***2019-20 Medical School Applicants and Their Parents***

@srk2017 I know… but lots of kids have 4-5 acceptances too. I just don’t get it.

@moonpie - does the schools your D interviewed have rolling admissions?

@moonpie all it takes is one out of those 4…

@srk2017 the 2 she’s interviewed at do have rolling admissions, but 1 she just interviewed at a couple weeks ago. She supposed to hear back “within 4 weeks”. The other one is where she did her SMP, which she was told she was 1 of 2 students who got a 4.0 and “knocked the program out of the park” and “she was the perfect candidate for medical school”, so that’s why I’m so frustrated for her! And she raised her MCAT by 7 POINTS! There is some speculation that the SMP students are being processed with the in-state kids, because only OOS have been admitted so far, and not that many from what I can glean. Maybe the SMP students are getting a better chance by being processed with the in-state kids? I don’t know. I’m just SO READY for some good news, and some stress to be taken off my girl so she can start making plans for the next year! Sorry to vent, but we really don’t even talk about it right now, and y’all are all I got!

@moonpie - Early round of offers are like UG ED i.e. they want to lock up their top choices and make them skip interviews from other schools (most do given the costs). May be you D’s SMP program knows it’s your D’s top choice and she will take it even if they offered late. Anchor Down and don’t let the process get you :slight_smile:

I feel like I’m the only posting here… but because I know several peeps have been following our story for 5 years. My middle girl IS GOING TO BE A DOCTOR!!! SHE GOT HER FIRST ACCEPTANCE TODAY. Haven’t really stopped crying yet. So very happy for her! And big sis is actually coming home tonight because she’s traveling to her last residency and flying out of our home city. We will be popping champagne tonight!!!

Congratulations @moonpie

One is all she needs! Enjoy the champagne and most of all, relax.

@moonpie Congratulations!

So very happy for your daughter!

Enjoy the champagne. You both deserve it.

Congratulations @moonpie! Happy for your family!

Congratulations @moonpie. I have been following this thread to mainly see how your D is doing.

Anchor Down :smile:

Thanks @texaspg @srk2017 @WayOutWestMom and @CottonTales !!! It was a great night of celebration!!! We all feel like we can truly celebrate big sis’s great interview season and middle sis’s acceptance together now! We had a wonderful dinner (cooked by the newly accepted girl because she loves to cook) and then shared a few bottles of champagne, called all the grandparents, and the watched Queer Eye Japan and Great British Bakeoff, LOL… her choice of “happy TV”.

D just attended her last scheduled interview. She has many schools that have not said anything, all in AMCAS but every school she applied in Texas TMDSAS gave her an interview and she had to skip one. She has to rank them by next Friday and probably accept one of her two admissions and give up the rest from consideration altogether since Texas forces people to hold only one admission after 17th and allow them to rank a school higher if they were not admitted there but would still like to be considered.

CONGRATS!! CONGRATS!! ^^^^^^^

congrats @texaspg!

Good Luck to everyone applying!

I think everyone already done applying for the current cycle ?

Yes, most schools have closed their admission cycles already. Very few schools are still interviewing for MD programs.

when is the earliest one can apply for admission and when is the last date ( month) that one can apply for a given cycle?

@rockyboston
Here’s an AMCAS timeline starting 4 years before application.
https://students-residents.aamc.org/applying-medical-school/article/timeline-application-and-admission-medical-school/

AMCAS opens for applications on and around June 1 every year. That’s the earliest one can apply. Verified primary applications start being transmitted to schools at the end of June. After the first data dump, AMCAS forwards verified applications to schools on a weekly basis.

(In between submitting an application and that application being sent to med schools is a process called verification. This process can take as little as a few hours or as much as 3 weeks, depending on one’s place in the verification queue.)

Each medical school has its own “apply by” date. Some close applications early as Oct 15; others close applications as late as in mid-January. But realistically, applicants need to have their primary in & transmitted to schools no later than Labor Day. Secondaries and all other required materials complete by Oct 1–though earlier is better.

Many med schools use rolling admissions. Interview invitations start being tendered as early as mid-August. Waiting until October to apply for MD programs is counter-productive. By mid-October about 75-85% of interview offers have already been tendered.

Med schools start offering acceptances on Oct. 15. (Standardized date set by AMCAS.)

Last date of application is quite a meaningless date for medical applications. Most schools never review applications that come later in the cycle and you will hear a lot of opinions on this but my gutfeeling is that if one does not file all their applications by end of June to mid july, they have given up their shot in the cycle for schools where they have not filed their apps by then. I read the other website college forums rather diligently and noticed that most people getting interviews have actually finished filing their apps in mid june.

Medical schools admissions are not given without an interview. Interviews or invitations at most schools begin by mid july. So if they dont have your application before they start the invites, that means you are already missing out. As time progresses, your shot starts diminishing and you are competing for fewer and fewer positions that are remaining. So if there are 700 slots available at the beginning of the season, by July 15th, they have gone down to 500, 300 by end of August, 200 by end of September etc. If you are competing for 200 slots at the end of September and you just submitted your application behind 9500 others still being reviewed ahead of you, you are now at 5% or less at being interviewed.
