a couple even stayed working (and already earning) with their internship firm by working online at USC during senior year while going to classes because they had room in their senior schedule.
Being a USC grad and the whole connection thing seems to good to be true until you see it in action - it is something else and just keeps on working for you. Years ago, I came in a skeptic, but it has proven itself over and over for us.
